While I was overseas I had some yank dead convinced that this was true. That was until one of the other aussies just couldn't stand it anymore and burst out in hysterical laughter.. damn was that american's face red:).
The same here in Aussie. Telstra owns most of the ADSL infrastructure, so our company chooses Telstra for broadband services. Now we have has situations where Telstra blamed Telstra for problems and we got nowhere. This is because the retail and wholesale internet are two completely independant business units.
Telstra Retail actually has to go through the same painfull channel every other ISP goes through to get their connections, not favourites (in theory at least).
We aim to disprove one of the fundamental requirements of a secure message digest: No two inputs can be found which produce the same digest
That is an incorrect assumption. The fundamental requirement is: It is hard (next to impossible) to find two inputs which produce the same digest (and still make sense
The message digest is usually shorter than the message, so this means that the digest contains less "information" that the message. Which means there will be more than one message for the same digest. This loss of "information" means also that you cant reverse a hash to get the original message and be 100% certain you have the right message. There is an infinite number of messages that produce that hash.
I used to be shy and I think that sorta led to my Geekyness. When i was about 10, my mum sent me to Scouts. It changed my life. Not right away, but gradually over the last 11 years. I learnt how to interact with others and it built my confidence to no end. I think it was around 15 when i turned into an extrovert, and I am still with the organization to this day.
Plus as a related note, you meet a lot of chicks on camp (well not in the backward US) that have something in common and that improved social skills to no-end.
Ah, well, lets see. On a "normal computer" (P4, 1.8ghz, 512mb) one of our customer regularly spend 45mins rendering their CAD stuff. Now we supplied them with a new computer Dual Xeon 2.8ghz 2GB RAM Matrox 650 Video Card
And now thier rendering is at 7mins. They paid AUD$10000 for it (US$8000 approx). But they are more than happy with the result.
My point is there are still applications out there that require a lot of grunt, and the video card does play a role, small it might be but it adds up.
I believe that replying to a spam with unsubscribe or whatever will NOT increase your chances of getting more spam significantly.
Why?
Because if there is no non-deliverable message sent back to the spammer, that email address is already marked as active. The spammer knows which email addresses make a successfull delivery anyway and chances are very good that that email address actually has someone reading it.
We use the 1200A for our clients who are to cheap to go SCSI (or for home system). The 1200A from Adaptec works perfectly for us with Seagate/IBM drives, we have about 5 deployed with no problems. The interface is easy to use and setup is a breaze, I highly recommend it.
Alternativly if you want to go a bit more high end the 1210SA (I think) is a Serial ATA RAID card. Hook that up to two Western Digital 10k RPM Raptors and you got some nice fast RAID, but not much space.
Two things to note: 1) As others have said this will only protect against HDD failures, not File System corruption, viruses and user stupidity (admit it we've all done it). Get some backup. 2) Western Digital Parralel ATA drives 40GB-120GB have a problem with RAID so avaid them like the plague.
Security really, because you may put the laptop back in the bag after hibernating it. It may get stolen, so it is safest to auto-password protect it so that all the encrypted files will remain that way. The chances of a laptop being stolen while being used are remote.
We even have this on our workstations at work. The policy is to lock workstations when you are away.
Demand a non-thermal reciept for anything your going to keep longer than a week. Remember the law (at least here) says that you have to keep your reciepts (that you claim on tax) for at least 7 YEARS. This means that the Tax Office can after 7 years demand to see what you have claimed and they would be mighty pissed off if all the reciepts were blank.
It's really their own fault. Any enterprise running mission critical systems should pach their systems. It doesn't matter Windows has more flaws than Linux. A solid security policy is a must regardless of OS.
Several people have mentioned that Telstra is the only ADSL provider in Australia. That is not infact true, rslcom (www.rslcom.com) also provide ADSL. They use all their own equipment and put it in the exchanges, the only part of the telstra network they use is two pieces of copper (no switching or anything). Their major reseller is request (www.request.com)
Microsoft are bastards but they're not stupid. If this was true it would be solid evidence against them. In court there is no question wether MS has a monopoly or not, it's just wether they abused it or not. This is quite a blatant abuse of power.
Not true, my company usually signs the IP over to the customer. So they can do what they want with it and we can't use it for another customer.
There is some difference with generic components. If they are paying us AU$110 an hour they expect we don't use the stuff we do in that time for the competition.
"Proprietary software is a social and ethical problem, and the point of GNU is to solve that problem."
WTF? That just makes someone think the writer is a total nutcase fanatic, with a broad statement like that. It's an absurd claim that really isn't backed up by any facts.
Yes free software is better, but to say it's a social and ETHICAL problem is going WAY to far. It's almost communist. like say:
"Selling food for profit is a social and ethical problem, kwikimarts should be closed down"
There's your problem right away. Shitty motherboard manufacturer. Buy if your going ECC Ram, at least get a respectable motherboard like Asus or Intel.
Intel has a list of tested and approved RAM on it's web site and it will guarantee that they work together.
The cheap motherboards and RAM are cheap because they have not gone through rigourous testing to make sure that they are ok. It's the same with brand vs no-brand stuff. Often the same manufactur makes the components, but because the branded stuff (ie Kingston vs OEM) is tested and that costs a bit extra.
Buy cheap crap (I know you paid a lot for it, but it was ECC) and you will get burn eventually.

At least one person with their head screwed on. Some people need to get into the real world.
It corrupts. See WD website and search the KB.

Sorry, You are correct. They are a Business ADSL provider, so they compete in that area.

Interesting how they say "unauthorized software" instead or "pirated software"

I just have to say Wooooopppppiiiieeeeee
hmm.. They didn't do an intel board with that chipset, would have been interesting, they're really good boards
