Not too familiar with the Fudge rules, but there is a "western"-like space faring rpg in various incarnations:
Classic Traveller at http://www.farfuture.net/ GURPS Traveller at http://www.sjgames.com/gurps/traveller/ d20 Traveller at http://www.travellerrpg.com/T20/
easy framework to mod and expand on; lot's of material, fan based and commerical. my fave is Classic, 'cause I already have the little black books. two d6 is all ya need for Classic!;)
3 cats courtesy of the wife.;) I did have a large tuxedo cat many moons ago. And we have a 15 gal mini reef tank (two months old). So we're starting to add coral (pink zoothenids (sp?) and a hammer coral) now.
PS Don't ever volunteer at the local animal shelter, or you'll end up with more pets than you can shake a stick at (third cat!).:D
>re-record the entire interview in real time to.WAV for computer editing.
Depends on the final use. The recordings could be for reference/quotes in developing the story rather than for production work (DAT is probably better for production).
A portable recorder, a stack of discs, a couple of AA's, and a mike could fit in one cargo pocket on them cargo pants. Filled up one disc? Pop in another. Fill up the static ram? No laptop? Depends on the application.
For the past year (6 mos?), long play encoding for minidiscs has been available. 4 hours on a 60 minute minidisc. Not too shabby! Check out http://minidisc.org/ for more info. as for minidisc being proprietary, what about MP3?;)
Sony is not the only source for minidisc recorders. sharp is another big supplier.
I agree with GroovBird. MiniDisc is a good solution in comparision to a book pc. Here in the states, a portable minidisc recorder will cost US$200 at the most. Plus you can easily erase and re-record. Finished recording the show? Take the whole kit into the car and away you go. try www.minidisco.org for pointers.
The purpose of minidisc is not to replace cds, but to record audio (not to store computer data) in a convenient format. they're meant to allow easy editing of tracks and easy re-recording (not unlike cassette tapes).
SCMS can be shut off in a pro MD deck, so digital copies can be made for the musician in all of us.;)
I second the rec on Brenthaven. My girlfriend has the 'urban backpack' model. It's very professional looking to boot. It carries a lot of stuff and a laptop (with the padded sleeve); it has withstood the rigors of travel and daily commuting via mass transit. I can't discern any wear nor tear after six months. It's not cheap, but it's quality. She chose the backback over the shoulder bag due to long hours of commuting.
As for me, I just picked up a laptop backback from Eastern Mountain Sports. I got tired of carry two bags for all my work (argh!). The nice feature of the EMS bag is that, in its padded sleeve, the laptop is strapped in the backback to help with shock adsorption. Plus, there's room for my binder, etc. EMS calls it the 'hard drive computer pack'.
Targus pales in comparision. they're okay for light duty.
Starflight. Wow. There's somebody else who played it. That was an addictive game. I still have the 5 1/4 floppies somewhere. All I need to do is find the durn wheel key... it's around here somewhere.
I spent hours planet hopping... Throw Nethack on top of that; and it's a wonder I got anything done at all.

Sure, MP3 is less proprietary?

Nothing is perfect, but ATRAC compression (used in minidisc recording) is now a mature technology compared to its intro in 1996.
;)
I've done live recordings with MD. sounds fine to me!
check out minidisc.org for more info.
oops! the main purpose is audio. data storage is a side issue, unless MD2 takes off. my bad!
