Granted, you don't need a degree but to find the original exploit takes quite a bit of knowledge of system internals, probably quite a bit of time with a kernel debugger like SoftIce and a fair amount of persistence.
The calculus isn't needed though. Those are just gateway classes to see how serious you are.
You've been misinformed, I've upgraded my home system four times. The fourth time required a call and I explained that I upgrade my system about every 6-9 months and the tech gave me a new key. And for me there was no hold time any of the three calls (four including my home system). A tech picked up right away.
This has happened to me three times. I do a lot of reinstalls on test systems at work. Each time I just called the phone number they provide and explained the situation and was provided an authentication key. Took 5 min tops. As long as you are legit it isn't a problem. If you aren't legit, go cry me a river.
Upon re-reading my post I agree that it came across a bit more prickish than I intended.
It was the part about only watching TV for the foreign coverage that set me off. Though if I give it more than a knee-jerk amount of thought I agree that the local coverage of Iraq stinks.
"...and then Kevin Rose with his elitist attitude..."
And
"That is impressive simply because I don't watch TV. Last year I didn't watch television at all for six months, after that I only watched it to see international perspective of the War in Iraq."
I love it when people claim to not watch TV save for some annoyingly elitist reason.
It's also interesting to think of what hard drives have done in the same period. The Windows folder on my system is about 1/20 the size of my SouthPark episodes folder.
My Win95 box had 350MB HD Win98 : 2GB Win2K : 8GB WinXP : 120GB SouthPark folder : almost 30GB
You don't understand something. When most people upgrade their OS, they do so by purchasing a new system. So this is what they predict the new systems will look like in two years.
That's why I don't support via my pocket book any form of music DRM and why there will always be cracks. Laws that are unjust should not be followed. If I buy music, I am going to listen to it how I want. Unreasonable licenses will be ignored.
"...give the player away, denying Real and Apple a chance to make a little money."
I use iTunes all the time. It was a free download. And fuck the spyware bloated, hard-to-find-free-version of Real. When the company tanks it will be because of their marketing practices. They had a wide open lead and they wasted it by fucking over their own users. At least when Microsoft does it they give the user something in return to distract them from the fucking part.
So if my physical media on which my licensed music sits wears out can I get a replacement for the cost of the media? I still own the license and if I can't back it up (fair use) they should provide me with a replacement when it wears out. I shouldn't have to buy another license. Can't have it both ways.
"Um, are the tops of mountains in Turkey littered with large boats?"
Doesn't matter. The only thing we know for sure is that if there is a boat up there it DID NOT contain 2 of every last animal on earth. Why? Because it would take many thousands of years for the world to repopulate with the animals that are here. Follow me a bit here... During this time there would not have been any animals dieing over large portions of the planet because there were no animals born there yet.
So there would have been no skeletal remains left behind, causing a large gap in the fossil record. This is not the case. It's fossils all the way down! So the whole Noah thing was most likely just a local flood myth that grew out of proportion and over time has been morphed into some inane patriarchal parable.
Not true for me:( Going through my father's basement I came across my old Franklin Ace 1000. I took it home hoping to relive a cherished part of my childhood with some of the classic games. (Choplifter, Zork, Spy Hunter etc) Sadly, none of the disks would load.
I just randomize my whole collection and hit play. When I need to stop I hit pause. Later I pick up from where I left off. I only need the one play list because it has everything and this way my music stays fresh and I don't get tired of songs from over use. A month or more may go by before I hear the same song again. What I always hated about CDs is that after a while I would start playing the next track in my head as the current one was ending and it caused the music to get stale. Having a 13GB random playlist keeps this from happening.
"So he's going to monopolize the on-system firewall and anti-virus industry next. Big deal. (The firewall should be on a separate system, anyhow...)"
Wake up and smell it.:)
I agree that ideally there should be a separate system/router for the firewall but this is not realistic and it is better to have the system secure by default. Right? It's not like it hurts to have both and it isn't like including IE either. There is still plenty of room for companies to innovate and compete here, especially in the corporate market.

History shows that war on any common noun does not go well. Where are we with the war on drugs? How's that war on poverty going?
For a war to really get traction and be effect it needs to be against a Person or Place, not just a Thing.

Yep. Apple is in a tough spot.
They climbed into bed with the devil and just learned that he likes it rough.
Damn dude. If you put that much work into a post, don't go all AC on us.
Wish I had a mod point.
You don't really need the appendix and you can get by with only one kidney.

"Not everyone is a gamer who has to buy a new system every month or two."
So don't buy the new OS. If win95 still runs your solitaire and you are happy with it, keep on trukin!
Don't many (most?) alternative browsers pretend to be MSIE for compatibility reasons? This would skew Google's data a bit.
Yep. That was a painful read. The whole damn book is just one big straw man argument for why corporate greed is really a good thing.
Did we see a /. story two days ago about how Tivo had so much mind share that it has become a verb but were not winning in their market?
