This may be a silly question, but didn't you bother to call his references and check to see if he was actually doing the kinbd of work that he said he was? I have hired many people over the years. The best ones have always been the ones who broght samples of code or had links to their personal web sites where they showed or had downloads of applications written in the language that I wanted them to work in. Short of that a call to a former boss that could vouch for the proramming that the applicant had done.

Don't blame the guy you hired for your lack of investigation before hiring him.

The problem with this argument is that these same salespeople/road warriors are going to sign up for the $40 per month unlimited use account, and then you really have no recourse against them when they sit doen and hog the table for hours. If you provide truly free internet access, put up a sign that says "Wifi is for paying customers only. Limit 60 minutes with food/beverage purchase." You may not get rid of all of the freeloaders, but most would pay attention to something like that.

That doesn't matter. Given the lawsuit settlement between Apple Computer and Apple Corps back in the 1980s, which says that Apple Computer cannot use Apple in the music industry, Apple Corps should be able to own Apple Computer any time they want to. That would end the problem quickly!

It's not even one album. It is the Macca/U2 version from Live8. Put the entire Beatles catalog up and watch the sales soar! Why not put up Led Zeppelin while you are at it? Those are the two biggest missing bands from legal downloads in the Classic Rock genre.

  9. Re:What was interesting on Supreme Court Rules against Grokster · · Score: 1

While the question of whether a P2P product that is advertised as legal is still open this does answer a very basic question.

The question answered is "Can a device that is inherently advertised to do something illegal be redeemed by a legal use?" This i svery similar to the way that the cable descrambler cases went in the old days.

I do not know why you would have expected any ruling other than this one. Yes there will/may be another cases to decide if the question of a legally created and advertised product that is used for illegal means can lead to liability, but that case is far different and far harder to prove, as it is akin to saying that a car can be used as a getaway car or as an accessory to DWI, so why not ban it?

What was found by the court today just eliminated stupidity. Now there will be no more advertising of illegal ends using a given piece of software as the means.

Pirates and crackers will always find a way to use legitimate things for less than legitimate purposes. That is a far cry from what we have here however.

  10. Re:Your influence is the number one thing on How To Balance Life And Technology For Kids? · · Score: 1

Your friend does not realize what a disadvantage he has put his child at. (OK, bad sentense structure.) These days kids are expected to be fluent on computers by first grade and by third grade, their presentations, such as book reports, are expected to be multimedia presentations done in PowerPoint.

I have 2 kids, aged 9 and (almost) 13. Each one is extremely proficient in both Windows and Linux and play with their PS2 and their GBAs. They are also both into fencing and baseball/softball and the younger plays drums while the older plays flute and guitar.

You must strike a balance. Making your kids a techo-idiot will only harm him/her in the long run. But also insist on them being well-rounded, including at least one sport and one musical instrument.

Doing this will help them throughout life, however remember that each activity they participate in means a ride there and a ride back. Be prepared to support them. Also, be careful when scheduling. Once a youngster joins a team you must stress that they have an obligation to the team to be there and that may sometimes mean missing something else that they would rather do, but it is a leson in responsibility nonetheless.

Also consider becoming a coach or an assistant coacj yourself. I knew nothing about sports growing up and played none (uber-geek even in the 70s and 80s) but this past season I was an assistant softball coach. I learned along with the kids over the years and got to do something new myself. It's a great feling for both of you.

But if you are converting from 1080i to 720p, yuu don't have any other choice, do you?

The full names for these are 1080i60 and 720p60. That means that you are getting an interlaced 1080i field (which is 540 lines) 60 times per second. Since 720p60 gets a full 720 lines 60 times per second, you have to take the half of the 1080 that you have in that 60th of a second and scale it up to 720 then you have to do the same again for the other field.

It would be different for 1080p, but there are very few (if any) 1080p60 sources.

So, your 1 pixel line would not turn into a jagged line, it would just be there half the time and show interlace artifacts just like any 1-pixel line in an interlaced signal.
