Ok Anonymous Biologist, try reading up on what happens to rat populations when there is rampant overcrowding and the food supply starts running out.
Rats turn gay.
Makes perfect sense really. If there aren't enough resources available in a controlled population, nature should scale back reproduction. It does this by turning the rats into rump rangers. Of course it's only a percentage, but when rat populations get stressed, they get 'sssuper'.
So, you're saying that SuSE has become the Mandrake/Mandriva of the Linux world? I've had 2 SuSE installs (10.0) with completely broken package managers on fresh installs over the last few months. Granted this is the opensuse that you mention. I keep trying and it just won't work. I still think Mandriva is superior for the desktop but I wouldn't use it on servers.
If you didn't have such a high number you'd probably realize that moderation is impossible to one's own posts. Believe it or not Slashdot makes sure that people don't mod their own threads. And no, there's no conspiracy with other Slashdotters...I'm pretty much alone on this site and you can see by my post counts and moderation scores, I own you.
I guess you really don't have much to do today, and for that, I'm sorry, but at least you learned something.
When the trolls posted a worn out quote, I remained silent, after all I don't feed the trolls. When the moderators modded my post -1 flamebait I did not post a reply to my own thread, after all it would get modded down also. When a guy got thrown in jail for running a website I did not speak out, after all he knew it was illegal and he doesn't live in Sweden or Russia. When I posted an unfunny In Soviet Russia joke, nobody gave me a +1 funny.
Myself and even my parents are already clear on this subject. My mother has been working in hospitals her entire life as an RN, and for the last few years she has worked in hospice care. After all she has seen, so many people wasting away with no chance of revival and zero quality of life, she specifically told us that if it comes down to it, give her a month and pull the plug. I wholeheartedly agree. Not that I want to kill my mother, but that is her wish and she gave us the responsibility to handle the issue if it ever comes up. She doesn't want to be an enormous burden to anyone and values her independence and her life as she knows it.
Personally I believe the same thing. If I were in the same situation, I would want my family and my wife to make the same decision. There are limits to medical technology and you must accept those limitations. With current medical tech you can keep a person 'alive' for an indefinite period of time regardless of whether or not they will ever recover. However, the longer a person is comatose, the more remote their chances of ever recovering, and if they do recover, they will not be 100%. There's a sliding scale here that decreases over time.
People like yourself who may believe in miracles are probably in the minority. I think it's disgusting that Terry's parents selfishly kept her 'alive' because they refused to accept the truth and her fate. They just did not want to let go. Her husband had already come to grips with reality and wanted to get on with his life. I'm sure there was alot of grief on both sides of the fence and it is not an easy decision to be faced with. The biggest travesty was that the state and courts intervened. The last entity I want in control of my life is a knuckleheaded bureaucracy, and obviously my mother feels the same way.
Well anyway, the whole Shiavo case has been done to death and this thread is closed to me.:)
HAHAHAHAH...oh man...wait....HAHAHAHAHHA...I gotta climb back into my chair.
This isn't Star Trek, guys. You don't wave a magic piece of plastic over someone's head that has sustained massive head trauma and they wake up. I'm all for the future and wonderful medical science, but even if Terry had been somewhat repaired, she wouldn't wake up as Terry, so ultimately it's pointless.
Come on dude, if you're gonna troll, at least put a little effort into it. This is just plain bad, lazy trolling. I guess there's nothing interesting on Digg today huh?
I had no idea that Affirmative Action was being used in India of all places. This thread I started has turned out to be pretty informative after all.:)
Wow, you sure have a shiny opinion of India. The fact remains that the caste system is still in strong effect. On the way to the Microsoft campus in Hyderabad, you see people living in vinyl tents along the sidewalks. These people are the untouchables, nobody helps them or even looks at them. It's worse than the homeless here in the US, because at least there are hundreds (if not thousands) of nonprofits dedicated to feeding/bathing/caring for the homeless. If you're homeless in India, you are truly fucked. And about the only way to be homeless is to be born homeless, and thanks to the caste system you will stay that way until the day you meet your untimely demise. Another sad point is that during the tsunami that wrecked Southeast Asia, Sri Lanka, and India's coast, India denied any public information regarding the number of dead or missing. Why? Because everyone who lives on the beaches and coastlines in southern India where the tsunami hit is in the garbage caste. They were uncounted and the Indian government refused and barred assistance from any agency. That's pretty damn bad.
Education is lifting Indians up, but not Indians in the lowest part of the caste. The middle class is emerging along with the upper class. It's the opposite of what's happening in the US, where the congregational focus of wealth is just becoming more and more concentrated into a very thin sliver of the populous, eroding the middle class and widening the gulf between all classes. However, the US also maintains a caste system but it's based more on personal wealth and education than bloodline. Americans at least have opportunities to get ahead, even if the glass ceiling is dropping lower by the hour for the middle class. Minimum wage hasn't budged in over a decade and congress is holding it down by the throat. In fact, the current US minimum wage, after being adjusted for inflation, is the worst it's been since 1955. $5.15 today is the equivalent of only $3.95 in 1995 -- lower than the $4.25 minimum wage level before the 1996-97 increase.
I know how easy it is to sit back and point fingers and say 'well this country has these problems, they must be doing something wrong', so I provided the bit about the US in contrast to admit that yes, we all have our economic and social issues to deal with. Hope I enlightened someone today.:)
Personally I believe the punishment should fit the crime. If you viciously stab someone to death, someone should stab you to death. That's pretty fair. With the current death row population, any vicious criminals with murderous tendencies can carry out the death sentence and nobody will be traumatized from the experience (i.e. a voluntary executioner).
I realize my opinion isn't popular in this day and age of PC thinking, but a casual glance at prison populations (minus the majority which are little guys like weed smokers/dealers) shows that our current system just doesn't work. The original idea of capital punishment was to serve as a deterrent for serious crimes, and back in the days when the punishment was alot more brutal (firing squads, hangings) and alot more public, it was indeed a deterrent.
At the end of the day we as a society need to fix the broken parts of the system that produce murderous killers and other criminals.
You'd be surprised at how many low-numbered Slashdot users have wives and families. I guess, despite any social failings, if you stick around long enough, someone will settle for you.:)
Um, you shouldn't be saying "the RC releases". You should be saying 'this latest release' or RC2. Remember, there wasn't even supposed to be an RC2, Microsoft released it because RC1 was shit. Nearly everyone in the tech press was screaming and crying about everything wrong with it. Stability. Speed (or lack thereof). Compatibility. The list just went on and on. So, Microsoft fixed some more bugs and released, publicly, the RC2. This was more of a PR move than anything.
However, I will say that I'm downloading it now, and seeing if it's much better than RC1. I used RC1 for a little while and just like the press said, it sucked. Here's hoping that RC2 is improving and that I can actually find a reason besides DirectX10 that Vista is even a work in progress.
Actually I think linux distros should borrow the Mac approach to user security. You can have as many users as you want but in order to install/remove software, you have to enter the equivalent of a root password. It's pretty good about not letting generic users change things that have been locked, and the icons and sound effects reinforce the fact that things are locked or unlocked. Plus you have the keychain that can save all passwords...and you need a password to unlock it.
Konqueror does something similar (sometimes) but that's not system-wide enough for me. It sucks when you lose the key to the castle but hey, it's better than leaving the front gate unlocked and the moat empty.
Personally I don't have a problem with Federalism. I know it may have come across as sarcasm but as I said in my post, the Feds were wise to steer clear of this issue.
And be careful with your '18 year old women have their uses' statement. That's a fine line you walk, because 18 is just an arbitrary number that happens to be socially acceptable (for the most part) in the US, and one could easily say the same of younger women. 18 just happens to be the age that girls are considered to be 'mature' enough to deal with the responsibilities of sexual relationships...and from what I've seen, the age should probably be higher.
Yeah, uhm, I don't think there's a PS2 shortage. Yet.
Thanks Trout, I needed a complete and total diversion from anything relevant, and you heeded the call.
I vaguely remember the 5 civilized tribes from school, but I don't remember anything about Cheokees.

Ugh. I'll spare a very long and insightful post for the hundredth time on this subject by saying simply,
"STFU. Licensing issues. Buy ATI."

According to conventional wisdom about the brain, only about 10% is used on average, so replacing 98% would probably net you a drooling retard. ;)

Very few computers run well with smashed CPUs.

If the average IQ is 100, then wouldn't this fatass be average? And how could you be smarter than most people if most people are just as smart as you?
;)
God, this tub of lard is making my head hurt.

Actually we kill them to keep them out of the gene pool. That's fine with me.
It all depends on the user number doesn't it?
:)
