lol, it doesn't have an affect when EU has very strong directives about dining places, cafes and so on in the southen parts like italy and spain, but they should supersede in P2P ? come on peopel, the EU has no global resources to waste on these kind of operations.
come on, even you don't believe that , do you ?
the fact is, directives are not laws, and not for fulfilling directives the blame gets the country, and not the person himself. at least until now it has worked liked that imho.
[e.g. germany as a country gets a financial hit if it doesn't make laws which are pursued by a directive, not the german people who break the directive.]
If any of you "american patriots" would know a thing about how EU works and even read a few lines from the article pointed out you would see that it will only be a directive not a law itself.
In pure English said like that : your country problaly(, we think and hope,) should make a law that somehow enforces the idea of the directive.
Don't jump into conclusions too quickly, the EU has far more important problems with economy and extending itself than doing anything about the P2P software.
I live in a country that will soon be in EU, and i don't worry about this directive for 5-6 years i think. At least so long will it take to make it affect all the countries in EU.
Besides, most good p2p clients we know are virtually dead already.
Even if the laws are ever made in the countries there are going to be clients who encrypt the data being sent to eachother and are considered as private as e-mailing or instant messaging, so none has really anything to say about it.
Nowadays even a msn bot is writeable which would work like some kind of p2p file sharing program, e.g. the bot reacts to questions like searchfile:name and sendmefile:name , do your really think the EU can forbid us the msn connections ?
>>What is an example of such need? Web-based interfaces >>generally don't need that kind of multi-threading.

check out the playstation2 from sony, there you have the 128bit cpu, wonder what does the pc market take so long here are the ps2 specs (a bit long but still):

php might be a simple scripting language easy to use but,
just wanted to point out: 1) php has no real threading support e.g. other than
simple webscripts are impossible to create 2) using whatever wierd forking in your php scripts still leaves you without shared variables and so on. 3) php has still very slow interface to shared memory (shmop), which makes it even more pointless to use in real enterprise applications even for web 4) even the new php-s oop structure is still out of date when compared to java or c++ or even perl (where are protected variables and callbacks? why does the php still not have a normal automatic class searching system and still relies on user own written inclusion lines? etc.) 5) php developers are heartlessy disgarding every kind of backward compatibility with every new minor version they write, e.g. your old scripts which worked finely for 4-5 months may be buggy without you even knowing it after 1 mysterious update.
just wanted to make this statement. php has still a long way to go to make it to the real enterprise market where perl and java are already ready. the new version of php doesn't include any major necessary components to achieve the raise to real enterprise developement market.
still hope they will make the jump to real applications cause the idea of php is quite good. only the implementation needs be improved. php6 maybe ?
recently some devices came out which also work as burners not only players when attached to your pc. but i wouldn't recommend them cause the writing hardware could easilly be damaged while jumping around with the player...

just as time goes by people get used to noises which doesn't let them sleep. for example atm. my gf is using her cellphone to wake us both... it doesn't wake me after a few months at all, now my gf will have to bring some little 'wrestlingmoves' in to wake me up.
i am no "strong" sleeper, i wake up even if the wind blows too hard and my balchony door cracks a bit. but when i hear noises that i'm used to, it has no effect whatsoever.

is just enough, make it run linux (i prefer debian)
...
or freebsd thingy....
(i like debian cause i don't need the sci-fi moments
that the commercial distributions have added, apt-get
is handy too.)
samba/squid/apache should run of them 'out-of-the-box'
so
that's my advice.
[ps. if u can, avoid running the machine with less than
128 megs of ram, it will save you from swapping often etc.]
if u must server dynamic content from your webpages,
choose perl or php (java and python are a bit more
heavy weight) and mysql or postgres.
when i was admin, i patched the machines as often as i could
:)
cause it was fun.
do the same and you'll be safe
