GI: It's been rumored that the new big Revolution secret is the fact that the nun chuck controller is also motion detecting...

Nintendo of America's Public Relations Manager Matt Atwood: Really. That's interesting. I would say 9:30 in the morning on Tuesday of E3 will be filled with surprises and I would just show up. Because there's been a ton of speculation. Some of it's right. Some of it's not. We'd say that if that's the only secret you're expecting you're going to be very surprised.

I think whatever the big secret may be is still securly under wraps. After all, the controller was a complete surprise when it hit. I have a feeling whatever the big surprise is, it hasn't been leaked. Whether anyone else outside of N thinks its that awesome is up for debate.

I don't understand why everyone thinks that to play games on the Wii you are going to have to be "standing up flaiing" your arms. Unless the game is "Mario Standing Up and Flailing Party Fun Game!" I am pretty sure you will be sitting and moving slightly for most games.

    4) Can happen with a "standard" contoller.
    5) The Wii isn't a portable device, so you should never be in motion. And if you are, then assumably the sensors and tv will be as well, at the same rate, making it all relative, or more to the point, irrelevant.

I am assuming this is a putdown on Flash video, being Slashdot and all. The ABC site is dragging ass, so I can't actually see the quality for myself. That being said...

Flash video can encode as high a quality as any other encoder. Some of the stuff I have seen looks better than other encoders, and always results in amazingly small file size. Just this morning, I saw a 4 minute, 720x480 AVI go from 890MB to 15MB with virtually no loss in quality.

If the quality is poor, blame the developer, not the tool.

  7. Re:Defaults vs. Presets on Microsoft's IE7 Search Box Bugs Google · · Score: 4, Insightful

The problem with that defense of Firefox and Google is that Firefox doesn't ask you to specify which one you would like to use, it just defaults to it. And as the summary points out, MSN isn't even an option. Google isn't bitching about that, because it is in their favor (default home page is also a Google site), as opposed to IE7, which isn't.

The stronger case is made in the fact that, when released, IE7 will become the dominant browser on the market. So whatever the default is set to, is probably going to remain on a bulk of the computers it is on. But if someone is going to bitch about setting a default without asking, the same standard should apply to Firefox/Google.

First of all, you just can't have Doc Brown as a Klingon. I know Search came before Back to the Future, but it just doesn't work after seeing both.

Second, Generations was just...rough. I admit it has been a while, but I remember being fairly dissatisfied with it. Shatner was forced obviously forced into the plot, and it didn't work. I also remember being unimpressed with the "crash landing" scene.

And I would also move Final Frontier down to the end. The others might be crap, but come on. Of all of the movies, Final Frontier was the least plausible, as it were. And to top it off, you could tell no one making the movie cared.

  10. Discounts on Dell's Marketshare Decline Due to Intel? · · Score: 1

Dell has sold well because they overprice their machines, then offer "huge discounts" to their consumers, particularly their laptops. Anyone who spends more than 5 minutes looking for information on a Dell can find these discounts.

What the public isn't aware of, however, is that these "huge discounts" just bring the price down to what it should have been in the first place. But they don't know that. They just see that they are getting a $2000 machine for $1250. And those poor souls (pun intended) who never find them are seriously overpaying.

As for the slow down - I hope it is because the public is catching on to this, though Dell's customer service reputation probably isn't helping either. I seriously doubt Joe Sixpack is purposely not buying Dell because they don't sell AMD. I would imagine he cares more about price and support than what exactly is under the hood.
