  1. Because that's the current enemy du jour. Make no mistake, I don't want to see the Russians hacking into our systems and they should be secure. But the US has de-industrialized and given to China a huge amount of IP as well as physical assets so we didn't have to be bothered doing work for ourselves, including the manufacturing of most of our drugs. How can this end well? We have met the enemy, and he is us.

    Indeed. And this is also true with TV advertising, which has been around for a long time. So...isn't it up to the parents to freaking limit their kids' screen time?

    Exactly. OTOH despite decades of banning biological weapons development, the USSR engaged in a lot of research and building of them - despite the inspections etc. that were done by NATO teams. And yes, USSR teams inspected NATO as well.

    I agree things will continue to collapse, but the difference I see is that BOTH parties are gutting the health system. Obamacare was just another move to do it - the number of retirements of physicians has been enormous, because they can no longer make their expenses with declining medicare/medicaid reimbursement, and that was when Obama was still President. The frightening thing is that nobody really, really wants to believe that both major political parties in the US really are about 99.5% the same. And they are not on the side of the populace.

    You're hearing the meme that folks are spewing so that we become a socialist and/or a communist country (and YES, I DO know the difference between them, thanks). I grew up...extremely poor. Not *quite* dirt floor shack poor, but I could see it from where I grew up. Now? I'm comfortably middle class, maybe could do more, but I'm happy in my life. No, I didn't inherit money, I merely...worked.

    I don't know about that. It depends. If you have a lot of money in your 20s, likely yes, you were born to wealth. If you have a lot of money in your sixties it's more likely you saved money all your life.

    Mostly it depends on what area of the country where you live. If you live in Omaha, you can do quite well on 75K - and yes, it's not that hard with professional credentials to get a 75K job in Omaha. In the bay area, I'd say if you make 300K you're still merely middle class.

    Don't you folks ever hire anyone? Typically one pays by the hour for a tradesman unless he or she (mostly he) quotes you a "for the job" price. Even so if they f--- off they'll come back to you and say 'it took me longer than I thought it was going to, so here's the bill for the extra."

    I would too. E.g.: I need some tree work done. I pay through the nose for tree guys who .. have workmans comp. (The ones without are also legal as I know they were born in the US but I won't take the risk of getting sued by a workman who injures himself on my property.

  18. Interesting question, however. Would the "cost plus" model have meant research dollars would have gone into other things? Like, genuine research? An awful lot of what we call R&D today is merely application of things that AT&T and IBM came up with..in the 60s.

    I think you've hit the nail on the head. Why, in the 1960s "cloud" was called "Timesharing." What a concept!

  24. Those student activity fees aren't new. I was in college 25 years ago - and it was exactly the same then. And don't forget the PIRG fees which were enormous then. Higher ed is mostly just a cash cow on the backs of kids who, in most instances, don't know any better, and parents who worship at the school of Animal House.

    Sometimes it means you do not live in University housing but choose a school closer to where you grew up and commute to school. It also means you do not have to take the incredibly overpriced food plans at the university.
