Just an idea... As we know Sony sell the PSPs at a loss, and make up the rest by selling the games. So, why don't they sell a PSP at cost + margin that will allow modding and homebrew?
A bit like with mobile phones, free or cheap when locked to a network. Full price if you want to use it however you want.

The HP e-pcs ( Grr what a dumbass name, e-pc... ) I have at work will boot off of USB. These pcs don't have a floppy drive so you can buy a USB one, not sure if it'll work with other storage devices though...
offtopic a bit... but I was thinking about IPv6... if every device has an address, mobile phone, mp3player, etc... when these devices break or get thrown away, the addresses will be lost
