haven't you ever heard of conservation of energy or entropy? Everytime the phone rings, some energy would be used and some of the might be regained, but not all of it, so rining the phone occaisonally would just be a waste because you wouldn't get all of the energy from each ring back.
Now go sit in the corner and think about what you are about to say before it comes out of your mouth.
On cinder blocks? Are you a redneck, do you live in the sticks? Where I come from both of those names refer to cars which are still running fine. Maybe the poster should pull his Nike out of his mouth and think before he types next time without trying to sound cool.
this is almost exactly how auto-mechanics are paid. They get credited for what services they perform throught the day, which have a set value for each service. Hence, if it takes one guy all day to rotate and balance some tires, he only gets paid the amount set for that job.
it's more likely that no one wins cases like that against aerospace companies, since most require clearance levels. Being treated for depression is one sure way NOT to be able to get any clearance level.
I love the instant paranoia that most/. users seem to have, it's always someone bowing to pressure from some organization. Did you every consider that maybe, just maybe, they are just sick of the bandwith that is being wasted. Consider that most Cable ISPs only provide 40KB/s upload speeds, they are probably hinting at something. Also, consider all the support costs for people acting as a server and then calling in a complaining about the service being "slow", because they are not aware that while they are downloading they also have to upload while still requesting more information.
I would have to digress, I checked my watch many times, starting when Frodo and Sam were taken into Gondor by Faramir. I am still at a loss as to how that portion of the movie came about, it portrays Faramir as a week power hungry human almost identical to his brother, which is quite the opposite of the book. Second, in that scene of mysterious origins, why is it that Frodo almost gives up the ring to the Nazgul? Frodo was supposed to be strong willed, but they have been undercutting his character starting in FoTR with the river scene.
Cult: (n) a small, unpopular group of zealots, often having no recognition by government officials, very often attacked by law enforcement officials (see Waco)
Religion: (n) a large, popular group of zelots, often recognized by government organizations, and wrought with corruption and people who don't believe as strongly as the zealots of the religion.
They were not convicted of HAVING a monopoly, which I really shouldn't have to remind you as about 100+ other people already have said so in this discussion alone, they were convited of abusing their monopoly powers. Think before you post, it might make for a slightly intelectual conversation.
You also seem to think that these "judges" (which I assume you are refering to the multiple different judges which have ruled over the different stages of the procedings) were biased towards MS, did you forget about our lovely Judge Jackson who went into the courtroom with his bias and opinions already set that MS was guilty of abusing their monoply powers? Did you just conveniently forget about the transgression him and his peers have made in relation to this case?
I guess you are not OK with a monopoly. If you are the zealot you apear to be then you really should think twice, as you should hate your electric, phone, water, sewage, and cable companies, as they are ALL monoplies, and legal ones at that.
Not true, if you buy a Retail copy of windows you do get technical support. OEM copies are another story, and are sold at a lower price because they come with no support from Microsoft, support that is supposed to be provided by the OEM.
The difference between the $45 price and the $300 price is what economists call "monopoly rents".
Sure, if you say so. Tell me, do you think a single license of Adobe acrobat actually costs anything near $250, or Adobe GoLive6 at $399,InDesign at $699, or PhotoShop7 at $999? I'll move off of Adobe, do you think it acutally costs cisco $84 for a console cable (yes, they charge that much!), or $5000+ for a 3600 series 4 slot router, and that price is without ANY serial interface cards. The point is, just because the price is higher than what it costs them to make a profit, it is not neccesarily a "monopoly rent" , ohh, and BTW another point most of you/. heads have a habit of missing, monopoly power is NOT illegal, the misuse of it is. Maybe if you guys had gone passed your High School economics or Intro Economics classes in college you would realize that this is NOT a perfect world, consumers are not perfectly aware, and that there are natural inefeciencies that exist.
they lose money in every business area except Windows (86% profit) and Office (79% profit).
On another point, in the business world this is known as a Cash Cow, or a project which reaps in lots of money and is used to fund other less profitable business ventures. Without projects such as Windows and Office, things such as the Xbox would never have existed, and if they did would have cost many times more for the consumer to purchase. Also consider all of the other R&D microsoft has conducted over time (i.e. GUI design, Ergonomics), where do you think that money comes from? Do you people actually think that each project has its own allocation of funds that only comes from the profits they individually generate? If that was so then no general research into ideas which are not imediately destined for profit would ever occur.
I'm guessing you haven't driven a decent american car made after 1980. The current generation mustangs, especially the Bullit and Cobra's handle like a champ, this is comming from a person who HATES mustangs. I drive a ARE Prepped WS6 Firebird, that car outhandles almost any import you can get stock for stock. I have made people who say american cars suck and love imports shit themselves with what I can make that car do factory stock. Possibly you should stop comparing Geo Metros and Neons to the top of the line imports, you might actually see a fair comparison.
I was reading through this article and picked up on a few things. First of he refers to corporations as persons, this is not true, they are not considered natural persons, only citizens. Thus they do not have protection of the 5th amendment (right to not incrimenate ones self). Read the laws carefuly, if it says persons it means real people, if it says citizens they mean everyone that is a legal citizen of the US. Also this would not neccesarily be the place for federal regulation. The federal government only has juisprudence over interstate commerce (because of the interstate commerce clause), so they could technically only apply regulation to corporations which operate accross state borders, but then the question would be what gives the federal government the power to force a state to revoke a license (or permit) that they offered. This is not a simple issue, the next issue that would have to be resolved is, what is preventing the founders/owners of the "killed" corporation from simply re-incorporating. Rembember that you do not have to incorporate in the state that you conduct your primary business withing. This is not a simple "cut and dry" issue and may be one where punitive damages are the most effective ones. Remember, just because there is a problem doesn't mean we need legistlation to fix it.
How about an XBOX 360 with an internal HD-DVD drive instead?

wahoo... my first fisrt!
I believe the theory is called the Laffer curve

Let me try that again for him:
Cult: (n) a small, unpopular group of zealots, often having no recognition by government officials, very often attacked by law enforcement officials (see Waco)
Religion: (n) a large, popular group of zelots, often recognized by government organizations, and wrought with corruption and people who don't believe as strongly as the zealots of the religion.
FYI: The term for this is "dumping" , its something the US steel industry (among others) likes to complain foreign competitors are doing.
/me smacks another /.er around for a bit.
