I used to work for a computer store...it was a mom and pop type place but the idea still stands. Linux distros update regularly...Windblows updates every few years. So you end up with alot of old unsalable copies of Linux on the shelf each time an update is released. It just doesnt sell fast enough to warrent the loss each time there is an update released because no one wants to buy the old version.
What do the heat specs really matter? If its designed to run hot than there is no problem with it running hot. As long as it stays within spec and doesnt throttle down performance to stay cool does it really matter what temp the processor runs at?
The real difference is that you dont have to reverse engineer your car to get the codes. They are freely given to you via existing output ports in the engine compartment or under your dash. The only thing they are trying to do is make the output of these ports open information. They arent saying that it is ok to go in and reverse engineer your cars computer to hack in faster acceleration or higher horsepower (although on some cars that can be done).

Is Swap Necessary?

I think I didnt get my point across...or missread the reply...anyhow what I was talking about was PCI cards that used DIMMs to make a physical drive with RAM thus allowing a swap drive that is as fast (or close anyhow) to the speed of the memory rather than the speed of a hard drive. See cards such as the rocket drive for reference to what I mean.

There are thrid party cards out there that use standard dimms to make ram drives...woulnt the ultimate performance come from loading up one of these and putting your swap there? Then you would have the benifits of swap space but the speed of ram. That to me seems ideal.
Sure there might be some leakage...and the channels may get some interfearance...but that would mean that the networking signal would be getting interfearance too. And hence they will move to a "cleaner" frequency to lessen the problem...so if there is a problem its a problem for both...and hence they will work together to avoid such problems.
Reminds me of the Vanilla Ice / Queen thing where he sung his dings on TV..."No no no ours goes ding ding ding ding ding ding ding....see the difference?"
If I scored one point in a game and the other team scored 100 I dont think I would consider that a worthy achievment. When they come close or pass Intel in TOTAL sales for even a week is when I will actually give them the credit of having a "worthy achievment".
Isnt this the same question that can be asked of a case moder? I mean look at the market for premoded cases and the amount of web pages and information dedicated to the topic...this is just a pre moded laptop thats all...nothing new really.
FreeBSD is dying about as much as Linux, Windows, or the MacOS is...they are all viable operating systems and they all have their place in the computer world. They all have good support, a good sized user base, and perform well at their intended tasks. That is my genaric rant/reply to all the "X is dying" people.
I personaly prefer the other options...my methods are as follows:
1) Wait a 6-12 months...buy it for $10 on discount DVD and own it forever 2) Wait 18 months and buy it for $5.50 on Wal-Marts elcheapo DVD wall...and own it forever 3) If you REALLY must see it right away and dont want to own it for some silly reason just get it on pay-per-view ($4 here)...then you can usualy see it before it even hits DVD!
The video states that the top two cost in the hundreds of millions to build...but never says how long ago. Dont get me wrong the Mac cluster is quite impressive and inexpensive but the price to power ratio has been changing quite rapidly just in the last few months! So if you rebuilt the top two today how would they rank pricewise?
Ahhh...makes much more sence...I took the your post as meaning that you did not use MacOS at all. Hence the wonder of why the use Mac hardware vs genaric PC hardware. Yes...I can see only runnig the MacOS from within Linux and when needed to be quite benificial, you get two OSes in one essentially...and neither are Windows.
Why spend all the money for a mac if you are going to JUST run Linux? Why not just go with a less expensive PC? Now I understand if you are dual booting...but otherwise it seems rather silly....please correct me here though if I am missong something.
I must disagree...I mean look at something like XP. It is widely used and you have your choice between XP mode or 9x mode. There hasnt, as far as Im aware, been a huge amount of trouble cause by this at all to the end user.
I would be interested in seeing how technology like this would work for someone like myself who only has one good eye. Would it act just like a "2D" monitor when it was in "3D" mode or would I only be able to see half of the pixels?

Hate to tell you this but there are 5 out there already:
DreamSpec by BigBoy
ZXishSpectrum by Ishmair
Spectrum128K by Reaper
DC Speccyal K by _Tyrell_
fbzxDC by Ian Michael
So it tracks your ad viewing? Sounds like spyware to me...nothing new to see here move along.
Need I say more? IMDB it if you dont believe me!

I think my best trade was when I got my wife out of the deal :) And people say computer repair doesnt pay well ;)

Dont forget about the porn...Kazaa is great for sharing porn...not just music! Collage students and old people alike love porn!
Personaly I prefer SATAN (security administartor tool for analysing networks)

It costs between $2245 and $8445 depending on the configuration you want.

Actually you can...its just a standard PC built into the case...it runs XP behind their fancy front end.

Probably the same time they add WMA support ;)
