Yes. It sounds like some of the people in the article have a warped view of pets from working in the animal rescue area. They see the relatively small percentage of pets that have been mistreated and think that's the norm. Everyone I know with a pet (cats, dogs, birds, ferrets, fish) loves and treats the pets very well.
"Max, I think there's something wrong with the Cone of Silence!"
"Never mind that, 99, there's something wrong with the Cone of Silence!"
Okay, so that was actually from the Get Smart, Again movie. I always felt like that movie stayed pretty true to the Get Smart theme...unlike a certain other movie that was made with the Get Smart name.
The town I live in recently installed speed cameras for a couple school zones. They claim it's about safety, so I want to see the before- and after-camera statistics - how many pedestrians were saved from injury? Are incidents of other accidents on the rise? I suspect that information doesn't exist, though. (I got a ticket from one of them on a holiday. They're allowed to keep them on year-round, whether school is in session or not.)
If they really believe it's about safety, then they should prove it by donating any revenue above the cost of operation to a non-profit fund (perhaps for victims of accidents) or something similar.
I still remember performing a series of dark incantations in MS-DOS debug to initialize an MFM hard drive on an XT.
I don't think I ever had an MFM drive, but I did have an RLL drive I had to do similar things with (a Seagate ST-238R, 32 megs!). I remember a little cautionary jingle: "Oh what a mess we weave when we amiss interleave!" I remember being happy when we could use 1:1 interleave because our 286 was fast enough to deal with it... LOL.
It would be nice if the CEL had two levels of alert, one for minor issues such as an O2 sensor that, at worst, reduces engine efficiency, and major issues, such as a dead cylinder, regular misfire, or ECU problem.
The ones I'm familiar with do - if it's flashing, you have a serious problem that warrants immediate investigation. Usually this is caused by excessive misfires.
First, I've been wondering, what is the difference is between a "tip" and a "protip"?
On topic, though: kestasjk wasn't condescending at all. He or she was right on target. It's easy to sit on Slashdot and say what should be done. Much harder to actually accomplish something and do it. It's like writing a letter to the editor - it makes you feel like you've accomplished something, but precisely WHAT have you accomplished?
On the other hand, my 1.5 year old Macbook Pro does not have a Blu-Ray reader (let alone burner). I just checked their website and they still don't have it. I use my laptop for playing movies sometimes (usually digital copy, but not always), so being able to read a Blu-Ray disc would be nice. Don't get me wrong, I'm mostly happy with the laptop, but it just seems silly that even now Blu-Ray capability isn't included. Heck, I have a Blu-Ray drive installed and working in my Linux desktop machine.
The last time I bought a laptop, Apple was only supporting 802.11b, not g unlike other brands. I went with another brand that time.
Something similar happened to the mayor of Berwyn Heights, MD (near DC). Porch-pickup drugs spotted, SWAT team rolls in, they shoot his two dogs and hold him, his wife, and his mother for questioning for hours. The MAYOR of the town. The raid was conducted by county police; the city police chief was furious - no one had called him to let him know about the raid ahead of time, and he could have easily handled it by simply knocking on the door.
It was though the police had never heard of this method of delivering drugs (I hadn't, but I'm not in law enforcement or drugs, either). I wonder, if it happened to me, would they shoot my cat?
Perhaps Microsoft should investigate why people are still using XP and haven't upgraded. The new Linux distributions are much nicer in many ways (I've been using Linux since 1998 in the server, on the desktop, and sometimes the laptop), so people want to upgrade. Why don't people want to upgrade to 7?
Ever notice not everyone sends back their forms? Also, did you ever notice that there are lots of addresses that don't actually tell you where the house is ("RR 2 Box 3")? You clearly don't understand the complexities involved.
I love Udvar-Hazy. My wife and I had our first date there.:) But the Air Force Museum in Dayton, Ohio, and the Pima Air and Space Museum in Tucson, AZ are both must-sees too, if you haven't already and are interested in aircraft. If you haven't been to Dayton, imagine Udvar-Hazy 3 times larger... plus two additional hangars for Presidential and Experimental aircraft (Valkyrie, anyone?). Pima is huge and you can walk right up to the aircraft. They also give tours of the military boneyard next door. Air & Space, Air Force, and Pima are the three largest airplane museums in the country, and all three are very much worth visiting.
800,000 people in the US suddenly not working and not getting paychecks isn't a serious issue to you?
They're on unpaid leave, likely for a few weeks. I know this may come as a shock to a lot of slashdotters, but federal employees and contractors are substantially better paid than the national average. If they can't survive for a few weeks while Congress sorts this mess out, then they deserve it.
Also, your little statistic about "substantially better paid than the national average": stop drinking the Kool-Aid. It's only true if you ignore degrees and experience. I could earn more outside the government in my field; I choose not to because I love what I do and I enjoy knowing my work has a direct impact on the entire country.
Actually, I do get it, as a federal employee. And I can survive for months without income without a problem. That's not the point. I'll spell it out for you, using myself as an example: I'm planning to spend several thousand dollars expanding my driveway soon. If not for this issue, it probably would already be done, but I'm saving my money. That's a small negative effect on the economy. If we don't get back pay, well, that driveway expansion is going to be on hold even longer, along with the new vehicles we were planning to buy. Plenty of other federal employees are probably holding off on major purchases too for the same reason. Add up all of those small effects, the stock market gets scared (I'm sure it'll drop Monday if the government is closed), and suddenly our little road to economic recovery is delayed/sidetracked.
You conveniently left out that Obama tried to negotiate a budget and the Republicans decided to change their goal from $33 billion in cuts to $40 billion, just a few days ago. Note, I'm an independent, I hate both parties, but really the Tea Party Republicans are being idiots here...and at least some of the non-Tea Party Republicans seem to agree with that sentiment. It's called negotiating; what we instead have is "I'm taking my ball and going home!!"
Furthermore, it's all really idiotic, because that $40 billion or whatever in cuts doesn't apply to this year's budget only. It applies to this year and the next several years! The actual cuts in any given year are relatively small, but they multiply them out over several years to make the numbers look bigger so we're all impressed by how Congress is cracking the whip. And it's moot, since Congress passes a new budget every year (roughly), because next year they could change what's funded/cut anyway; there's nothing forcing them to uphold the cuts/spending made in a previous year.
In short, as usual, the politicians are lying. They could cut $1 out of this year's budget, the remainder out of the next 9 years, and all we'd hear is how they saved $40 billion.
The real truth of the matter is, the Democrats while in power refused to pass a budget for this fiscal year. Worse they refused to even submit one to the floor all because they were afraid of the ramifications of doing so before the election. In other words, if they had submitted their budget they would have had to campaign with that large deficit number hanging over their heads.
I note the new Congress has yet to pass a budget either. What's their excuse?
It's as if many people inquired at the police whether a given person was a known scam artist, and police would start telling new inquirers "we don't know, but sure as hell, a lot of people before you had the same question about the same guy". Which I'm pretty much sure they can't do. They may warn people about the guy if they have independently assessed that this guy is doing something fishy, but they can't badmouth anybody just on the basis of many people wondering...
Uh, in your example, they AREN'T badmouthing the guy. They are relying the fact that many people have asked the same question. How is that badmouthing him?

I've never needed it on my Macbook or my Linux machines, so I'm going to say "OS X" and "Linux."
Or use an OS that doesn't lock up.

In case you hadn't heard of this incident...it's not just planes any more. And they screened people who just GOT OFF the train.

Could I use it on spammers?

And this is good for our country?

Relaying, not relying. Sigh. Not awake yet apparently.

Cost? Every plane would require upgrades...all for the extremely unlikely event one is lost, over water, without a trace.
The AP article indicates that they are confident they can still read the recorders.
He was in an episode of Get Smart, too.
