I think the biggest roadblock is Linux itself. Linux needs to be able to handle multimedia out of the box, for almost any soundcard/network card/video card. Until this happens, what's the point of pushing Linux as a gaming OS? Don't put the cart before the horse..

I believe it was mentioned awhile back that Amiga was working on a multimedia layer that could be grafted to Linux systems. Whether or not this happened, it's still a good idea. With this MM layer, you could write truly hardware independent games, and the only user requirement would be that they have this layer installed.

Nvidia has good drivers now, starting with the 1541 series and currently with the 2314's. There are snags that newbies hit, but it has more to do with zero experience with linux than anything else.

I have had no trouble with 3d under the new drivers and mandrake 8.1. In fact, I help people daily with getting it setup. It's really not that hard and if I could code worth a shit I'd probably make a decent installer for it.

Matrox and ATI on the other hand, have crap for 3d drivers. The Radeon series is only a wack framebuffer driver that supports no 3d whatsoever. I don't know about the rest of their cards but who cares? Nobody has 3d support and framerates under linux like Nvidia. ATI and Matrox are helpful? Then where are the closed/open source Radeon 3d drivers? They don't exist. At least Nvidia cares enough to *make* drivers.

Next time someone recommends Nvidia, you can nod your head, knowing they're right.

Trolls and redundant/flame posts are not hard to mod down but an AC that posts something good is difficult to mod up at times.

This is admittedly offtopic yet somewhat relevant: What if the internet had never happened? We would still see splintering of ethnic and regional groups based on various criteria. Linux would probably not be as widespread as it is now. The issue I have with Katz and his latest ramble is that he operates on the assumption that the internet has somehow fed social splintering and driven a digital divide between individuals in regional communities. On the contrary, people worldwide are open to new ideas from people they normally would never meet or speak to in real life. People who are racist will gladly carry on an online conversation with the race of their ire due to the shield of anonymity that the net allows. This goes for all prejudices, and nobody can claim they have none. The internet has been a larger bridge to new people and new ideas than anything in history, maybe even surpassing that of the printing press.
    Long live the internet.
