    It isn't "piracy": that's armed robbery on the high seas. It isn't "stealing": that is permanently depriving a person of his property. It is copyright infringement, and those who do it may deserve to be sued, but they do not deserve to be imprisoned.

    Note: "Copyright infringement is not theft" is not just my opinion. It is established precedent in the US legal system.

    Why not? Install a louvered thermostatically controlled exhaust fan and provide a louvered intake opening a few feet away. You want hinged louvers that close by gravity and are pushed open by the air from the fan.

    QT has been released under the GPL. This most definitely does not put it in the public domain. If these people can't tell the difference there is no reason to take them seriously. They don't know what the hell they are talking about.

    Which apparently just checks the version number and will therefor falsely identify Debian stable machines as vulnerable despite their being up to date on security patches.

    If software engineering requires a license what becomes of Free Software written by unlicensed individuals such as myself? Would we be expected to pay a licensed engineer a couple of hundred bucks to approve it? Would you require all Debian developers to get their licenses?

    Debian is readily available for a modest price on CD from vendors such as Cheap Bytes. Since all the software in Debian is Free you can purchase a few sets of CD's and then duplicate them as needed. You can even resell the duplicates to help defray your costs.

    Debian policy requires that scripts that use bashisms (that is, non-POSIX features) use #!/bin/bash and not #!/bin/sh. The goal is to be able to link any POSIX shell to /bin/sh and not have anything break. For my own scripts (some of which have run to 1000 lines) I confine myself to sh features documented in my old copy of Kochan and Wood.

    First you will have to tell us what a "real" Bourne shell is. It's not as if there is a standard.

    You might or might not like ash. It is much smaller than bash, but on the other hand it tries even harder than bash to be POSIX compliant.

    LVM is not a SuSE exclusive. It comes with many other distributions (Debian, for example) and can be installed on any. Please save phrases such as " As distributions like SuSE continue pushing ahead with high-end features" for the suits.

    The kernel and all the standard packages fit easily on one CD, even with source. It's the 5000+ applications and their sources that require all that space. You can install as many or as few as you want.

    What they would require is probably knowledge of Front Page and Flash, experience with Dreamweaver, and a degree in Graphic Design.

    What they should require is no training whatsoever in "graphic arts", no experience at all with any "WYSIWIG" tools, a degree in Library Science, and extensive experience navigating the Web with Lynx. Being totally blind would be a plus.

    This guy is in rural Canada, not downtown LA.
    Rural fiber gets plowed in. Two fiber cables cross my land, and I watched both go in. The 'dozers laid cable at the rate of about 1/2 mile per hour and there isn't a manhole every mile, let alone every 1000 feet.

    You appear to be equating Linux with x86. This is incorrect. Debian GNU/Linux is available now on half a dozen architectures with another half dozen ports well underway.

    You also need to understand that the Linux community is very diverse. The hostility to commercial products that you have seen comes from people who don't represent the majority: no one does that (except perhaps Linus).

    I'm resigned to the fact that commercial software usually "requires" RedHat, but I find it more than a little offputting that a Free Software project would do so.

    So unethical, in fact, as to possibly be fraudulent. If I ever receive such a letter I will file a complaint with my state attorney general. I urge others to do likewise.
