  9. ZEM on Active Noise-Canceling Headsets In Server Rooms? · · Score: 1

I've used Sony noise-cancelling headphones, and found them only marginally helpful. Foam earplugs helped block the fan noise, but, as others have commented, they can make you hyper-conscious of the sound of your breathing and your heartbeat; I also find them painful. The best solution I've found are ZEM hearing protectors. They're about $20, lightweight, and work well. They're great for planes, too.

  10. American failures on Real-Time Computer-Based Translation in Iraq · · Score: 1

What I find most offensive is when words that are not verbs, are made into verbs

English derives its power from this sort of flexibility. There is nothing wrong with it per se, except from a prescriptivist viewpoint.

  15. empty talk of emptiness on Pr0n's Effect On Society · · Score: 4, Informative
Most addictions are to do with internal emptiness, wanting to fill up dead space

This a Freudian canard. Addiction is a neurochemical phenomenon; that's not to say that some sort of therapy might not be helpful in repairing the damage caused by the addiction, but there is simply no evidence that "emptiness" is at the root of addiction.

Don't be ridiculous. There are used goods stores all over Japan. When I lived in Tokyo I bought all my furniture and appliances used, and used to hang out in Jimbocho, where there are literally hundreds of used bookstores, and quite a few stores selling used musical instruments.

Back in 1991 or 1992, PC Magazine reviewed several GUIs for DOS, including Windows. GEOS, also known as GeoWorks, was their clear favorite. Microsoft's success has never been based on innovative technology, but on marketing.
