yeah, except chevy has to pay for the metal, labor , and would go bankrupt... microsoft, they could afford to give away 'window xp' especially since it drives you towards other products of their that make plenty of money, like locking you into IE to help their server business, locking you into their office software, etc. Also, in their trial it came up that they oculd have afforded to sell Win98 for 40-50 and still made money, but instead, they decided on $89 and $190. Thanks, MS. NOt to mention, they make about $900 Million a month in profit.
A webcomic had a great series on micropayments... if an author gets everyone who reads your comic to pay 1 cent, the authors wudl make much mroe money than they do fromthe current system!! However, the logistics of a payment system for that have yet to be worked out.

for a well presented comic about this.
No, they don't call Gate's character into question..
Uh, he has been shown to be a dishonest, obsessed, immature, petty, grudge holding, backstabbing, ruthless, and otherwise distasteful individual... not to mention evasive under oath to the point of being ridiculous.
I don't think John Romero is anythign like that, except maybe when playing Quake.... probably if he was, Ion Storm would be doing great!
Sure, but the title is a strange angle. I agree slashdot and the register editorialize more, but ZDnet slips in editorialzations in less obvious ways, under the guise of journalism... thats a bit different.
Still, i'm surprised and pleased they ran the story.
Especially with how they are supplying MSN with every computer at best buy now, and what used to be good Qwest/Uswest dialup service is now MSN, many people have already given MS their billing info for the same reason AOL has it. (Speaking of how MSN took over Qwest dialup and DSL, my friend in New Mexico says his DSL went from $50 unlimited to $50 for... 10 HOURS!!! Thanks MS, I'll try cable...)
Still though, whats worse, entrusting your data to Microsoft, running their own software, or entrusting your data to a bank or insurance company who runs Microsoft's software? Thats a tough question, actually.
".Net vote rigging illustrates importance of Web services" Oh, I thought "Net Rigging Illustrates Dishonesty of Microsoft" or something like that, or perhaps the fact they they have a hard time imagining competing in a market where they don't have domination or some massive advantage.
"The inevitable conclusion is that these are some of the first salvos in what will be a bitter PR struggle. Microsoft may have shot itself in the foot this time, but future efforts may be a little more subtle." Um, yeah, Microsoft just started their first PR war and they might start using sneaky tactics soon! Um, anyone can go read http://www.mackido.com/History/Where_is_stack.html if they think MS's tactics are anything new... the company has been doing the same shit for at least 10-15 years, if not more...
Well, I guess this dishnoesty probably wasn't official. More like just some sucky group of MS employees, I guess...
What, losing your personal data AND having to reinstall your system is somehow worse than simply losing your personal data while your system continues to function?... sure, if you love reinstalling your OS...
MS's original plan was to make a set top box. However, developers told them they didn't want anythign to do with one of those. of course, MS hasn't really changed it's mind, rathger, they chose to basically deceive the developers, which seems to be a hobby for them, or at least a habit.
Of course, this is the direction Sony wants to take with the PS2 also.
it's easy to imagine MS making an Xbox/UltimateTV and more combo. Sounds pretty crappy to me. I wonder if Commander Taco will still want one.
Hmm, unless there is a mail client that is considered part of the OS that will automatically execute certain binary attachments if tricked by mime types. If you haven't heard of that vulnerability, which has been actively exploited, please read up... and clearly, it has much to do with the lack of security and general shoddy design of Microsoft's software.
">Xbox is a computer used for gaming, PS2 and moreso GCN are game consoles used for gaming."
And just what do you think a computer is? Moron..
The xbox is lame for a console because that X86 architecture doesn't exactly persist for its efficiency!! PLus, it running a MS operating system, so you might as well shave 20% off it's stats to compare it to other systems for those two things alone... crappy OS, and legacy hardware...
They have enough cash to try again and again...
assmilating features from their competition each time, in true innovative fashion.
Pretty much a clear sign of wretched mediocrity...
I have seen in plenty of other places where the NPD numbers are used a note that they do not include Walmart, Nintendo's largest retailer. This article is amiss in not making that clear, and in using the NPD 'Estimates' at all because they aren't reliable, from what I can tell.
My girlfriend was disappointed that the gamecube could not also function as a DVD player.
Perhaps I can get her one of these, and take my gamecube back here, into my lair, with my computer! Where it belongs! Grahaha
Away from the vile, fuzzy television.
Tube amps produce a nicer sound for guitar distortion. Both in the preamp (usually an eq and distortion) stage and the amplification stage, tubes are 'overdriven', creating hta sound we all love. The relationship between teh input level an amount of distortion is a curve for tubes. For transistors, its a straight line. This makes tubes have a more 'responsive' feeling. As you play louder it gets more distorted. Basically, it can siund better. For some type of music, though, people prefer solid state distortion (a certain metal sound).
For reproducing already recorded music, a solid state amp is more desirable - any distortion added in playback is distorting what the musician played, so theres no reason to play back music on a tube amp.
I have a 19" monitor, but screen real estate stil seems to be at a premium. the tabs are a lot easier to control. And, unlike Opera, You have the choice of using separate windows or tabs. I also don't care what most people are used to.
I don't like opening small windows within another window; I never do that.
I noted that the version of galeon prodcing this segfault is a bit old, 0.12.1! Oops. Might as well try upgrading some day.
Why exactly do version numbers go from 0.12.1-10 to 1.0, again?
I really enjoy Galeon. I liked Opera so much that I actually purchased it; Now, I use galeon and opera about 50/50. The ability to open windows in tabs istead of whole other application windows puts galeon and opera way above IE and Konqueror, to me. It really simplifies my browsing because I open lots of links in a new window.
However, Galeon starting exhibiting this bug when I try to open the main page ofslashdot (!):
CPromptService::Select: NOT IMPLEMENTED
And thenn it segfaults. Hmm, I didn't change anything and it started doing that. I can't get it to stop by deleting my config files. The only thing I find when i search for CPromptSelect is some old mozilla dev list stuff. Argh! I hope they fixed this problem! Surely galeon developers go to slashdot, right?
Anyhow, I love this browser! Good Job, everyone on the Galeon and Mozilla Teams!
ya mate, ya, this entire group of people that happen to live in a certain geographical and cultural area are uniformly 'fuckwits'. Well, i'll agree that 90% of Americans are morons, but i'm willing to wager tha 90% of all of the earth's inhabitants are morons.
heh. yeah, I agree. it couldn't really be that great to watch.
No to mention: "So far, the camera is only able to produce a faint blurry black-and-white image.
"
As usual, the rest of the media has already been trumped by the porn industry (the legendary (...) Dildo Cam!! Second only to the X10).
I can't imagine the view from the ball being particulary entertaining, compared to actually being able to see what the hell is going on.

Yeah, the one piece of software they make that doesn't suck is AOLServer, and actually, it rocks. I couldn't believe it either.

No, the walmart exception is widely listed in other articles (and these #s aren't eexactly brand new).

Yes.
they are trying to make Non-DRM OSes illegal,
while at the same time patenting DRM in an OS to prevent Linux from gaining these capabilities.
MS would like the shit off the filthiest floors if it would make them a few billion dollars. Whores.
