[By all means correct me if i'm wrong on any of this...]

Well if i'm not mistaken, didn't an earlier /. story, or possibly a story somewhere else, quote that the Indian government was embracing Linux because of ability to access some portion of the networking code that they couldn't access in windows because of its closed nature?

Appears to be just another Salvo in Operation Vindaloo (tm) (Bills wooing away of Indian developers from non MS projects...or attempt at any rate). First he donates a massive amount of money to fight AIDS while at the same time offering to give away windows (or was that sell at a reduced cost). Now, its sharing source code. Anyone want to place bets on what hes going to do next?

    3) It would probably be best if you stuck with the Outlook client (unless you just have to switch), so get Exmerge and export everyones mailbox to PST files and give to them. Those will become the default delivery point (in Outlook) for incomming email.

I'm not sure how you'd handle passwords, etc, unless theres some way you can authenticate against NT (or whatever MS OS you are using).

  10. Whither OS? on Microsoft And The GPL/LGPL · · Score: 1

While this is an interesting development, i'm sure its not really a big surprise to the OS community at large. Assuming this attempt by MS to freeze OS out of the picture succeeds, what then of linux?

I've been tinkering with linux for approximately 8+ years, nothing major. I've always been of the mind that linux has, with some notable exceptions (Apache for one), been playing catch up with MS. Whenever a new feature is released in Windows, OS follows not far behind with an implementation. It appears, at times that MS's progress is driving OS's progress. I'm not saying this is wrong, after all, what other way is there to stay compatible? However, once frozen out, will OS be able to keep linux as robust and dynamic as it has been? Of course there will be those that ignore the license all together and do their own thing, but we cant all do that. As others have pointed out, legal disputes are costly and MS has effectively bottomless coffers.

I'm interested in hearing any comments on this. I'm not looking to be flamed so if you are gearing, safe the butane.

    Thanks,

Certainly it could have an impact. MS has got to be one of the most powerful corporate entities on the planet. When MS has a bad day so does the stock market (theres something very wrong that this is the case). Now imagine this monster of a company, goes to some folks at capital hill and says, if you don't invalidate this GPL thing we are going to have some really bad days. This is probably a bit sensationalist but in essence, if Microsoft were to throw its weight around, in this era of favorable political winds they could do some serious damage to the GPL. As others have pointed out, the GPL has yet to be tested in court. And even if the GPL wins out, MS has essentially bottomless pockets for their legal department.

I've read the thread so far regarding this legal action and the consequences will probably shock the lawyers that brought on this action.

The one thing they are trying to prevent (distribution of the DeCSS source code) is going to happen anyway, probably to a wider range of people than it would've orginally.

Another trend in this thread that i find amussing is the whining of some that the DeCSS folks are pirates. Does this mean that the Linux community is supposed to sit on its hands and wait for someone to decide that its time to support Linux with in their DVD products? I'm not a big time Linux Guru but I know that that isn't how Linux got where it is today. Furthermore, the software market is alive and well despite piracy, the Video Cassette market is alive and well, the Compact disk market is alive and well. So much for the rumors that DeCSS is going to kill the DVD market.

A suggestion to the DeCSS authors. While I know it doesn't sit well with the OpenSource philosopy, why not incorporate. Yeah, you'll have to distribute binaries for awhile but hey, at some point declare the source open and let the code go free.
