  2. My experience on Software Dev Cycle As Part of CS Curriculum? · · Score: 1

What you are describing is offered at community colleges in Canada. I attended Seneca College's 3 Year Computer Programming and Analysis program. On the last year of the program, students are exposed to the creation of a real life project from start to finish. Teams of students must find a real life company that is willing to allow these students to launch this system within the company (companies willing to accept a free system that solves a business problem are not hard to find even if the system is built by students). The whole process is split into two semesters having the design of the system on the first semester and the implementation on the second. During both parts, students are supervised by instructors who monitor the process. The whole process follows "the book" as close as possible. This means students are exposed to things such as project proposals, cost analysis, requirement analysis, project specification documents, legal requirements, design exercises (full blown UML design, screenshots, prototypes), project management using tools such as MS Project, and the implementation of a relative complex system. Aside from that, students also exposed to team dynamics, learn how to deal with real life clients while sticking to a plan and schedule.

I personally found it to be a valuable experience which not only looked great on the resume while I was trying to get my first programming job, but also enriched the technical knowledge I had already gotten through other courses. I'm surprised there aren't many "recognized" programs that try to to close the gap between the theory of a CS degree and pure programming/systems programs such as my old college's. This is part of the reason why I'm now working towards my CS degree at University, in order to see the field from both sides. However, 6+ years of post-secondary education (undergrad) may be something that not everyone can/wants to do.

I wish the field had been this friendly a few years ago when I was looking for one. Case in point, I just got off a phone from an interview from our friends at the Bay area and they don't seem to be slowing down the hires. It seems to be increasing more than slowing down, considering that I'm don't particularly fit the type of profile I thought they would contact out of the blue..

Hopefully this new "bubble" doesn't burst in everyone's faces this time.

Linux is not going anywhere (at least not through MS's FUD spreading tactics) and Microsoft knows it. I've been trying to make sense out of this whole Microsoft/Novell deal and an article on ZDNet, in which they present Novel and Microsoft as painting a target over Red hat, got me thinking. What better way of getting rid of Linux on the server than to join forces with the rival of the biggest Linux company.

Once this flag carrier of Linux servers (RH) becomes irrelevant, you can, in the same but easier way, turn around and do the same to your once ally (Novell) technically killing off two your biggest enemies by pitting them against each other. Furthermore, it would not only put Linux on the server at a disadvantage but it would also make Linux lose credibility in the corporate environment which may trickle down to the already somewhat struggling (but with great potential) Linux on the desktop.

A lot of maybes and stretching of the imagination but my point is that MS did not join Novell to make friends with Linux, not that we ever thought otherwise around here ;)

Agreed. I used to be a long time Red Hat user but dropped it as soon as they stopped support for their desktop version. I moved to Suse and then Ubuntu (besides trying dozen of other dists and bsds). Although I had never used Linux as my primary desktop OS (it has however been my primary application server at work and home for years), thanks to Ubuntu's ability to take away the headache of spending countless hours fetching for obscure modules, compiling unsupported libraries, etc, in order to get my hardware or a piece of software working, I am now using Linux as my primary desktop OS and can't say I have much to complain about. Ubuntu just works (most of the time). Is it ready for my mom/dad/MySpace-sister? I don't think so IMO, but it is closer than ever and getting there fast.

Assuming you are using the XML approach as supposed to JSON, have you actually measured the load difference between the old page refresh and the new shiny Ajax requests? There is still http requests coming and going but now instead of the server simply spitting out html, the server has to spit out and parse gigantic XML datasets to update a simple table (assuming you were refering to an html table). In my experience, Ajax is counterproductive for most simple things and tends to increase the load of the server more often than not. Then again...it could be an implementation issue. ;)

Anyone else sick and tired of all this Ajax hype? I wonder how much damage is all this hype causing. Just a while ago my boss asked me to implement a simple one single text field and button form with Ajax because he wanted to make sure the submission was "responsive". After trying to persuade him otherwise and failing, it is needless to say, a simple project became a mess very quickly with very little benefit for the end user. Ajax has its place and usage, I think that's what these books should be focusing on rather than selling it as holy water.
