You may not realize it but what you have inadvertently discovered is how much better the windows task bar is than the osx dock. In windows you don't switch apps by a combination of multi finger keystrokes or moving the mouse to the corner, waiting for the screen to redraw a representation of all the apps and then picking the right one. No, all you do is move the mouse to the task bar and click once. That's it. Simple and effective.
No kidding. For example at one point roll out this gem: "Windows Vista scored worse than Windows XP. Where Mac OS X scored 0.08, Windows XP scored 0.40 and Vista/Aero 0.52"
What are the units? 0.08 vs 0.40 in what? How is it measured, what factors are taken into account? What does it even fricking mean?!?
Thanks for the well thought out comments. I would just like to respond that the article in question was about Vista. All of you windows points seem to be about XP. It isn't clear to me that you have used Vista much if at all. The 'sidebar' (I assume you mean navigation pane. Sidebar means something else in Vista) is static in Vista. I did move around in XP depending on context.
I had no idea the issue was so slanted towards assent back then. Since this is the internet and all can you point to a source? No offence, 99% is just a bit shocking for such a bad bit of legislation.
*sigh* Trying to replicate trek tech is a complete waste of human resources until we find/manufacture dilithium crystals. Why the heck is NASA wasting my tax money on shuttle replacement parts?!? It's all about dilithium!
That's where I stopped reading. If you are going to lie at least come up with credible lies. At no point does Vista UAC pop up while changing your background. Even in early beta it did not do what you describe.
I'm not sure how much less secure we are because of this "exploit" but the fact that the potential for it has been around for years and we are just now talking about it must mean that Vista's voice recognition is much improved, and that IS a good thing.
Keep in mind, this is the quote you picked out from the gp: "I can sit down and USE my computer, not fuss with config files or spend hours compiling source code." to which you said: "Most of your arguments make no sense"
I'll come back to that in a sec...
"Kids - really games & music. IIRC there was an article here a few weeks ago about the crosstalk software being able to successfully run WOW." Who knows exactly what the kids want to run. They may change what they want every other day. If you invest enough time you can maybe get WOW to run if you read this article? I think you missed his very valid point.
"Photos - [...] I suppose it might take me a few hours to write a program to scan through that directory one at a time, show you the picture & ask where you want to put it[...]"
How much is a few hours of your time worth? More or less then the cost of an OS that just does this out of the box?
"Your time - [...] and I don't have to worry about MS dumping it's DRM onto my system as a critical security update."
What if I want to watch an HD movie or listen to protected music? On OSX or Windows I have that choice. I can either use the DRM or continue to listen to my music in ogg, mp3 or whatever other format. It isn't that OSX or Windows is locking me into a choice so much as Linux is locking me out of choices.
My child is the most selfish being I've ever met. Ever since he was an infant he's clearly acted as if the world revolves around him. All hours of the night he would make noise and wake the whole house without even having a clear need. For all I could tell he just found that he was awake and wanted us to be awake too. He's three now and while he's gained the ability to communicate his desires they still mostly revolve around him. Sure, he'll occasionally give us a smile or hug but you can be it's because he wants something in return, be it a cookie or some affection. Take right now for example. He's persistently patting my back and repeating "Daddy? Do you hear me? Daddy? Do you hear me?" in a selfish attempt to gain my attention, completely disregarding that fact that I'm trying to post a comment.
I'm told that someday he'll gain a sense that the world contains more than just his ego but to be honest I'm not holding much hope.
"If it weren't for Microsoft handing over our rights to the them on a silver platter, it would be the RIAA and MPAA bending over to the people instead!"
What do you think would have happened to MS stock if they tried that? Do you really think Apple would have passed up on a opportunity to be to only OS that supports HD? Do you think the RIAA and MPAA would have brought fresh law suits that MS was abusing their monopoly? Who is any publicly traded company supposed to be more loyal to, the share holders or "the people". I think you are being more than just a tad naive.
Companies do not represent "the people". If this is something you want "the people" to do something about you should call your representative and ask them to write/sponsor legislation.
Teaching what the other side is saying doesn't mean they will both be balanced. There is a large amount of evidence that global warming is going on and that we are contributing to it. Analyzing what the other side is saying and digging in to who is paying them to say it seems like it would be an educational way to show both sides. I'm sure people will cry that we need to look into who is paying the environmentalists but last I checked the polar bear lobby was small and shrinking fast. It would still satisfy the ruling and I think be good for the students.
So is the OEM supposed to secure these systems for the user prior to sale? How do the OEMs make sure the crappy code they load on isn't ever run with elevated rights?
1) If you step away for coffee long enough for them to be able to make changes what's to keep them from just walking off with your system?
2) The Vista behavior is just the default. I can change it to always ask for a password if I want. Can you change your default or does your OS vendor not trust you to do what you think is best?
Approval is only if you already have admin rights. Why make people retype their passwords? If you are logged in as standard user it asks for Authentication. This is just the default btw. It can be set to always ask for authentication or turned off. I've read other people on this thread say it should not be able to be turned off. It's my computer and I like to be able to customize it as I see fit. I own it, it does not own me.
Why discount NT just because it didn't replace 95? One company putting out two OS tracks to serve a wider market is just as impressive. It would be like saying Dodge doesn't get credit for the Viper because it already makes trucks.
Even though Win NT and win 9x were on different tracks windows 98 was a significant feature improvement over win95. ME just shouldn't have happened though as it was really a step back from win98 or a win98se take two at best. Win2k was to WinNT what Win98 was to Win95. Huge feature improvments. XP was just as large a step as it brought the two branches together and moved the "consumers" over to the NT base.
Yeah, I have no idea how they got 0.08 on the mac.
I tried it on my iMac with the old (but still very hip) round mouse. Best I could get was 1.72.
"Has everyone forgotten?"
Nope not me.
I'm still waiting for 10.5. That version should be the Real good one.

Bummer. Good thing they added a new shadow copy feature. All you have to do is right click and select Restore Previous Version.
You're welcome.

"I guess all those graphics professionals who need to upgrade will have to either find a machine that still comes with XP or get a Mac."
Speaking of Macs, has Adobe shipped a native build of PS yet?
"...Stuff like changing my desktop background..."

"Except for the hour and half at startup where Windows loads every application you've ever loved into memory, right?"
Startup? Returning from hibernation is much faster than doing a clean startup. Only do that if you need to reboot after patch tuesday.

I'll bite.
So why hasn't Red Hat and IBM added exchange compatibility to Open Office?
"What on Earth does this mean?"
I'm going to guess you are not a parent.

"P.S. I believe the Bible is right as long as it is translated Correctly."
Isn't that the same as saying "the bible is right as long as it's translated the way I translate it".
How can your take on it be the definitive one?
So is the OEM supposed to secure these systems for the user prior to sale? How do the OEMs make sure the crappy code they load on isn't ever run with elevated rights?
"It's actually not a half bad sounding little gadget, either."
And the i moniker makes more sense for this Internet Phone.
What's the i in iPod stand for again?
We are now letting Canadians use our telescope and take credit for the things they happen to see through it? What is the world coming to?!?

All that pain and you only have one mouse button.
Good move.
