Hello this is the new world calling all you stone age fools. If you are not billing by the hour and don't have fines (AKA OT pay rate) for crap managment trying to fix the problems they made with your a$$ and think all your "extras" they promise will add up to a hill of beans at the end of the year, here is your notice. Here in the USA the law of the land, thanks to Pres. Regan, is work at will. That means you need to always have some feelers out for the better paying job as it is this force of all workers that will keep you from not getting what you are worth. Unless you all are pushing together you will not be near to the max the market will bear and all that extra money you should be making will be going to people who have more money than time. Unless there is a boilerplate contract that applies to all employment that can only be change by the agreement of both parties (fat chance), and you don't have a contract that spells out what you are to be paid no matter what, then thses are the new rules.
Along the same line some "Drug House" laws that make a landlord responsible for the violations of the law his renters break gives a fine excuse to not rent to people who the landlord sees as a drug risk. So minority, lower income, and youth can be freely turned down by stating they are part of a drug culture risk the landlord can not afford to take as the penalties are moving toward taking the property away not just fines.
Probably been said already as I browse at 3+, but... I rather play a more thinking game where I dont have to be spinning in circles and shooting rockets out my butt like in Quake 2. Most games only go half measures and maybe the mod communities will make something to fill the gap. For example. BF2. If I modded the game I'd have the squad commanders the power to lock in the teammates AND give them the role to play. I want a team that makes sense. When everyone plays the same class or two it messes up the point of having a team. Glad to see they put VOIP in to the game (though it's not the best) as when you find a squad that uses it they will dominate others that dont...
Real team play, real tactics, less twitch and superman stunts. An for love of Game Play Nerf the Bunny Hopping Pronto...
Just tack a fee on to these things to cover tha cost of processing these things at the dump. Around my parts if I want to dump a freezer it costs $30. Why not make the 1st buyer cough it up? So that when it is dumped it will be "covered" cost wise. Otherwise the cheapskates or ignorant who would rather dump the device on the side of the road or back alley will continue to do so as they can't or won't pay the $30 bucks. Then the city/county has to pick up the tab in the end.
It should not be that hard to fix a cost on how much effort it takes to recycle these things and it should be paid upfront to a federal/state agency that bids out the job.
Your point 2. Upgrade your skills. With what money and what schools? Here in the Republik of California there is no money left and many people just have enough credit/cash left to float the rent/house payment for a bit longer then they are flat broke.
The UC are having the incoming students go to the Junior Colleges to get the classes they need. But no money is being added to have more staff at the JCs. Robbing Peter to pay Paul.
Number 2 in your list would be fine if Education was free. It could be financed by deficit spending or a nice tax on all the profit the companies are making with the hard work of the IT folks here in the US to create the systems that put them out of work.
To say that we the workers have no right to have a part of the profit of making the system better is the words of thieves.
Geee all of a sudden having a life is being seen by your boss as a bad thing and might cost you the job you need to live that life.
Well if you were a closed shop with a CBA (Collective Bargaining Aggreement) you might not have to worry about wanting (horror of all horrors) a real life.
Ask yourself have you been a good employee? Hardly ever late, put in those long hours, given your best to the projects you worked on? Then why the Hell should you have to give up your other dreams? Why should you not give time and energy to the ones you love? That is called being human.
With a Union you would not have to worry about those "young bucks" who will slave away for 90+ hours a week for less than half your pay because they don't have a life and would not know one if it bit them in the ass. Those young bucks get to start out on the bottom of the ladder and as long as you do not screw up on your job you will NEVER have to worry about losing the job.
The only reasons you should lose your job is if you screw up so bad repeatedly that you are a loser and need to be replaced OR if the company is losing money and they have to lay off workers to stay afloat. BUT all the young bucks get walking papers BEFORE you ever will. Last in first out. Progressive discipline. Wonderous words from the land of organized labor the folks that brought the 40 hour work week and weekends to you all.
Really you high tech types need to wake up and smell the java and start seeing yourselfs for what you really are. Replaceable workers, but also human beings who deserve to be treated better than the dirt these comapnies want to treat you.
What killed WebVan was this: They spent big bucks to "upgrade" to a fully automated system (more robots less people) WITHOUT doing at test study to see if they would actually save time/money. Come to find out the systen they had bought (maybe some other system would have worked but they were dumb for not testing it) was less efficient than the more human based system they already had. Opps! All that money to just slow down production. That sort of system is hard to recoup the costs. Not many people out there looking to be a food store.
WebVan was one of the few "new ideas" that was based on a proven model. Almost all food stores use to deliver in the city back before cars dominated everything.
Been looking for software where myself and my close pals can share our files, but only among us and without anyone knowing what we are sharing. Like to have search abilities like current P2P file sharing programs so just hosting a secure FTP site is not what we are looking for. Platform independance would be great. This would be something the RIAA and such would not spend much time on as the network would only be about several hundred people tops.
Main idea is that most of us in our group are going to have tastes in a similar ball park and are going to most likely have high quality files. We don't want to offer up what we have to everyone just our people, nor do whe care to let the world know what we are sharing.
When I search on Freshmeat and/or Sourceforge for P2P it seems, at least from the basic descriptions, that the main programs are all Kazza, etc copy cats with some sort of extra stuff to make em a bit different, but still seem all based on public access.
I got out of the Yearly wage. I am not looking back. Now when I give my company 65 hours in a week I get something for it beyond just getting to keep my job. Oh, and I am Union too. Which means management can still downsize me but they at least have to downsize the Joes below me before they can lay me off. Last job I had I was the bosses hire but the new manager did not care for me much... So so sorry we have to let you go, we do not have enough money. Never again.
I do not agree with Unions that write job descriptions or fix wages way above a fair market value, but I love my CBA (Collective Bargaining Agreement) which give me the power to, politely, tell my managers to blow it out thier ass when they try to pull unfair treatment. Employment at Will only really means your employers will.
Next time they call, do this... The script reader on the other end has no where in the script that allows them to hang up on you unless you say you are not interested or the "finish" the interview. So play dumb. Lead them on and on. Heck start reading from a book to them. Read the bill they send you, every part of it to them, every month they have sent you a bill. But never indicate that you want to end the "conversation".
Sure this screws with the poor person who has that Gwad aful job, but it slows the wheel of SBC by just that much and might give you a way to vent until they wise up.
Seems ADM and the rest of the world producers of Lysine (feed additive for poltury and live stock) got together and fixed the world price for the stuff. The companies were unlucky that a CEO at ADM ratted on them and helped out the FBI. But even the FBI says the CEO had some mental health issues...
Anyway, global price fixing is going on all the time and the FBI got very luck in the ADM case. So just saying we need three to "keep things in check" is wrong by real world example.
How about keeping the power to break up monopolies but let ALL industries AND labor fix the prices for the goods and services and quit wasting time trying to stop it. Once ALL industries AND labor are able to fix the price to whatever floats thier boats it will screw up savings but it seems that at some point everyone playing the game will get sick of it and try to come to some sort of rational means of setting up "priceing". Either that or the drive to compete will be so great that the insanity will spin out of control.
At least people won't be living in this farce of a competitive global market.
BTW one way to know if the Fix is on is that the Sales people were not allowed to offer better prices. So to all those Sales folks in global company land, if your bosses won't let you do your job you might want to call the FBI. Not like they will be able to do anything but you never know they might find another nut job of a CEO to rat out the others.
So like where 2 hard working programmers decided after making money with the software they have written, that happens to the best in the nich, and open the code. If the code is picked up by a development group like a University so that it is given a new lease on life, then you will see all the other players in that area have to fold.
This puts all the old style groups with it's executives, HR, and other support areas in the dog house. Good, bad? Now the tools they were making, the software, is free to anyone able to make it do something. When the tools are free only insight and good thinking to see where there are needs to be filled will feed your famliy.
And no I dont think it will feed all the families. Jeremy Rifkin has a nice book called "The End of Work" about some of this. He had no answer to how to employ all the people displaced by technology. Even with a 20 hour work week he could not get the numbers to come out rosey.

Seem to remeber an artical about how Mars has little or no magnetic field which protects our atmosphere. Otherwise the solar winds would strip away the gases we need to live. At what rate this stripping of gases happens was not communicated but it seems that it would be a factor to terraforming Mars.
