  1. Reminds me of a Microsoft Security Forum I went to on Surprise, Windows Listed as Most Secure OS · · Score: 2, Interesting

I think it was in Jan 2004 when Windows 2003 just got really in general release and people started using it. The reps from Microsoft stated they were really focusing on security and he mentioned (I kid you not) that the corporate culture at MS to lean towards usability vs security would be tough to change and it would be like 'turning the Titanic'. Pretty funny.

But the real funny aspect / announcement was that MS was so focused on security that they would really make an effort to issue less security announcements and releases in the coming year. That's right - they decided to use the metric of announcements of security flaws as something they were going to use to measure their security improvements. So, as long as they issue less 'leaks' on the problems, they would be achieving their goals of being more secure.

This sort of 'study' seems to validate the MS thinking. Ignorance is bliss. I think I will go break the fuel gauge on my car so I will never run out of gas and kick the dashboard in to break the speedometer so I will never get a speeding ticket. Woo hoo!

An executive from a big organization X is looking at upgrading his Microsoft-centric network of products. He thinks he will get a good deal from MS because he is a big shot and the company or government agency is a big deal. He is shocked at the initial price MS comes back with. He knows he is not going to rip-out all the MS stuff across the massive network but really has no other way to bargain other than issuing a release saying he is evaluating (Redhat/Suse/ and now Google) and wants bargaining chips to take back to MS.

Let me tell you the end of the story for all of you, MS comes back and gives the software away on the initial upgrade pricing but nails them to the wall for years on support.

  4. Stick with TivoDecode/TivoDecode Manager on TiVoToGo for Mac Announced · · Score: 1

I am VERY happy with TivoDecode and TivoDecode Manager. The work David Benesch has been doing is awesome. It is VERY easy for a newbie to deal with. It also proves that if Tivo really gave a damn about Mac users, they could have put a very small amount of resources on it and come up with something. They really don't care and the efforts of people developing tivodecode and TivoDecode Manager for Tivo users is really awesome.

    http://thebenesch.com/tdm/

Tivo is has been going down the same road other device companies have gone down where they support multiple platforms equally and later they create platform feature parity so the under-supported platform (Mac in most cases) is so bad that no one uses it and they have a reason to cancel it because of lack of interest. Here it seems rather than cancel, Roxio can use it as a lifeline to push their own product. Tivo is no longer about creating cool stuff for it's users, it really is more about bundling what hold it has left on its base with other companies (through ads recently and now this).

Tivodecode is slick and easy to deal with. Get tivo a good network connection since 30 minutes of show is right around 600 megs of data to transfer down. The great thing about the 'Manager' is the decode on the fly.

These sort of 'surveys' and the type of 'research' by these sorts of people/organizations is such a waste anyway. It is the equivalent of Cliff-Notes(TM) for the IT world so it makes perfect sense that some PHB will now come to one of us and say 'Hey, did you hear about the MS/Novell agreement, should make things even better for us eh?'

  10. This is big deal for sling (mac) people on Sneak Peak at the Sling Player for Mac OSX · · Score: 2, Interesting

The buzz around this really is rooted in the way that Slingmedia has handled all of this. I was following this for a quite a while because I really liked the functionality of the SlingBox but was not happy on the lack of OS X support. Then, when Sony's Location Free TV came out and IODATA announced OS X software to work with it, I thought I was going to go down that route.

This is really more a kind of thing where Slingmedia showed an early beta of the OS X player (I think at MacWorld in Jan 06!) and the word got around, but Slingmedia was vague about exactly what was going to happen. Then, they did the typical "will release in Q3' garbage only to let that slip. They people went nuts.

So, long story short I was at Best Try this weekend and there was a SlingBox A/V there and the box had OS X icons (and Vista BTW - pretty funny) on the boxes. So, clearly Slingmedia's grand scheme was to already have the OS X release out by the time they release the new hardware models. Anyway, I bought one and got it working under Parallels on my Intel Mac Mini. Pretty amazing that the video and audio are synced-up while running in Windows 2000 in a Parallels environment VM. It works great. I tried initially to get it going on WINE and then CrossOver, but no dice.

Sling makes a good product, they just really dropped the ball on this. If they release the OS X player this month, all will probably be forgiven.

  12. Look at other markets for trends on How Ray Ozzie is Changing Microsoft · · Score: 1

There are a lot of other markets that are similar to this type of situation.

If you look at the the various players vs. the iTunes store model you perhaps can get a glimpse of the reaction to these competing market and 'solution' delivery styles. Whereas I think people are fine with renting items and services they must live with or don't want to invest in (like power, telephone services, etc.) they hold things that they find 'closer' to them as property and they want to 'own' it.

You probably do have a good amount of people out there who see computers as something they would just want to 'rent' but you also have a wide amount of people, like the slashdot crowd, that hold technology and issues such as these closer and of higher importance. Music is another example of this and the results are visible in the digital music marketshare breakdown (iTunes owning the market currently while others are in the rental/subscription business).

I remember having a long discussion with a guy from PointCast years ago (remember them?) arguing with him about their decision to drop support for Mac OS because they wanted to focus on windows. I told him to look for another job because they would be out of business shortly. MS came out with 'channels' that never really caught on but it was enough to blow companies like POintCast out of teh water.

Adobe is/was basically going down the same road. But developing for Windows primarily, then being VERY late on OS X versions of thier software, they continue to MS process and endgame.

Another great example is companies like Cisco and these other network equipment gear manufacturers. They come out with drivers and admin tools only in windows. I had to laugh when I saw a full-page add for MS networking equipment (hardware) in the WSJ. All the network equipment companies should be gone here soon too.

Companies need to start to see they are just furnishing rooms in a house in which someone else controls the floor, ceiling and walls and it is just a matter of time before all of them cave in on them once they become unnecessary to MS.
