No dice with that application. These things use entirely different environmental chips and as of yet, there is no place I can find that has an application with ProBook support. But I can tell you, I've had this laptop on my lap for about an hour and a half now in a server room where ambient temp is 71 degrees F and a slight breeze from the A/C units. The bottom is definitely warm, but not to the point of burning you... however, from experience yesterday, much like my 12" 1.5Ghz Powerbook G4 that this (2.0Ghz MacBook Pro (ProBook)) heats up significantly under load or on an insulating surface like my bed! To the point of being very hot! This machine doesn't run any cooler nor very much hotter than any other Powerbook.

The switch was more about performance per watt and the fact that the Core Duo doesn't melt if it doesn't have a huuuuuge heatsink on it.

In any case, I love this thing dispite a few flaws here and there. (P.S. no piece of computer equipment is perfect but this definitely suits me better than any other laptop).

While I'm spouting loveliness, I must point out the fact that nobody has released Intel recompiled codecs for OS X to be an EXTREME disappointment. Honestly, how hard are they to port to an OS X that's virtually the same? Flip4Mac? Nope. XviD? Nope. AC3? Nope. DivX? Yeah, ok, one! Granted the daily snapshot of VLC that's compiled for Intel works but you can kiss goodbye any kind of Quicktime integration until these guys get off their butt.

On the flip side, let me commend the good people at Keyspan... they DO have an Intel OS X driver for their USB-Serial adapter which makes it possible for me to completely get rid of my Dell from work since I needed a serial port to access routers, switches and sun boxes. A thousand high-fives to Keyspan.

It's different from cable because when you purchase a DVD, you're paying for one specific program whereas paying your cable bill gets you roughly 10,000 times more content. Granted you only watch a fraction of it.

Since everybody is so confused about the point I was making, I'll spell it out: I'm not debating the quality of all the content on TV, I'm defending TV as a delivery method. As of right now, the TV business model works. This will undoubtedly change in the future but I think if TV disappeared and we were only left with a system where we have to explicitly purchase the program we want, it'd be a much more miserable system due to the fact you need to be "aware" of things before you "want" to purchase them.

I'd agree with people that say most of TV content is crap. But jesus people, you don't have to like everything, in fact, it's better if you don't because that's what makes us individuals. And if you think you're only entertained by "high brow, intellectual" entertainment, I think you'd be surprised. You don't need to be running at 100% brain activity all the time, just relax, that's what entertainment is there for.

Just nitpicking here but I'm tired of people ragging on TV. People, mostly geeks, complain about how TV is just pure crap but then in the next breath they talk about a TV show they just bought on DVD. Ugh. So you don't hate TV for all of it's content obviously. But I will agree that about 1% of TV shows are "lowest common denomonator" that a majority of people can enjoy. So that leaves another 99% and of that you may like a huge chunk of it but obviously a sizeable piece of all TV is going to be "crap" to you. You can't win them all. Especially when there's hundreds of channels with about 12 hours per day of programming.

Channels serve a useful purpose to me. When I want to be "entertained" and I don't want to stress my already-indecisive brain, I just turn on the TV and "see what's on". I _hate_ hovering over a stack of DVDs and trying to decide what sounds appetizing to me at that moment. This is the same reason I prefer "radio" (sat. or mp3 streams) to playing straight mp3s or cds.

I rather let somebody do the deciding for me most of the time. Which of course freaks out anybody that is a control freak. Just relax, and say it with me: Everything will be ok.

Which also brings up that in the DVD method, titles need to be selected and paid for (either by renting or buying) before you watch them. I'm more of a try-before-you-buy chap.

    I'll keep my TV thanks.

The problem is that "Conspiracy Theorist" comes up numerous times in the post. Let me point out that I was one of the first to get angry about last night's story. I do not consider myself a "Conspiracy Theorist", here's why.

By definition, a "CT" takes nothing and makes it something, looking for subtle details and making them the backbone of a theory. The situation here that we're debating about isn't subtle! It's a brick to the side of the face!

    Our main moaning points are:

    1) BB has an _insane_ amount of submissions approved EXTREMELY disproportionately approved by ScuttleMonkey.

    2) BB is obviously abusing Google's page rank system by using Slashdot as a referer.

    3) BB has never (to my knowledge) posted in any discussions! His submissions are generic as you've already admitted.

#3 only reinforces #2. And #1 isn't a conspiracy theory made out of some subjective evidence, it's a freaking overwelming fact.

Seriously, I appreciate you trying to explain the situation but I also would love a little common sense. If you're _so_ hands off that you allow people to abuse the system even when we're screaming that they are, then that is just as bad if not worse as "editing submitters". If BB was actually a part of the community instead of a spammer that found a way to do his dirty work through Slashdot, then I may not "want blood". But as it stands, he isn't.

My personal vote is not to accept any BB posts because of glaring point #2 and #3. And I seriously doubt we'd be discussing this at all if it weren't for point #1.
