I really think you shouldn't have to use one of these, but it would solve your problem: Sendgrid, Mandril, or Amazon SES.

  2. Less False Positives on Tough Tests Flunk Good Programming Job Candidates · · Score: 4, Interesting

Sure this technique has tons of false negatives, but I think it has fewer false positives than many other interview techniques. False positives are a much bigger problem then false negatives when hiring.

  4. Games! on How Do I Talk To 4th Graders About IT? · · Score: 1

When I was a 4th grader in the 1980s my dad worked for HP. He was a middle manager. On our school's career day, he would bring a bunch of computers from work and set them up with games (moon lander, artillery, etc..). I don't remember any talk about careers or anything else, but I still remember playing the games and thinking that computers were cool. And voila, now I'm a programmer.

Obviously now-a-days most of those kids have computers at home and have games better than anything you have at your company, but I think the core thing to do is to give the kids something to have fun with that is vaguely related to where you work. Forget about the details of your individual job.

  6. Re:Vista video playback restrictions on High-Quality HD Content Can't Easily Be Played by Vista · · Score: 1

If you read that article closely, you'll note that the author forgets to mention some combinations and corrects himself in the comments:

"If you have DVI or HDMI without HDCP (ICT set or not), you don't get any video output. You must use an analog connection at this point. You can either use VGA or Component. Again, if ICT is not set, VGA will give you full resolution still (which is 1080p). Component will give you 1080i if ICT not set."

So, he is saying you can't get high quality digital output in some cases.

  7. Re:Wait... on High-Quality HD Content Can't Easily Be Played by Vista · · Score: 2

That's because the stuff you're downloading probably isn't WMV (HD) content. Like the article says, it doesn't degrade formats like X264 or DivX. So if you have people with HD recording equipment and they have some encoder that defaults to WMV (HD), they're gonna get stuff that doesn't play on their own system.

  9. Prius is a great car. on Hybrid/Electric Vehicles: Should I Buy? · · Score: 1

I bought one of the first Priuses when they first became available in the U.S. It is a great car. If you don't tell people it is a hybrid car before they drive it they never notice. From a standard car user point of view there is no difference between it and a normal car.

If you are some sort of car geek there may be issues with it, but take things like "no pickup at freeway speeds" with a grain of salt. Who cares? Can you drive it on the freeway? Of course. Can you pass, merge, drive up and down steep hills? Of course. Most of that stuff is like computer geeks who will talk your ears off for hours about the advantages of DDR RAM over conventional SDRAM. Of course there is a difference, but whichever you use, you can still write your email.

But there are some real differences between the Prius and a regular car. It costs half as much to operate than just about any other car from the gas savings (for me about $2000 a year). Also it produces 90% less polution than just about any other car. Those are real differences that really matter.

It would take new releases of the browsers. SSL lets you pick which encryption algorithm you wish to use. If the browsers just picked Diffie-Hellman, then there would be no issue. One good thing to keep in mind is that some of the other RSA algorithms expire in the next few years. This means that you'll no longer have to license this stuff from RSA.

Up to this point, I was reading anonymously because the defaults were fine with me and I figured it cut down on stressing the Slashdot machines. Now I have to stay logged in all the time because I want my threshhold at -1000.

Since I have to stay logged in, Rob could easily keep track of the my activities on Slashdot. While I trust that Rob doesn't really care and isn't really keeping track beyond my non-anonymous posts, I prefer systems which rely on trust as little as possible.

A technical solution might be the ability to add the threshold option to the URL so you can specify it without having an account.

As an aside, I think Rob should pick a Magic Number which just means no moderation at all instead of saying things like -1000. As soon as Rob hits 1000 moderators or changes the amount a moderator can change the score, -1000 may not work anymore.
