Friend of mine and I do Geocaching a lot. We had placed a cache in a field directly north of the Sacramento International Airport. This particular cache was not on the airport property at all.
Some other Geocachers went to find it post 9/11 and found the Sacramento County Sheriff department all OVER them & the cache. Before 9/11, nobody thought about it, but post 9/11, the paranoia had kicked in.
We decided that it would be best to retire that particular cache.:|
There's one not too far from my work in Santa Clara, CA. Right in the middle of the Silicon Valley, an A&W. Fry's is right down the street. I go there at least once a week and the place is usually steadily busy. That's always a good sign.;)
There's a new looking A&W behind the KFC! I LOVE A&W!
If they screwed around with A&W, there would be hell to pay.
PETA sets up this little booth near the Embarcadero BART station in San Francisco, and they try to hand out "Go Veg!" DVDs with their FUD on it. Even in SF, people just ignore them like the nutjobs that most of them are.
And no, it doesn't work. You wander right into the grey area of the courts saying "What is spam" - and since SPEWS and MAPS will list entire netblocks because some moron subscribes to newsletters and can't figure out the "unsubscribe" feature, I'd be wasting my time AND money. Then when the suit gets thrown out, I'd be liable for their legal fees as well.
It's just not financially viable.
MAPS sucks. SPEWS sucks. Nobody should bother using them, unless they're the "it's MY server, *I* will decide what I want!" types that are running a little Red Hat box at home. For business? SPEWS/etc are a horrible idea. I stopped using them years ago and haven't looked back.
You're missing the point. It's not always an option to just "find another ISP." It costs money. There are contracts involved. Downtime involved to move servers. DNS changes. These are issues that can affect business.
Often times your IP space isn't assigned until you move in, and if SPEWS decides to block your whole colo a few months down the line, what's a person to do? It's really not feasable to just have to pack up and move because of fucking SPEWS. That's just ridiculous.
Look around the Bay Area here - Hurricane Electric is in SPEWS. ServePath is in SPEWS. 365 Main is in SPEWS.
Practically *every colo provider in the area* is in SPEWS or MAPS! It's NOT just a matter of "go find another one."
Also, you can't just ask for a refund. Chances are, you've signed yourself into a contract and you cannot just bow out of it because your IP block is listed in SPEWS. That's a great way to get yourself sued for breach of contract. Gotta love our legal system.
Scratch MAPS and SPEWS. Spews lists the entire/20 that my/27 lurks in because of *one host* that never sent out ANY email at all (the A record points to a host that was accused of spamming, but curiously the only Google result is for the domain itself. Nothing in net-abuse at all.hmmm..) and there is no mechanism for removal. Fortunately, I can smarthost my mail through a partner ISP, but still...
MAPS & SPEWS both have a very bad track record, IMO. The "blow up the house to kill the roaches" of "Hey, a/32 was accused of spamming. Let's blackhole the whole/18 that it's in! approach is really *not* the way to do things.
Also, I worked for a company that's on the Spamhaus ROKSO list now. I have offered to give them up to date information since most of what they have is simply out of date, but they seem to have no interest in having correct information whatsoever. If they don't want to keep the ROKSO list up to date, what good is Spamhaus? Why bother?
SpamAssassin with the SURBL setup dings more spam than the whole collection of RBLs ever have.

That's from bash.org. It's pretty much how it goes. I ask friends that have more disposable income and they tell me about products they've blown money on. heh. It's another reason that I chose Sirius over XM for my satellite radio - finding an objective review online was a waste of time because everyone was just spewing the same marketing drivel or Google results were flooded with e-stores. I just spent some time and talked to people I knew about both products and went from there.
The Internet is becoming increasingly *useless* for information that doesn't come straight out of some marketing droid.
GTC = Government Technology Conference, held around this time in Sacramento, CA.
Chances are, they're showcasing 10.4 to Government buyers. This is not uncommon, actually. I saw the iMac at the GTC expo months before the unit was available to the public. At that time, it was 1 of only 7 completed iMacs - Apple was more than happy to showcase it to the Government & Educational buyers.
Heck, Apple was showing 10.4 at booths at Macworld - why not? "Look what you can look forward to!";)
The "rumour sites" have been saying that the recent build was going to be the GM... aaaaaand... WWDC *is* coming up. (June 6-10) AND Steve Jobs did say something about it being ready during the first half of 2005.
Coincidence? Maybe.:P Someone jumping the gun a bit and showing off 10.4 when they're probably not supposed to? Likely.;)
I was in Seattle and picked up a girlfriend of mine for a trip to Vancouver, BC to visit some people. She's from Denmark and only had her Danish passport. I'm American and had my US Passport & California drivers license with me.
She got into Canada with no problems. Me, on the other hand.. they gave me the third degree! They asked names & phone numbers & addresses of the people that I'd be staying with, and also made me prove that I had $100/day for expenses available to me. I have no idea where they got the $100/day figure, but they were adamant about it.
She spent about 2 minutes at Customs, where I was held up for almost an hour. All we were going to do was visit some school friends at a restaurant in BC. I sure as hell didn't expect the Canadian Inquisition....
I had a 6 month contract there, and let me tell you, finding that the budget had been cut really sucked, especially when you find out that as a result of the budget cuts, you're down to 1 ply toilet paper.... and it says "One sheet per employee" on each TP square.
*shrug* You don't have to trust it, but it'd be nice if you'd at listen to it.
I'm not trying to tell Spamhaus that they're wrong and someone is innocent. I'm trying to tell them that some of the information they have about someone on their ROKSO list is very outdated. How do I know this? I worked for the organization that is *on* the ROKSO list and believe me, I have NO love for them at all.
I tried to contact Spamhaus about one of their ROKSO listings. I've been trying to give them *correct* and *up to date* information that they do not have on file, but I cannot seem to get anyone to respond to me.
If people are going to use SPEWS/Spamhaus/etc to dunk spammers, shouldn't the RBL maintainers take some responsibility to make sure that the information is accurate?
Lawsuits are one thing, but making sure you're nailing the *right* people is another thing.
He lived in the state of TN... what were his taxes like there? Doesn't New York hit you for only a certain percentage? The article made it sound like his entire income was taxable. is it taxable in both states? That would royally suck and would certainly scare me off of doing any interstate telecommuting gigs. Yikes.
This is kind of like Washington going after people that go across to Oregon to shop. (Or people that live in one state and cross the river to work in the other) - can't have teh cake and eat it too.
We had neighbors before that had a young child (under 5) and he was not allowed to have *any* "violent" toys, like toy guns, video games, etc. Everything was to be educational and non-violent.
This little turkey was probably the most violent little kid I've ever seen. He simply found other ways to express his anger, like breaking flower pots. No violent toys or games and he was still a little demon. TV wasn't even a factor. This was when I lived in Japan - the neighbors didn't even have a television.
I grew up with TV. I grew up without any close friends or a tight knit "community" in my area. I used to go out in the yard and set GI Joe & Cobra on fire. I tried to make homemade napalm to use on said GI Joe figures when I was a child. I learned that from books in the library. Have I ever gone on a rampage? Nope. Shot anyone? Nope. Beaten up hookers? Nope.
See, my dad took an active role and did his best to explain the difference between right and wrong. On paper, I should be a complete loose cannon, but in reality, I'm not.:-)

If he gets 9yrs in the pokey, hopefully other spammers will sit back and say "oh, uh.. maybe I should find another revenue source.."
Maybe not, though, because to a lot of spammers, anything you didn't opt out of meant that you opted in. Bastards.

My IP blocks are in SPEWS simply because they don't like the colo provider that I use. (They also run a managed server space, a la Rackspace)
If I mailed you (or any of the domain users that I host) mailed you, it'd get dinged by SPEWS. Definitely a false positive.
(Fortunately, I smarthost mail through a partner ISP)
SPEWS really does have a lot of false positives - you just might notice them yet.

I said before it was *available* to the public. They were demonstrating it to a Government audience.

There's a theatre chain around here (Century Theatres, actually) that proudly states "No Commercials!" before movies.
They *used* to have the ads, but people complained about them.
It has? I'm still getting hit with pop-unders..

Remember "Flash Mobs?" They were all the rage about a year ago, and now you hear nothing about them at all.
It was another flash in the pan fad that came & went. Nobody should really be surprised by this at all.

My apartment already looks like this. My electric bill is about $700/mo. The neighbors complain about brownouts, and the insane fan noise scares away the women.
