> Both sides seem to be pushing their agenda more than being concerned about the well-being of everyone, and it looks like each of them has something the other does not. So for crying out loud, sit down together, create the next super-format and transition to it! It will bring money to everyone involved, and create everlasting peace on Earth.
Have you had your eyes closed or what? MS pulled out from the ODF group. They can rejoin at any time.
And The MS format is just evil. The license agreements are unclear. This is what MS said:
"We are acknowledging that end users who merely open and read government documents that are saved as Office XML files within software programs will not violate the license."
Maybe there's no need to target pro thieves. What percentage of losses come from professional thieves, as opposed to kids or 'opportunist' thieves, or staff.
In the UK we use 240V. So we require half the current. Which means our loss to wires is 1/4 (P=I^2*R). So maybe that's why it doesn't matter that our power cables are underground.
Quarters... It was _you_ that jumped in to the request that people give feedback. Why on earth did you feel that you had to reply and say that you personally have never helped, and would never help. Clearly other people do help with FOSS, and other people still may want to but haven't yet. Since you are neither of these people then just ignore the call out. Why did you feel it as some sort of personal attack on you?
Um, almost every destressing book says you need to separate work and life. You need to be able to let go and not think about work during your free time.
People complain about the "real world", but many studies have shown that from 14 to 18 or so is the most stressful time of you life. When you have a job, you can separate the job and home. You can't do that when you're studying for exams.
It's funny that the same mistake was made with the Earth. The North pole is actually near the Earth's magnetic _south_ pole. Except we call the magnetic south pole the magnetic North pole, but it's a south pole.....
That is correct. To make it easier to defend your position, often a company will have one group read the protected code and write a spec. Then a second group will code the spec. This is quite common.
Not sure if "scientists" bare any of the responsibility. I somehow doubt the actual papers said 'missing link' in them at all. It's the journalists trying to dumb it down enough that the general public can understand.
Tell me about it. At my school they tried to get me to learn how to add two numbers together! I tried to explain that a calculator can do it, and therefore my time was being wasted in learning, but unfortunately that didn't go over so well.
Now, I have no school education, but I do have a fairly decent job NOT reinventing the wheel.
The people that put the code under the BSD license quite clearly gave Apple permission to do this. That is why I wrote: 'BSDs asked for this'. If it was me, under _my opinion_, then I would not have put my code under the BSD license because of this. You say Apple doesn't owe the community anything, but I think that if a company uses a large amount of open source code, then they should give back changes that they make to it (within reason - don't strawman this.)
I think "went to religious studies" is closer. And interestingly, at university level the people doing religious studies are also among those that are most likely to be liberal and non-religious.
Wow. I see my quote. I see your reply. However I cannot discern how you manage to misread my quote and get to the conclusion that Apple would have been forced to use the code no matter the license.
Besides, since either way it doesn't benefit the open source community, why exactly would we care if Apple based it on a proprietary OS rather than taking an Open Source solution then closing it? Or are you hoping that this way Apple might throw the open source community the odd dog treat?
If Apple went with a proprietary OS then at least they would be paying for the kernel in some way. That's better than nothing.
I've had 3 replies all the same the same thing. I put "fault" in quotes, mentioned that is was "my opinion" and also giving the view of others - surely that was obvious enough that this was my opinion.
Of _course_ Apple is happier that it's under the BSD license!
I'm not convinced that you could bet that Apple wouldn't have worked with the code if it was GPL'ed though and there was no other decent BSD licensed unix kernel.
And what's with the strawman "complete OS X source". If the kernel was under the GPL then they would have had to just made sure that their kernel work in kept open source. I don't really see that as unreasonable personally. Shame on you for trying to strawman this.
I'm sorry to say this, but this is BSD's 'fault'. They put the kernel under the BSD license - a license that allows for this to happen.
In my opinion, this is why the BSD license is bad. However in many other people's opinion this is why the BSD license is good - because it gives you the freedom to fork and close source it.
Whether it's better to have the 'freedom for the code' (GPL, LGPL somewhat, etc) or the 'freedom for the person' (BSD) is of course a personal opinion.
Neither of the two words in your nick seem to exist. Google and dictiony.com finds neither. I'm guessing you meant to write magniloquent for the second one, but no idea for the first.
Oh jeez, give me a break. They are made naturally all the time in our atmosphere. Do you have any idea how much energy cosmos radiation has?
Not to mention the hot plasmas that jump between the North and South poles - the particles travelling so fast that they go from one end of the Earth, to hundreds of miles out, then back in to the other end of the Earth all within a few seconds. Imagine that. Seriously.
We can't yet approach the energies that we see around us.
I'm not sure if you're being sarcastic since what you say is quite extreme. A free market is not always best. You need a mix of socialism and free market. The US is one of the richest countries and most capitalist, and yet by far does not have the highest standard of living. Why is that?
> Every supporter of ODF sounds as if ODF is the most used format world-wide and the de facto standard.
Oh dear Lord.
Can you please find me all these supports of ODF that think that ODF is the most used format please?
This post is a troll.

You make it sound even worse! Why do they enforce certain brands?
If you repeatedly parked every day because you could pay the normal fine without worrying? hmm, seems like a good idea.

Um, almost every destressing book says you need to separate work and life. You need to be able to let go and not think about work during your free time.
And it's highly recommended to not live like that when you are self-employed.
People complain about the "real world", but many studies have shown that from 14 to 18 or so is the most stressful time of you life. When you have a job, you can separate the job and home. You can't do that when you're studying for exams.
Reversed? So you can reprint it and distribute it, but you can't actually read it? :)

An excellent example, in linux do:
mplayer somefile.avi -vo aa
It's amazing how well you can make it out. But pause it and it's much more difficult.

The first solid state transistor took 10 years of work!
