Imagine that. Using a hack (ndiswrapper) to load non-native Wifi drivers that are not ACPI-compliant like native drivers are causes problems with hibernation/sleep.
If you used something native or if the manufacturer supported linux you'd probably be OK. I've experienced this myself.
Rome kinda did to. Although...it's not really a world war when you just cruise through each country, pwning them and building nice new roads to each one.
I'm a PS3 owner that has had one since November 17th. No waiting in line on that day, just a nice preorder (5th place) so it was a stroll into the shop at 9am. Now for the gripes.
Here's what Sony needs to fix that I've uncovered so far.
1. Allow background downloading from the PS3 network. Every device known to man that's internet-enabled can do more than one thing at a time. There's no excuse for this. 2. Upscale my DVDs. I know, you want me to buy Blu-Ray discs, and I plan to, but meanwhile I have a whole library of titles that are constrained to the shitty 480p resolution. Why? Everyone and their dog makes upscaling DVD players nowadays. All I'm asking for is 720p. 3. Upscale my PS2 games. I don't want to play Final Fantasy XII or anything else in 480i or 480p, so why force me? Also can you do something about the fact that all the games look *worse* than the original PS2? 4. Fix the bluetooth controller issues. More than once I've been in a firefight in Resistance, only to have my dude stare at the ground and strafe hard left. Unacceptable. In NES parlance I'd call it a controller-thrower moment. 5. Is there even one good reason why every video I watch, be it Blu-Ray or DVD, needs to be letterboxed? Hello..there are like 80 lines missing from the top and the bottom of every movie. Widescreen video on widescreen set should not equal letterboxing. 6. Digital optical audio output. Why is this such a problem on the PS3? Sometimes I get no sound..most of the time I do. I was playing 2 player coop with my friend on Resistance..and one level had no sound except for a dude yelling commands/comments at us in game. The next level, the sound was back. WTF?
This is about all I can think of right now. Some should be easy fixes, others who knows.
I didn't think it was the straps that were breaking, but the crappy plastic tabs that were holding them into the controllers.
They should have play tested them alot more with American wiitards first. We seem to be the ones breaking the shit out of the controllers *cue youtube girl video*.
Dammit, can't you people read the entire post? Go back and read _everything_. I already mentioned the continuation of slavery or indentured servitude as an ongoing global phenomenon.
Thanks for this post, +1 insightful.:) It was my intent to get people *thinking* about the generic term 'slave' and the connotations it has taken on since its inclusion in the English language.
I'm going to assume by your name that you're coming from a Jewish background, and well, that was pretty late in the Egyptian empire's history, relatively speaking. Plus it happened after the Egyptians conquered Israel. That's how shit was back then..you got conquered, you got enslaved. The Romans and Greeks were both famous for setting this trend. Also, Jews kept slaves as well, and according to Bernard Lewis, "Jews were indeed required by rabbinic law to try to persuade their slaves to accept conversion with circumcision and ritual immersion. A form of semi-conversion, whereby the slave accepted some basic commandments and observances, but not the full rigor of the Mosaic law, was widely practiced. According to Jewish law, a converted or even semi-converted slave could not be sold to a Gentile." Ironic that you'd mention slavery and there's a precedent in Rabbinic law that covers it huh?
I see your point though. According to what I've read thus far, the Egyptians were real jerks to the Jewish slaves. Then again, if you're enslaved, what kind of treatment do you expect? Something to ponder.
Ultimately, the word 'slave' is way too generic. I just posted the parent to get people thinking that one word has a ton of meanings, and using it in different ways doesn't dilute it. Around 3300 years ago, a Jew slaving for an Egyptian was one kind of slave, while the Egyptian slaves washing laundry and cooking meals in the homes were another.
Ignorant fuck? Honestly, I expected more coming from an anonymous coward. I'm saying this from an American perspective, so yes, I use the term 'those people' in reference to imported African slaves, courtesy of the British slave trading companies.
By the way, next time you post a knee-jerk, reactionary post anonymously, please have the common sense to post OUTSIDE of the quote tag. Your post looks jacked up.
Yeah but those people have been dead for over 350 years, I think we can broaden the term. The computer industry never had a problem with the whole master/slave paradigm, even after threats of lawsuits.;) To be fair, slavery exists in one form of another all over the world, and in some places it's voluntary. Take Egypt for example. The majority of Egyptian slaves were proud to be working on the pyramids, generation after generation, and though it was back-breaking work, they got props for it and nobody spit on them. It took hundreds of years to build the pyramids, and unless you have thankful parties working with you, eventually you will run out of forced labor.
Morons don't build atomic bombos. Theres stuff on gaming that freshouts can't do. You absolutelly need a bunch of gurus. Imho. Yeah, when you want to build atomic bombos, you call in the Atomic Bombosman!
You think it's pricey to make games? I have to pay $699 for the console to play them! Wow, which console is that expensive? My premium PS3 came in way under 699.
Wow, that's a really insightful post on just how far out of whack Mexico's priorities are. Rather than providing a decent quality of life to prevent hundreds of thousands of their citizens from hopping fences and risking their lives to enter the US, Presidente Fox chooses to big El Telescopo Grande! What a bonus for Mexican citizens.
It really shocks me just how fucktarded comments are on Slashdot sometimes.
Illegal immigrants have cornered the market on all the low paying jobs. Minimum wage jobs, floor scrubbers, landscaping, low level construction, fast food, you name it.
These days high school kids are having trouble finding jobs (at least here in Texas) because there basically are none for unskilled young people. There was a time when you could graduate high school and work your way through college...but unfortunately that has changed. Now you have to get a full ride on a scholarship, student loans or wealthy parents to make it through.
Well if you are going to broadly define it, as the judge has in this case and how the law has outlined it, many things fall into that category.
"1. messages distributed by electronic means from one computer user to one or more recipients via a network 2. the system of sending messages by such electronic means"
You could call a Sidekick a computer, since it does alot more than just make phone calls, and the cellphone provider attaches it to a network..so under this definition, a text message from someone on a phone would count as 'email' and would fall under this law's jurisdiction.
Zooming out a little bit, any phone-to-phone, pc-to-phone or phone-to-pc text or IM message would match up with this law. Zooming out further and something as ancient as a teletype/telegraph transmission, unlikely though it might be, would also apply. It is electronic, it is sent from an electronic device over a network to another device, with the intent of delivering information to an end user.
An earlier poster quoted "'Transmit' means to send to a specific individual known by the defendant to be a minor via electronic mail." I have to take issue with the wording here, because it's disputable whether or not one could really 'know' someone online is a minor prior to meeting them, just like most people don't know the person on the other end of the heated cybersex chat is a bloated over-50 transvestite bus driver. There is a certain amount of assumption here but I wouldn't call it 'knowing' by any stretch. But, for the purpose of keeping molesters locked up (which is especially prevalent in Florida for some reason), I suppose the wording is 'good enough'.
I think this is another one of those 'just for the OEMs' stunts. Like if Abit wants to make a board with onboard video..well...you just drop one of these CPUs in and there you go. They can tier them as well, so the cheaper AMD64x2 3200+ will get the equivalent of a 7600 or other low-end chipset. However, I don't know how this will affect heat dissipation/generation. Seems like having the two hottest chips on the board integrated into the same die is kind of bad.
What you're seeing is bidders playing the waiting game. When there are lots of phony bidders with zero feedback sniping all the auctions at $5000 plus and killing the higher auctions, and a ton of systems for sale, you end up with extra patient buyers.
Just wait until about 5-7 days before Christmas. All these fence-sitters will descend upon the unsold PS3's like a locust swarm and drive the price into the stratosphere.
One thing that struck me as cool about this game was that when you change weapons, your character does also. If you equip an ice shield, you can see who has it and you know by looking at it what it is. One cool thing is equipping the bombs, whatever character carries it attaches it to their belt on the back left side and you can see the logo on it representing what type of bomb it is. It's this level of detail that is really different.
I, too, wish that if you put Golden Armor from head to toe on a character that he'll be all golden and shiny (and maybe even take damage and show that) but that detracts from the character recognition. How could you know if Vaan is in your party if he's covered head to toe in Golden Armor and 2 of your other characters are too? I guess someone could wear a cape but you get the point.
Yeah and the Mists are kinda worthless. They're usually a one-shot deal unless you possess some hidden knowledge of when to mash R2 and when to hit one of 4 controller buttons when it prompts you. I still haven't figured it out..sometimes I chain 4 or 5, sometimes I get 1 in and a Time's Up! Plus, it completely blows out all your MP which can be critical for Gambit-enabled healing during battles. There's nothing worse than being out of potions and MP at the end of a boss battle, though it does add excitement.
Personally I miss FFVII and FFX's summons. I *liked* seeing Ifrit throw flaming meatballs and rip up a gigantic chunk of the earth to hurl at a dangerous boss. I couldn't care less about their entrance, but the spell effects were *satisfying*. I can't say that about the Mists in FFXII. It just seems like some disconnected, mp-robbing eye candy and you never know until it's over how much damage was done (and consequently if it was worth the MP you just spent).
Overall I'm about 40 hours into the game and having a ball. The graphics are breathtaking although they would be better at 480p, they're good enough on my 32" LCD hdtv. Widescreen and Dolby Digital FTW!
Well, DRM is like any other anti-piracy technology. It's simply a deterrent for the masses.
Witness VCR tapes and macrovision. Months after its introduction, we had electronic devices that plugged in via RF or composite ports and stripped macrovision. Boom, instant copy, no video flutter. Soon, the DVD format with new protection was released.
Witness DVDs. It took a little longer, but eventually thanks to DVDJon and others, the protection was cracked. Anyone with MythTV, DVDShrink, DVDecrypter, etc. can now copy their movies. Soon, Blu-Ray and HD-DVD become prevalent.
Notice a pattern here? Once the masses get ahold of something, the companies start breaking a sweat and pushing for new standards. It's just like Napster..nobody cared until every single damn AOL user on the planet was on it. By then it had jumped the shark and was doomed anyway. Napster 2.0 never made it, but iTunes hit it big along with Allofmp3.
Don't worry, soon enough whatever wacky protection on the latest formats will be broken and they'll push for something new.
Yeah, I live in Dallas and know all about Mark Cuban's shenanigans. He's a dumbass with a truck load of money, and his NBA antics with the officials and refs are well publicized.

In my 12 hours or so of playing Resistance, I think it's happened 3 times. It always resolves itself but it sucks when it happens.
I'm a PS3 owner that has had one since November 17th. No waiting in line on that day, just a nice preorder (5th place) so it was a stroll into the shop at 9am. Now for the gripes.

The closer these things get to PC hardware, the more patches they'll need, pure and simple.

Again, the definition of slave is called into question.

That's cool, I'll just pretend I'm on Digg, with its 1981 Commodore 64 BBS-style threading.
Wait..sorry Commodore fans. I know it had better threading than Digg.
