  1. Re:Just curious on Anxiety Disorders Discoverable by Blood Test · · Score: 1

I enjoy Coke, and I'm not having a problem...so why change?

Besides, I've found myself immersed in Doom and other games for hours on end, and I have no problem driving my motorhome for 8 or 9 hours in a day on trips (which definitely requires concentration, especially when I'm towing a car behind it). My problem is more of a lack of desire to concentrate at work rather than a lack of ability. :)

I believe that a lack of memory has more to do with not using it, not exercising it, rather than most causes people like to blame. Or, in the case of names, not actually hearing the name clearly the first time. I have no problems with my memory - I can remember names, phone numbers, credit card numbers, license plates, song lyrics, appointments, and plenty of other things without a problem... I think I do better than most people, actually.

My point was this - people are affected by drugs. Overdosing on a drug is usually going to produce some very noticeable effects. Taking a little bit of a drug probably won't produce those same side effects. Everything in moderation, in other words.

I always love that argument. And this quote is the first thing that hits me: "Water, taken in moderation, cannot hurt anyone."

Basically, you're saying that someone that is probably taking far too much caffeine is having negative effects. That's not really surprising. I have 29 ounces or less of Coke each day, and that's about all the caffeine I have (occasionally I'll have a chocolate candy bar or something, but that's rare I believe that's roughly the same amount of caffeine as a single cup of coffee, maybe slightly more.

I have no problems concentrating or with anxiety. My only problems with concentration usually come from external factors - the cat jumps on my lap, the phone rings, etc. Sure, I occasionally get nervous/anxious about things, but who doesn't? Some anxiety is normal.

I've seen people (not you) here ranting and raving about how caffeine is evil based on anecdotal evidence similar to what you presented. But the fact is that someone overdosed on any drug is likely to be experiencing side effects. We know what happens when people drink too much alcohol, so why would we think too much caffeine is any different?

So why does she gamble? Because she enjoys it. And she frequently wins enough to pay for her trips to Vegas and such.

How much do you spend on your hobbies every year? Gambling, at least for her, and probably for a lot of people, is just another hobby, and we all know that any hobby can be very expensive. I probably spend more money each year on my hobbies - with NO hope of financial return - then she spends on gambling.

Don't listen to PC World. The biggest advertisers get the best reviews.

Case in point: a few years back, Dell had ads all over their magazine, and won almost every review. I remember one particular comparison between a Dell and another brand - the second brand won the competition in just about every respect...but somehow the Dell got to be the PC World winner. Another example, when they do their annual "survey" of support quality, Dell was always a step above everyone else, and even when the support quality dropped, everyone just moved down a level and Dell was STILL the best; no one even equalled them. Yeah, right.

Then Dell cut back on their advertisements in PC World. That same month, whaddyaknow? Suddenly Gateway had the best machine for the first time in the 5 years I subscribed. I call BS on PC World's "reviews".

One more time: if no one has heard of you, then you won't sell many CDs at all!

My comment was directed at the fact that the radio stations are monopolized by the major labels - it's hard for an independent to get their song played. If they could get their song played, maybe they'd actually earn what they're worth.

Actually, I don't listen to the radio (well, the classic rock/oldies stations, but that's it).

My point was that without radio airtime, it's hard to get exposure, without exposure, it's hard to sell music/sell concert tickets.

No, the DC area. My car has 17,000 miles on it...and already there's something loose up front somewhere - a tie rod end or something.

I live about 1 mile from the Woodrow Wilson Bridge, which is a major construction project now (not Big Dig major, of course, but it's still got plenty of headaches). All of the roads near it, such as the Route 1 bridge over the beltway, are just trashed - potholes and bumps all over the place. Someday it'll all be fixed...but that day can't come soon enough, and in the mean time we have to pay all the extra money for replacing those parts on our cars.

(Before anyone asks - Metro isn't a good option for me - it would take over an hour one way, versus a 20 to 30 minute drive.)

You missed the point. I've heard of exactly ONE of those bands. Why? Because they don't get a lot of air time. That means the artists don't get a lot of money from royalties, and it means that relatively few people know about them so they make less money at concerts and song/CD sales (fewer purchasers).

While I see your point about the contract, I don't think it's as black-and-white as you've made it out to be. Based on what I've read, if I were a musician, I pretty much have to sign with the major labels to get any air time (and thus royalties) on radio. Sure, I might get a few stations here and there to play my song, but by and large you have to go through an independent promoter, which is expensive, which means signing with a major label.
