Since I don't need emoticons and speak in complete words (are and you are three letter words, abreviating them only makes you look stupid) I've stuck to ICQ. I have a copy of 2000b on cd with other apps I use frequently so that when I wipe my hard drive (about once a year) I don't have to hunt them down. Why use such an older client? Simple, my database is stored locally and not on some AOLTW server.

As for the ads on ICQ, just use ICQ+. The skins kill any ads you are supposed to see and there are currently thousands of skins on various sites.

Good luck finding some of these thanks to the though police and overly sensative politically correct. The classic "mammy" voice on Tom & Jerry has been replaced with that of what appears to be a harvard graduate. Certain era aged cartoons such as Nip the Nips (a Bugs Bunny from the World War II days) are no where to be found. While I may or may not agree with the socio-political message of said cartoons it is a real shame that some network will alter history to apease the poor feelings of someone or a group of someones who wasn't probably alive at the time this was made.

I've begun looking for these online and in older stores. Hopefully I can teach my daughter what really happened, and not some candy coated and PC version of history.

Why is it every time I hear someone talking about addresses in this regard they always praise DSL? Sure my cable modem is dynamic, but if you are truly running a server then the machine won't be offline anyway and will pick up the same IP from the DHCP server when the lease expires. Odd that I have managed to keep this address for over a year with TimeWarner, kept the same one with AT&T in MA for the six months I lived there and had one for over 3 years under Comcast in FL.

There are also plans for static addresses which are roughly $20 more per month. Why this is such a big deal I have no idea other than they are now marketing broadband to AOL users (and no, that's not a flame but merely a description of the mom and grandma type users they want on now) who will turn off their machines when they aren't in use.

Next time some forty-something jaundiced manager pushes the application for a supermarket "bonus program" into your face kindly accept it, and then give completely false information except for your address. Then duplicate that info for your own records. Sit back a month or two and see who else starts sending you "bonus buys" as well.

In contrast, are the savings you've racked up really worth the information and privacy you've given them? Perhaps, if you buy ice cream bars by the truckload. ;)

  6. Re:The Superiority of PHP over Perl on PHP and MySQL Web Development · · Score: 3, Interesting
    • Outstanding database support. PHP supports virtually every DB under the sun (although Berkeley DB is missing, oddly enough.) Perl seems limited to MySQL and PostgreSQL, and its really a kludge for the later. I've heard that this will be fixed in upcoming versions of Perl though.
    • Portability. I can take PHP code off my Linux box and plop it onto an IIS server, or even one of those new Macintosh servers and have it run without having to change a single line of code. Try doing this with Perl! Its as though it was written in assembly, Perl requires that much rewriting.
    • Graphics. PHP comes with a nice little graphics library. While I wouldn't use its to code the new Doom (VB would be a better choice) its adequate for most web pages, and should be considered as a substitute for Flash for certain things. Perl lacks a graphics library of any kind.

I'll just use 3 of your reasons for now. Perl's DBI supports every database I've ever encountered, from the aforementioned MySQL to Oracle to Cache. Sorry, but no points there.

Other than any odd system calls where I shell out the only line of code I ever need change when moving from Linux to a Windows server (note I said Windows and not IIS.. the webserver is irrelevant) is the first line (the shebang). This is considerably easier when everything is a module but my earlier work requires less than a minute to update as well.

Perl has ImageMagick for graphics manipulation. Available in most flavors I've had great success with it in many areas. I was looking for an image gallery script and saw millions of php ones that were horrid and decided to write my own. Took less than 15 minutes to get everything downloaded and installed and a few more to write the scripts.

This isn't meant as a flame but your priase of php seems more likely to be a lack of understanding of Perl or just laziness.

Then perhaps they should stop overselling the bandwidth they have. Cry me a river about not having enough bandwidth but when the cable company is aggressively marketing _everyone_ and getting a fair amount of those people to subscribe then there's less bandwidth for everyone. I was among the fortunate ones to beta test Comcast's (then @home) service when they rolled it out and it was like being in the building when I worked for an ISP. A year later however there was a very noticable difference in speeds as the Marketards had been spamming the radio, tv, and phone lines with ads tauting "100 times dialup" speeds (nevermind the fact they are claiming this against 28.8, and wtf still has that?). Don't get me wrong, I know they laid out $500M in fibre to upgrade the next county in order to offer digital cable and broadband but the same thing is going to happen to the people there as well. Lesson? Only sell what you can afford to give and maybe you'll keep some of your customers happy.
