50% of jobs out there arn't advertised. Go to the employers directly, send in your resume. It shows initiative if you call a company and ask to speek to HR or the hirer, depending on the size of the company. I work for a small company (im not out of uni yet) and have heard that small companies are good for jobs, but don't advertise much. I hear this stuff through the "channel". Network some Wetware and hunt down a job.
Visual Studio.NET - No competing product on linux Word - Sure I could use Open Office, but the UI sucks PowerPoint - I won't even go into how KDE and OpenOffice handle powerpoint PDF - Adobe is easy on windows, a Pain in the ass on linux UI - Some of the less popular apps just don't live up to the windows equivalents Windows XP - stable and easy to use
Perhaps you should form a sub-committee to investigate if that act is offensive. And then another sub-committee to liase with the offended person and to properly record their feelings. Then form a sub-sub-committee to assess the performance of both sub-committees.
Perhaps at that stage everyone will have forgotton why any of the committees was formed in the first place and it the whole thing will blow over.
I have found from the projects I worked on for my company that business applications almost always need some sort of database. Databases are just easy to work with and are fast.
For example a recent project required that it stores 500 000 records (relating to cotton btw) of around 15 columns each. Now if think of that number and how long it would find a particular row or change a set of data. the MS SQL database we used on modest hardware was damn quick, quicker than could be imagined in fact.
Anyway SQL is like so usefull. With a proper structured SQL query you can do some amazing stuff, very quickly and with very little effort.
I'm a student at an Australian University. I believe that we get a well rounded education. In my Software Engineering/Data Communications course we learn about:
- Java, c, c++ - Software engineering process - Perl and web development - Internet, TCP/IP stack - OSI - Linux/Unix commands - GCC, grep, etc - Databases, SQL
There's an emphisis on theory not actual programs used. They do not tie us to any specific program. They recomend that we use a basic text editor for coding, none of this IDE stuff. And specific products are only mentioned if it makes sense (ie cisco stuff)
Oh.. My.. GOD... We're going to have to actually look like... PROFESSIONALS..
Seriously IT is the only profession that would allow that kind of dress. Do you see a lawyer or an engineer (a real one) wearing jeans? Even the engineers who go on construction sites wear long pants and ties.
I hear that people are saying it would be difficult to port Windows XP to RISC chips (and new 64bit arch). This infact is not true. In the Windows NT family there are 2 features that make it easy:
1) It's mostly written in c/c++
2) The HAL (Harware Abstraction Layer) contains most of the platform specific code. As I understand it the kernel does not actually handle the hardware directly
Ofcourse I can see it going like this:
1) Apple, Intel, AMD and Moterola put forward new Chip designs
2) They ask MS to support it with their OS
3) MS picks Intel

My laptop (a Toshibia ofcourse) comes with said software. I can transfer files to anyone with similar software. It's so easy I don't even know how it works, it just does.
Perhaps you posted this story cause your too lazy to look for this software?

Let's see 1) Use Unix to teach IT courses 2) Use Windows only in passing 3) Graduate 4) Can't get no job cause you have no expirience in using the predominant OS
We do systems for small businesses where there is no IT staff. We use those RAID controlers with alarms. When one of the disks fails the noise is so loud that we get a call within 1min.
Do you have any idea what you're talking about? In EE 101, you learn that every load can be represented as a resistor. V=IR, period. for DC Electricity
Is it a) Cell phones make people act stupid? or b) Stupid people use cell phone a lot?
Many people miss the concept to cause-effect in many cases. The mainstream media often does not realize that if effect A and effect B are related it may be A causes B OR B causes A
The classic one is Marijuana and Schizophrenia. There have been studies that linked Marijuana use to schizophrenia. They have decided if Marijuana use causes Schizophrenia or Schizoprenics are more likely to use Marijuana.
We actually found a relevant use for the sledgehammer once. We were insterested what is inside on of those slot 1 Pentiums, so we took a sledge hammer to it on the tech room floor.
Another thing to have is a hacksaw (the cut-through-metal kind), VERRRY useful.
Of course i could see you working from the moon with the 1 second round trip for signals. That would make your Windows and X Terminal sessions chunk something cronic
Whn I got my job, my boss made it clear to me that when we're behind it will be nessisary to put in lots of hours (not excessive about 60-70hours/week).
Now, I am fine with that because he does not place unrealistic expectations on me, and when times are slow allows me to take days of randomly. I get paid by the hour, so any extra time I work, I get paid for. Also my boss is not one of those M-F, 8-5 people. He lives for his work and works 7days, 10am-midnight.

Now Caffine by IV would be nice as mentioned in the article. Leaves both hands free for typing
U hu, and you don't call ISA a firewall? It comes bundled with SBS 2000.

Why go to the hassle of replacing something that you already have paid for and works well?
SQL server is easier to set up and maintain than many other Database software. Why do you want to replace it?
lets do some maths here:
Total Number of items = 1300
Total Weight of items = 12kg
= 12000g
Average weight of stuff = 12000/1300
= 9.23g
Now you how many things do you know that weight 9.23 and are usefull?
I carry 10001 usefull things around with me every day. 100 packets of 100 zippy ties, plus some duct tape.

I thought it only happened in China or Arabia Saudi or the US...

The quality of a piece of hardware is directly proportional to the price, else someone would make the equivalent part cheaper. This holds for:
Cheap Expensive
----- ---------
AMD Intel
Soltek/Via Intel
Memory Certified ECC Memory
Maxtor IBM
Dell Toshiba
Anyone who has built a server with Intel or Intel approved parts can vouch for them being god-damn good things.

Well, putting aside that most of europe was/is recently covered in water, here in Australia we are having a major drought.
Most of the water on the earth is salty and of the freshwater only 2% of that is drinkable and accessable
The last bit of the article made me think...
Is it

or
b) Stupid people use cell phone a lot?

Anyone notice the lack of gloves in the photo. These people must be insane.. or just geniuses if they are pouring liquid Nitrogen with bare hands...
