When a major multi-national corporation distributes a book it crushes all competition and it is the end of print media.
This is compounded by the backing of a media powerhouse like a studio. First they make one movie and before you know it, they are making all of the movies and they control the world.
This move is a corruption of the OpenSource spirit and the sky is falling and the world is ending.
I *thought* anything Linux now runs under all of the *BSDs, unless I am wrong, there is no reason not to just use OpenBSD for any application you would use "secure" Linux.
Besides, *BSD even supports USB now for even more gadget connectivity.
You alarmists are really getting annoying, oops, that is your intention.
Please tell us, just how will Slashdot, or 2600, or Hackernews or Drudge or Lynn Samuels or ANYBODY else will be kept from voicing their views and having them seen, even if AOL merges with Time AND ExxonMobil AND ATT and just about anybody else they feel like merging with?
Whyle you are at it, why were you not brandishing this complaint towards Andover?
What is wrong with a basement business (like AOL began, like/. began, like HP began, like Apple began, like MS began, like Amazon began) becoming big?
The answer is at the top of this post, all you do is try to invent alarm and profit from said alarm.
The real story is that the last 2 *publicised* missions to Mars were shot down, along with dozens of secret missions from several terrestrial nations that have missile technology.
Just because we were able to land a few objects into Martian wilderness without incident means nothing, they got their defenses up and now we can not visit until an interplanitary war is fought and won!
Is everybody forgetting that all of those aircraft shot down in the Nantuckett Triangle happened when the flight plans were filed in time for the Martians to target the triangle and fire an intense energy weapon to destroy the aircraft?
If those idiots grant patents for mouse algorythims and windowing they will grant a patent for anything with a technical word in it.
No, they should not do this and in the case of DNA, that "first use" issue is definately against the "discoverer" since the person with the DNA is already using it.
But what the hell, the patent examiners don't pay attention to any of the other rules for granting patents, so it is another case that has to be needlessly settled in court.
Interview with A. C. Clark and others with the movie and books, answers all of these pesky anomalies. Part of it was that Clark did not want to send an 8 yr old computer into space but the director thought 8yrs old was a nice age of innocence, or some such hollywood crap.
"Colossis: The Forbin Project", equipment by Data General and Dr. Forbin could crush that wimp that built HAL too.
BTW, the only place I could find a copy of Colossis was at reel.com

Wrong...the cornerstone of anti-trust law is to protect the consumer from illegal competition amongst companies.
Wow, you really do not know what you are talking about and just want to sound smart, right? Don't answer.
Anti-trust is supposed to protect consumers from "illegal" collusion and promote (always legal) competition.
Now go back to your commune and fix your sandals.

For one thing, Sprint runs the actual data network for AOL from offices in Reston and Herndon, VA. AOL/Time do not "own" their network, they use the Sprint network, thus breaking the "sky is falling" seemless link between the customers' dialup and the content.
Another thing, AOL is one of the few remaining "big" ISPs that has expanded how one can connect to the rest of the 'net. Example: while others were killing telnet connectivity AOL added it. One can also, easily, use any browser they choose with their AOL connection. I use Netscape while on AOL and use outside news servers for unfiltered ('cep by me) usenet. BTW, I have seen little need to view any AOL content, I have a choice and I do not need Johnny to exercise it for me.
No, not cheering for AOL/Time, just pointing out a few facts. I am sure if AOL began restricting content choices they would swiftly cease being the largest ISP in the world, in much the same way their competitors lost customers with little things like killing telnet.
That would be very kewell, 'cept lots of courts in the US have a policy that us "street people" cannot bring anything electronic into the building (no kidding, DC, VA and to some extent TN are like that).
If CA, and this court "allow" for free live reporting it would be doubleplusgood!
Only speaking for USA judges (all levels), they really do not give a crap about anybody elses schedule or life, only their own. Expect more of this pontif-like behaviour to follow.
For those of you that want the government to be involved in every aspect of our lives, this is just a taste of what to expect in that world.
Some of our DC2600 members are starting up a free computer for underpriveleged organization. Looks like they are going with redhat too, but not sure.
The manual for Redhat can really come in handy to those new to this stuff.

Congratulations on your new deal!
Colossis, by Dr. Carl Forbin and Control Data, is much nore secure than HAL, since it has nuclear missiles and is not afraid to use them.
Also proof that the good old HDD will be with us even when the machines take over, instead of that fictional "holographic" memory HAL has.
Colossis kicks HALs butt every time!

These events are not the work of bacteria!
Yes, for NEW or ALTERED genes, but for existing natural genes pantenting is rubbish.

Just my umbrella to the falling sky.
Perhaps a demo like this for the clueless mainstream media that continue to report along the palintif party line?
Might not do much good, but certainly will not do any harm. Sounds like a job for Ted Koppell.

At least we have toothpaste, soap and hot water and WE use them all.
I read an article years ago that he was designing custom computer cases. Not sure what happened with that.
