  1. typical katzian little-centric view on Review: The Dish · · Score: 1
yes, the oh-so-evil "typically us-centric" view, katz.

let us all remember the aussies, who made the true contribution to the us space program.

of course, let's forget about the american nasa scientists who worked for at least a decade just at trying to get to the moon, and the teams of american astronauts who trained and trained for eva's, docking, just the rigor of flying the ship. and let's forget the american people, who financed the effort, and the american president, kennedy, who gave overwhelming support to the space program.

because of course, they all came from america, and because of that fact, they must all be evil. worship the little guy, down with big business. god damn capitalists.

sometimes, jon, i wish you would've been born in the ussr or china. there, at least, you would be happy at the lack of government breaches of civil rights... oh wait.

(note: i have nothing against australians and feel that their contribution was necessary. however, to just bash america in general for forgetting what was, in reality, a rather small and behind-the-scenes action, is nonsense.)

  2. Re:Trusting in the Market on A Different Kind Of Digital Divide · · Score: 1

it doesn't matter whether or not it is "good programming". all that matters is whether or not people support it. good is subjective. dkny, for example, is good, no matter what the actual quality of the clothing. nike is good, even if your shoes fall apart in the first 10 minutes of wearing them. this is not due to a fault in the capitalistic system, however. it's due to a fault in humanity.

free market economy is the only system by which you have a choice. most people, on the other hand, choose to give up that choice in favor of looking good to others, which vaults trends to the highest level of good.

now, admittedly, pbs is wonderful. but i shouldn't be forced to pay for it against my will. nor should anyone else. it should compete in the economy, like everything else. and it could maintain it's quality of programming, and also gain a quality of goodness.

how? by being consistent. they could get a sponsor who knew the kind of programming that was going on, and who wouldn't interfere. and if that sponsor did interfere, it would be pbs' responsibility to not compromise, and stay true to their ideals. if they didn't, they are at fault. not capitalism. but if they didn't compromise, they would carve out a segment of the market, and stay alive.

don't insult capitalism for the faults of humanity. would you rather be compelled to pay for fox and their moronic programming against your will? no? didn't think so. so don't claim how noble it is to have the compulsion to pay for pbs.

If people started flocking to libraries and copying whole books (maybe they have free copy day or something that makes it economically feasible) do you think they would just let it happen? Do you think they would allow their resources to be used to copy hundreds of books a day? Not a chance, but because the resource is net access and it's music instead of books it's suddenly okay?

Firstly, books are alright to copy. Books are information, albeit in somewhat physical form. The point remains, however, that information belongs to anyone. It should be truly communistic. The only thing which might make one slightly reserved about copying a book is the amount of resources which were expended to make it and the amount it would require to copy it.

Music, however, is a bunch of little friggin indentations on a CD or - in MP3 form - a bunch of electrical/magnetic impulses. It as near to pure information as one can get. And since that's true, it should be equally shared with all parties who want it. No one should be able to copyright, patent, or trademark pure information.

The best way to increase the percentage of "good" outcomes is to educate people about guns.

Sex, in the wrong hands, is a deadly weapon. Sex, when used by an uninformed person, can transmit STD's that can injure, impair, or kill another person. Sex, when used by an informed person, can be extremely pleasurable and lead to procreation(which is less pleasurable, yet necessary).

Guns, in the wrong hands, are deadly weapons. Guns, when used by an uninformed person, can injure, impair, or kill another person. Guns, when used by an informed person, can be used for sports(which is not as horrible as some people think; do you know how long you can live off of the cost of one bullet?) and recreation(popping off a few rounds at the range is very relaxing).

Yet, with sex, we have a massive information campaign to make people understand. Guns, which are just as deadly and hurtful, are supressed and hidden. Why do you think kids kill other kids with guns? Because they're malicious? Because guns are bad? No, because they can use them and they don't understand them.

If people do not understand guns, they will never stop killing other people with them. You'll never make the rates go down without making people respect the power that is contained within that barrel.

Imagine being in a place everyday where you are forced to wear the same orange jumpsuit as everyone else, respond to a number instead of a name, and are generally treated like a criminal. The educational reforms sweeping the nation are scary, no?

Your jumpsuit is necessary to make sure you aren't comparing yourself with other kids, envying them and starting fights. What they really mean is that its so you're all the same homogenous mixture so that you all blend, and there aren't anymore weirdos left roaming the halls wearing all black.

Your number is on that ID card you have to wear, or else leave the school. The ID card used to be for identifying you so that they knew you were a student, but it gains more and more functionality, until you're being called by number, just because its easier.

And you're treated like a criminal so you don't disturb others' learning. No free speech, because controversy never leads to knowledge, opposing views always confuse you, better to follow the thoughts of those that came before. Unreasonable search and seizure? Sure, because one never knows what you might be hiding in that locker that they *force* you to use. And of course, you can't hang out with the people you want, for some may be bad influences. You'll conspire, and then you'll go on a massive killing spree. So, instead of associating with them, you leave the rebels alone, until one day they disappear from school entirely.

So let's see... uniforms, identification by numbers, no freedom of speech, unreasonable search and seizure, no freedom of association, people disappearing on the whim of admins. Does this sound familiar to anyone else? Wonder when we'll get the tattoos...
