That kind of sloppiness is rare for the BBC, but typical for US media.
Here's a good example of a double-whammy courtesy of CNN

It's not more typical for U.S. media than for any other country's media.

Yes, the BBC is a very respected news source, probably moreso than CNN, but your statement is completely unfair to U.S. media in general.

The AP stylebook contains specific rules for naming cities, and it's not as simple as "City, State" in domestic cases and "City, Country" in international cases. This is why you'll see "CANCUN, Mexico" in one dateline and "MEXICO CITY" (rather than "MEXICO CITY, Mexico") in another. In the interest of conciseness, news outlets also have to consider their audience, and make certain assumptions about how the the reader will receive the information. But generally, most U.S. media follow AP style.

Out of curiosity, I did a search for "Quintana Roo" on the BBC Web site and found no uses in this context, so your criticism of CNN for that omission (compared to non-U.S. media) is unfair. And as you yourself stated, Quintana Roo is on the Yucatan Peninsula, making Cancun a Yucatan resort.

Sorry, but you're stretching. Yes, the BBC article could have done better to place Soudan, but the CNN article is fine (not that it's Shakespeare either).

  3. 15 minutes to render is bad on Firefox New York Times Ad, Soon · · Score: 1

I do preflight for a major national daily and I deal with ads like this every single day. It should not be taking them 15 minutes to make a minor change to text.

The largest ads I've worked with were glossy magazine ads above 300MB in size, but they were only that large because of high res photos that have nothing to do with editable text.

I have an idea why the text is taking so long to render but I won't state that assumption here.

I'll just say that any decent page layout program like Quark or InDesign should be able to handle the text without this absurd rendering time. Once the ad's in final form, send the postscript file through Distiller and you have a pdf ready to send to the NYT.

OK very interesting. You lost me when you started making up numbers from thin air, but anyway. I like the idea of agent smith representing the "real" humans' attempts at defeating the machines.

But I have another minor problem. Didn't neo take the same door every other "the one" took? That's how I saw it in the movie. Every video screen in the architect's room showed the same thing that neo was doing.

It's just too bad part 3 is gonna ruin the whole potential of the matrix story line. I originally thought it could bring it all out, but now after seeing this latest trailer I think it'll just be more of what part 1 was. An entertaining movie with cool special effects.

great idea though. If i had mod points I'd mod u up in spite of a few disagreements

If any of your favorite bands are on major labels, the chances are nearly nil that they will put mp3s on their sites.

The labels own the music -- the bands don't -- and they're too busy trying to make money off their controversial online music services to even think about offering anything for free elsewhere online.

  15. Re:Manual length and Macs vs. PC on Macintosh Clustering · · Score: 1

I just read the MCSR how-to and realized how easy it would be to setup a linux cluster and how skewed the original article was. I bet someone could easily write a Beowulf setup script that, along with a custom system installation script, could make Linux clustering a THREE step process.

#1: Install OS with custom auto-install script.

    #2: Run BW setup script.

#3: There is no step 3.

The only problem is that you'd have half a million Linux geeks screaming that your script automatically (and behind their backs!) gave their machines ips in the 192.168.x.x range instead of the 10.x.x.x range (or about something else conveniently handled by your script). You'd become the Microsoft of beowulf. Everyone would hate you and nobody would use your n00b scripts.

OK, that's a little bit facetious, but my point stands that on the whole, Mac-users WANT things done for them, while Linux users don't want anything done for them. Pooch-for-linux would never go anywhere and the comparison the original article makes is erroneous.
