My god, who can even read the article, that website is such a piece of utter shit. The article is divided up into 10 pages with only a couple of paragraphs on each page and a ton of flashing adverts.
Every time Microsoft releasesa a new version of it's operating system, going all the way back to the days of DOS, they have bundeled more and more utilities with the OS and various "experts" have proclaimed that Microsoft is going to put 3rd party vendors out of business.
But it never happens.
Windows comes with all sorts of programs -- web browser, media player, text editor, CD burning, disk defragger, paint program, etc., etc. and yet there is no shortage of people producing their own competing products. In fact there are probably more good quality choices available today than 10 years ago.
I doubt that Vista will put a serious dent in the anti-malware business.
"TV.com is free to use, and you can edit most of the information as if it was a wiki."
Not entirely true. All editing has to be approved by moderators who seem to reject everything. I've submitted numerous things to correct articles that are poorly written and/or just plain wrong, and they've all been rejected.
While going through some old magazines, I came across a copy of "Modern Recording" from early 1981.
24 years ago, the recording industry was making the same exact claims that they are making today -- they are losing huge amounts of money due to "piracy". Back in those days, personal computers and the Internet were almost non-existant. CDs didn't exist and the main form of recorded music was the vinyl LP. According to the RIAA back then, the villain was cassette tape recorders. People were borrowing their friends albums and recording them onto cassettes instead of buying their own copy.
So, the RIAA commissioned a study that they hoped to take to Congress as proof that they needed tougher laws to deal with this terrible problem. But a funny thing happened. Their study showed that people who had a good quality cassette deck in their stereo sysytem bought nearly twice as many albums as people who didn't.
"the ultimate solution is neither, i.e. absolutely free code... with no required assignments of credit... no required delivery of source code... no strings whatsoever... once you put your code out there then anyone can do anything with it."
Hooray for common sense. It's about time somebody said this.
Recently there has been much debate and discussion around the GPL due to the the work being done on GPL v3. And it's all a load of crap. Why is the GPL so complicated? Seriously. There are these constant arguments and debates that go on forever --
what you can/can't do when using GPL code.
what you have to/don't have to do when using GPL code.
what about this situation.
what about that situation.
The same arguments and debates, over and over and over again. Why? Because the GPL is as complicated and restrictive as a Microsoft EULA. It's just complicated and restirctive in a different way. If all the advocates of "Free" (as in Freedom) software truly believed in "Freedom", then they would throw the GPL in the trash (along with BSD and all the other licenses) and endorse a license containing exactly two sentences:
You can do whatever you want with this software.
You can't take any action against someone else for the purpose of preventing them from doing whatever they want with this software.
THAT is free software. Anything else is just phoney bullshit pretending to be free.
A few years ago, various friends and family members bought their first computers. Pretty soon, I was getting a steady steam of hoax e-mails from them.
Over and over again I tried to explain to them that this stuff wasn't true. Bill Gates is NOT testing an e-mail tracking program and Microsoft will NOT send you any money if you forward this e-mail to all your friends. Congress is NOT about to impose a tax on e-mail.
I pointed them to the various websites that specialize in debunking urban legends and internet hoaxes. But it didn't work. They just took me off their mailing lists and kept on going. For some reason, people desperately want to believe stupid crap.
" You can always take a floppy disk with the BIOS info on it and make it into an image to make a bootable CD with it. "
This is true but irrelevant. It's not about what media you used -- floppy, CD, whatever.
The real issue is -- why do you have to shut down your computer and then boot some antiquated operating system from some media other than your hard drive, just so you can flash the BIOS.
* You must have a HotMail account. Create a new HotMail account if you don't already have one, then go to www.HotMail.com and sign in to your HotMail account. Make sure you are signed in before proceeding."
If you do not speak English, how can you understand these directions?
A "virtual hard drive" is worthless because:
1 - most Internet Service Providers severely cripple your upload speed, so getting large amounts of data to the virtual hard drive is impractical
B - If yuo share you files with too many people, i.e. use too much bandwidth, they'll surely shut you down.
Is the guy from the Phantom console scam?

Screw them.

Install Sony DRM protected CD
Re-Name your favorite CD ripping program to $SYS$filename.exe
Now your CD ripper is hidden from Sony's DRM
It can also be used to hide cheat programs from various games.
Let's start a business that publicizes the terrabytes of warez on Usenet. Yeah, that's a real smart move.
"this domain is now the 'property' of a domain squatter selling google adds on my hard earned search engine status."
HA!!
If your domain was so important you would have paid attention and not let it expire.
I agree that TV.com sucks and isn't nearly as useful as the old TV Tome, but what's with the stupid name?
TV IV? What the heck is that? TV 4? TV Eye Vee?

"in areas where electricity is really not an option."
...? because theylack the basic intelligence necessary to do something that others have been doing for more than 100 years?
Not an option because
In Soviet Korea, CSS beta testing is only for old people.
"Yahoo hired dozens of top engineers, including Larry Tesler, former vice-president at Amazon.com."
Since when is a vice-president an engineer? Hiring away someone else's pointy-haired-boss does not create a "brain drain".

Sound familiar?
"Massive CEO Mitchell Davis says ...."
Massive CEO?
If everyone in the world changes to Firefox, the financial loss by Microsoft = $0.
and the financial gain by Mozilla = $0.
Whoopee
" Well, he got beamed up.
That's terribly sad. Now, after reading the Half-Blood Prince, I feel sad all over."
Oh no! Scotty was The Half-Blood Prince?? Damn that J.K.Rowling!
>>"My only question is, what's up with the Friday slots? Aren't those slots where shows usually die?"
Since VCRs have existed for 20 years now, I don't see how a shows time-slot even matters any more.
Why would I want to "watch TV" on my computer?
In my living room, I have a very nice 32 inch TV and some comfortable chairs. Why would I want to watch TV sitting at a computer desk?
This is another "pet rock". Just another way to separate money from morons.

Just because he was in "The Matrix" with Tom Cruise, now he thinks he knows about the Internet and stuff?

"The Electric Universe theory is not creationist"
True. The people ranting about "The Electric Universe theory" are a different type of crackpot.
