My first lesson with an improperly configured Linux box outside the firewall was when my ISP called asking about some insane bandwidth use. What? I checked the box and it seemed fine. Found out the traffic was on FTP, which I was not using. Sure enough, tons of porn and other files were getting uploaded and downloaded... all the files in a hidden directory.
After filling out their lengthy survey (slim chance of being 1 of the 50 now that it's posted on/.) I can tell you why they do this. The "application" is basically a marketing survey. They'll get tens of thousands of these surveys completed, and it only cost them 50 devices.
It might actually be better if it used a standard but non-routable protocol. That would make it *much* more difficult for someone to 0wnz your PVR from the internet.
After all, how many of us are using routers to subdivide our home network??
Oh, I forgot this is/. Here's a better question: How many of us *need* to use routers to subdivide our home network?
I don't know if any of you remember my site but I was one of the original bloggers. Anyway, sometime in ~1996 Intel took notice of my site and decided to make me a "beta user" of their new web cam. They asked nothing in return, but it was obvious that they were hoping to get a mention on my page (it was pretty popular...about 5,000 readers at its peak...remember this was the mid-90's). So, what I'm saying is that this is nothing new.
I remember reading once that even if the moon were made of solid gold, any mining effort would still lose quite a bit of money due to tremendous launch/return costs that are between $7000 and $20000 per pound. Even if you brought a metric ton of gold back you'd be losing money.
The disparity grows even more when you start talking about mining asteroids.
If only we could think of a way to redirect one of those massive asteroids so it would come to us...we'd all be rich!
Actually, I've wanted something real similar to this for a long time. What I want is a Mouse, Keyboard, and video (which this doesn't have) in a laptop footprint. If I had one of these I could stop buying expensive KVMs and just plug one of these up to a machine when I needed a direct console. Not only that, but I wouldn't lose 10U to a Monitor/Keyboard in every rack (Yes, you can get a rack mountable LCD/Keyboard tray but you still need a KVM, and they are *expensive*).
the fact that Phil Zimmerman is behind a new commercial product that competes with original commercial version of PGP, perhaps. But the entire press release? Please! Why give them free advertising?
What makes you think it was free? Slashdot now accepts commercial ads written to look like the other stories. This started maybe a year ago?
Yes, they are probably fishing...throw a line out and see who will bite. I wonder what would happen if someone was completely uncooperative with them. Remember, *they* have the burden of proof. They have to have some evidence (like testimony) that you are running illegal software.
Oh wait, this is post-911. Is there still a burden of proof before someone is found guilty? I know trails and lawyers aren't necessary any more (see the Jose Padilla story).
I also thought this question was unanswerable, but the book I'm reading at the moment goes a long way to explaining how you can get life from non-life (and you have to understand that I am a skeptical thinker). There is no book I would more highly recommend to everyone in the audience: The Selfish Gene by Richard Dawkins.
If I had the ability to mod my own comments I would burn all 50 points in the hope that just one more person would read this book.
What I would really like to see is a house designed around a centralized heat reservoir. Dump the heat generated by your Fridge and your AC into a stack where your water heater, your over, and your Heater can pull from. Obviously you'd also want a heating element there, but the energy savings of recouping the heat from the other applicances would be significant.

But you kept the pr0n, right?
I've never used them, but this is pretty much the ultimate in hands off maintenance.

genius.iq is already taken?
It's that easy!
It's amazing the steps Apple will go to in order to get a 'switcher' ad from a celebrity.

Oh, I forgot this is
these are the passwords it tries : [empty], xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx, admin, Admin...
Whew! For a second there I thought it was trying xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
64 bits ought to be enough for anybody.
I can't imagine why you'd want to build a treehouse without a clear roof, but I've never heard of anyone doing it. Perhaps it's cost prohibitive...
Would be awesome during thunderstorms....especially if you happen to have a significant other in there with you.
Tommorrows headline on slashdot? If they are using that much bandwidth they must be pirating something.
:)
If you were a paying member of Slashdot, you'd know.

Free start-up business idea.....
Many of these components are clearly new. Look at the long wires on the resisters. These have never been on a circut board.

I'm pretty sure that the online pr0n industry is working on this.
The article is just a summary. If you want to know more check out: Hacking Web Solutions Exposed
alpha, beta, and now gamma... when's the stable release finally going to be out?
That would be 802.12. Odd number releases are never stable. Sheesh, how long have you been reading slashdot?
This explains why, when I view a book like The Selfish Gene (on evolutionary biology) Amazon gives me a recommendation like this:
People who bought The Selfish Gene also bought:
1. Clean Underwear from Target.
No, I am not kidding.

There have been other Slashdot stories on this topic, but this could be the last one.
I'm pretty sure there will be another one. Oh, it depends if you are drawing a distinction between 'postings' and 'stories'.
