I've written about one of my adventures while flying here... if anyone's interested in reading it.
I think that's a Geddy Lee lyric, but I can't remember off the top of my head which of 'da boyz' wrote it... the last time I bought a Rush album was on cassette (Superconductor???) and I don't even have a cassette player any more...
Personally, I think it will turn out to be the crown prince of Spain... but I wouldn't put any money on it. There's a pool going that it will still turn out to be Bill Clinton, but I don't think he's cool enough.
Actually, the earth's gravitational field "could" support an atmosphere MUCH MUCH more massive and considerably "higher" than we now have... in fact Mars gravity "could" hold an atmosphere heavier than ours...
Because evil should be challenged, and the lies, hipocrisy, mind control and greed of religion is the greatest evil that currently exists
First, how can I pass up suggesting that Justin Timberlake is the greatest evil that currently exists!?
There's no doubt that "religion" has been blamed for more deaths than smallpox. If you don't believe me, ask the Jews in Auschwitz. The truth is somewhat different. The real culprit is cultural differences and the fundamentally evil nature of all mankind. Christ never ordered his followers to kill non-believers. God ordered the Israelites to slaughter people on several occasions. On other occasions, God allowed his chosen people to be slaughtered and enslaved. It's hard for men to understand that. Especially when they've been "given over to pleasure-seeking, immorality, perversion, idleness". If you are referring to "belief in some kind of afterlife" when you refer to religion, then how CAN you define evil? If there is no afterlife and this life is all there is why would you bother defining evil? If there is nothing after death, then ultimately everything you do will be totally futile.
Only when it[sic] scourge is eliminated can humans stop exerting effort to please an imaginary boss and start exerting effort to improve thier own existence.
If there is nothing after this life, why would you try to "improve" your existence? Ultimately your efforts will be futile and you will grow old, feeble and die, if you don't check out sooner! No matter how much you accomplish, what diseases you cure, what programs you write, how many girlies you shag (or whatever it is that you shag...) ultimately it won't matter at all. Why don't you just kill everyone that bothers you... or just kill everyone period? It won't matter, nothing will last and after you're dead you won't care...
...
...Or could it be that deep down inside, you know there's actually something afterwards and you're just being an immature, rebellious child? I once heard a pastor tell someone who had stopped going to church because "it was full of hypocrites" to "come on in, we can always use one more!"
Christ loves all mankind, even scum like me! He died for my sins so that I won't be banished from the presence of God for all time. He did it from obedience and love. His greatest agony was being separated from God on the cross.
Go see the Passion of the Christ. Sure it's a movie, and sure Mel Gibson doesn't get it all exactly right, but it's a deeply moving film about the love Christ expressed for all of us!
NB: We don't get 70 eternal virgins to deflower continuously when we die, even if we do sacrifice ourself by killing infidels.
Christ's message of forgiveness and grace is the only one that rings true to me.
All other religions place the responsibility of salvation with the actions of man. For example: "You must sacrifice the unblemished lamb.", "You must travel the wheel until you reach enlightenment.", "There is no God, you are alone in the universe. Do whatever you want. Might as well kill yourself, though, it's all for nothing.", "You can only get to paradise, with it's eternal virgins for you to deflower, by killing yourself in a violent attack on unbelievers."
Christ's message was different: "I am sent by God to pay the price for your sins. All you have to do is believe in my salvation and accept me for who I am and you will be saved."
I just deleted a rambling diatribe on the various major beliefs (including those that say they DON'T believe anything...). I'm not qualified to really discuss this, so I recommend you read C.S. Lewis's Mere Christianity for starters. There are lots of other apologetics available, but suffice it to say that for ME, Christ's message is the only one that "feels" right.
Uncle B has been on several expeditions to "the mountains of Ararat" and has co-authored a book on the subject.
Many of the "facts" that have been presented on Slashdot are... well... this is Slashdot!
For open minded individuals, the abusive distortion of facts by ANY dogmatic belief (creation, evolution, humanism, christianity, islam, ufos, atheism, whatever!) is pathetic.
Facts are facts. The problem is always interpretation. As Rush said, "you can twist perceptions, reality won't budge." The problem is that many people accept the interpretation of data as FACT and that's just as dogmatic and foolish as someone who doesn't question the beliefs (or total lack thereof) that were imparted to them.
I find it interesting that the most "open minded" people turn out to be the most zealously dogmatic when confronted with something that is contrary to their opinion and beliefs, because let's face it: it is all a system of belief. Every factual interpretation is based on assumptions. Those assumptions probably seemed reasonable at the time. But they were wrong. It turns out that the Earth orbits the Sun, not the other way around!
As a Christian, I'm classified by a lot of people as ignorant or simple. The truth is that I choose to believe in Christ for one simple reason: if you want to know what it is, you can read my reply to this message. If you don't want to know, I won't proselytize. I give you the choice to read it or not.
SECONDED! Atkins worked great for me at first, but I stopped drinking as much water as I was before and FUCK ME HARDER! Gout attacked my ankle overnight! I had no idea what was going on and NOTHING I could buy over the counter that day would even moderate the pain. I woke up early and couldn't tolerate the motion that my on breathing imparted to the mattress on my ankle! It quickly hurt that bad constantly and any motion would cause my head to swim and I'd nearly pass out from the pain. Needless to say I was screaming a lot! I finally dragged my 275 pound 5'11" ass to my truck and had my wife drive me to the emergency room where I eventually learned that I had gout. Indocyn helped but the only thing I could do was stop eating all meat and shellfish! It is damn near impossible to do Atkins under these conditions.
Guess what I've found out now! The zone diet will cause my gout to flare up too!
I think the secret for me is to drink quarts and quarts of water every day to try and flush the uric acid out of my system, but I hate plain water so I'm goin to try adding lemon to plain water and occassionally cherry juice.
I cannot emphasize enough, get a full blood workup before you start any diet so you know what your levels are before you start. If your uric acid levels are high, drink a LOT of water every day.
Science, freedom, beauty, adventure: what more could you ask of life? Aviation combined all the elements I loved. There was science in each curve of an airfoil, in each angle between strut and wire, in the gap of a spark plug or the color of the exhaust flame. There was freedom in the unlimited horizon, on the open fields where one landed. A pilot was surrounded by beauty of earth and sky. He brushed treetops with the birds, leapt valleys and rivers, explored the cloud canyons he had gazed at as a child. Adventure lay in each puff of wind.
I began to feel that I lived on a higher plane than the skeptics of the ground; one that was richer because of its very association with the element of danger they dreaded, because it was freer of the earth to which they were bound. In flying, I tasted a wine of the gods of which they could know nothing. Who valued life more highly, the aviators who spent it on the art they loved, or these misers who doled it out like pennies through their antlike days? I decided that if I could fly for ten years before I was killed in a crash, it would be a worthwhile trade for an ordinary life time. -- Charles A. Lindbergh, 'The Spirit of St. Louis.'
High Flight Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings; Sunward I've climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth Of sun-split clouds, -- and done a hundred things You have not dreamed of -- wheeled and soared and swung High in the sunlit silence. Hov'ring there, I've chased the shouting wind along, and flung My eager craft through footless halls of air. . ..
Up, up the long, delirious burning blue I've topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace Where never lark, or ever eagle flew -- And, while with silent, lifting mind I've trod The high untresspassed sanctity of space, Put out my hand, and touched the face of God. -- John Gillespie Magee, Jr
Bob, with all due respect, have even read Dan's short explanation of Software User's Rights? You have the right to modify Dan Bernstein's software as you see fit. If you don't want to use a particular feature, don't. If you want to install qmail into the/etc directory, go right ahead. If you want to use/daemons instead of/service you are free to do so.
What you don't have permission to do is distribute changed versions of Dan's software without his express permission. You can distribute a patch that makes the software act differently or install differently, but you can't modify the software and then distribute the modified version.
Personally, I'm extremely thankful I have DJBDNS, QMAIL, etc. because they make my life easier, not harder like you seem to imply.
It's obvious you've never read any of the "expanded" Star wars universe books. If you did, you'd already know that the dark side of the force is fueled by "every living thing made of anti-matter."

Sarcasm impaired people please note that this was intended to be a bad joke.
I'm 32 and the same thing happened to me... I experienced my first gout attack when I was 26. I seriously considered cutting off my own leg. It was a serious ankle attack... if you've had one you know what I mean... If you haven't you can't understand. Most intense pain I've ever experienced. You could have drilled through my hand with a spade bit and I wouldn't have noticed. A woman I know who has had several children and also has gout (rare in females...) has told me that a bad gout ankle attack was 10 times worse than having her first child. I'll never know, but I believe her.
After several attacks you get to know when an attack is coming and do things to stave them off. LARGE quantities of water with cherry juice concentrate added works pretty well for me... most of the time. I haven't had to go on any medicinal therapy until now.
Anyways, I knew Atkins was a gout attack waiting to happen, but I did the research on it. I got about 30 pounds off using Atkins (easiest weight loss ever... never hungry!) but then gradually stopped drinking huge quantities of water to keep the ketones (and uric acid) flushed out through the kidneys... GOUT ATTACK!
After a couple of hours of screaming I made it to the doctor.
I'm on cochicine therapy now and in a couple weeks I'll start on allopurinal to lower my serum Uric levels. One month later I should be able to go back on a slightly modified Atkins diet.
1: Drink TONS of water 2: More fish and chicken than beef and pork 3: Lots of water 4: LOTs more water 5: No diet soda (well maybe a little... I'm an addict!)
Dan J. Bernstein has written a fantastic, lightweight server that will serve files via either or both FTP and HTTP depending on how the client connects.
If you want to serve files to the public, this is the most secure way to do so. If you need to provide the files to only certain logins, use something else. If not, you can run this on very lightweight hardware and if it's the only server running, you won't get hacked. Period.
I own a very small ISP in rural North Carolina. We started it mainly to allow us to have broadband in our programming office.
Until about a year ago, Sprint would allow us to order these point-to-point dry pairs. Since we didn't have any other type of broadband (except Sprint's "reasonably priced" frame-relay circuits ~$700 for a fracT1) we used these circuits with PairGain 300S sDSL modems. These are manually adjustable from 128kbps up to 2048kbps depending on the distance and quality of the lines. They work very well. We were able to use them with circuits approximately 2-3 miles long at speeds of 384kbps and in one case the line quality was good enough to support 768kbps.
There is a huge difference between a modem and 384kbps circuit. I highly recommend them.
That being said, these modems are very expensive. I haven't priced them in several years but they were about $900 for a pair a couple years ago.
I come from a commercial printing background. In that industry lighting is a BIG DEAL
Natural Sunlight on an average clear day is around 6500K. The industry standardized on 5000K based on some french research. It's been a while and I don't remember the details of the CIE study that produced the information. Mostly it was about the standard observer. Most of your calibrated light tables and viewing boxes are 5000K.
We switched over to 5000K flourescent tubes in our office a few years ago to make it easier to judge color proofs and the difference was amazing. These tubes have illuminants that provide 91% of the full spectrum. They're about $5/per tube, but they last longer than your standard el-cheapo brand.
If you are a light-sensitive person give these a try, you'll probably be pleasantly surprised and it may improve your mood, particularly during the winter.
YMMV and unfortunately I don't remember the exact details of the bulbs. I believe they are functionally equivalent to the other full-spectrum bulbs available but we purchased them through our graphic arts supplier so I know they could be gotten cheaper elsewhere.
I went back into programming and now all my illumination comes from halogen desk lamps.
DSL yes, T1 no. If you're paying for a full T1 you can almost always do whatever you want with it. Course you're bleeding like Ted Kennedy's liver from the cost
Gemini is statically linked to MySQL. Assuming that NuSphere is using MySQL licensed under the GPL and not a separate license from MySQL AB, then they are required to release their modifications under the GPL.
If they allow their modifications to be downloaded by anyone, they have to make the source available to them. They can require a registration at their site without violating the GPL, but they cannot implement a separate click-through license agreement for GPL licensed code. The real issue is that they were not licensing their modifications under the GPL which is a requirement of the GPL license for MySQL.
How about stringing that very delicate fiber over long distances? What about when there are breaks? Fiber is almost impossible to put back together from two ends, as it has to be 1/4 wavelength+ or scattering will result in an increased error ratio.
You've obviously never heard of a fiber splice before, have you? Have you ever heard of a fusion splicer? You can actually make a pretty good mechanical splice, too. Yes, there's a dB loss, but there always is. It's not that big a deal.
It failed because DAO doesn't support Access 2000. We ran into that "WTF Moment" last week. We weren't programming in Access though, we were using MFC/VC++ (which if you've never used it is the biggest POS I've ever used.)
What does all this mean for the free software world? Once you've legally downloaded a program, you can compile it. You can run it. You can modify it. You can distribute your patches for other people to use. If you think you need a license from the copyright holder, you've been bamboozled by Microsoft. As long as you're not distributing the software, you have nothing to worry about Emphasis Added....
DJB gives his software away, but he retains the copyright. You don't have the right to distribute copies of his software to other people unless he gives you that right.
That being said, he explicitly gives you the right to distribute or copy his software here:
You may distribute copies of qmail-1.03.tar.gz, with MD5 checksum 622f65f982e380dbe86e6574f3abcb7c. Vendors: I'd be interested in hearing about any CDs that include the package, but you don't have to check with me if you don't want to.
This gives you the right to distribute his software. You can also distribute any of your patches right along with it. You may not modify qmail with your patches and then distribute that without prior permission from DJB. He retains the copyright which means he gets to determine how his software is copied and distributed.
DJB does not LICENSE his software because he knows that a "software license" is legalese bullshit. It's a manufactured concept that doesn't really exist. Federal copyright law (in the US at least) is the "controlling legal authority."
How can you have a problem with someone retaining the copyright to their work?
The GPL is a legalese response to a situation that shouldn't really exist. It's unfortunate, but when you release the source code to your software, unscrupulous people will take that code and do what they want with it. the BSD and GNU "license" are not "software licenses" in the same respect that Micro$oft's shrink-wrap "license" is, they are a standard "distribution terms" from a copyright holder.
DJB's software is free in every sense of the word. You can obtain it gratis and you are "free" to modify it however you wish as is the right of every owner of a copy of a piece of software. You even have the right to give away or sell copies (yes sell!) of DJB's software. You can modify and patch his software as much as you want, but in order to continue to have the right to distribute the software freely, you must keep your work separate as a patch. Alternately, you could just ask the copyright holder for permission to distribute a modified version of his software as a precompiled binary. Assuming that you don't break DJB's compatability directive you'll probably be granted that privilege.
The GPL is no less restrictive when it says that you must release the source code to your modifications to a GPL'd piece of software.
