Ah but you say they just bought the domain on a stolen CC card yes perhaps they did but we are starting to get a paper trail to the spammer who would also be a criminal if they did that.

Some cinemas would have never been able to afford the upfront cost (and infact risk). In the days of multiplexs and chains it has also been used laterly to milk big hits. I got to see Matrix reloaded at my local multiplex (I have 2 walking distance from my house) and didn't think that the 3 pounds (4.5 dollars) was alot to pay for my ticket, that would have bought me one pint of Guiness in london and lasted ALOT longer (some might say two long....)

Here is another way, when a library is dynamically loaded, the program tells it what "version" it was linked against, this can then switch the new libraries api to work like the older version of the API. For example if a function aways returned zero in version 3, they latter it was changed to return a bool in version 3.2 when the it loaded and sees the program was linked against a version 3, the function will return 0.

The other way is to group DLL is api group, so all DLLs with the same API can be used interchangably... but that means they have to support old library versions.... (never going to happen).

Think about it, if there is a problem with say the resolving library which means your machine is insecure, with static linking you have to rebuild everthing, also with static linking you have to work out what is statically linked with it too...

The key think however is having a rock solid library interface with no "special" features which require XX version of YY. The incompatibilities only start happening when the interface suttly changes. Some programs get bitten and not others due to which parts of the interface they use....

If you cannot get all the information you want in user space, write a driver to patch the information you need though to user space.

An example of this is binary firmware for devices, you can just patch the loading routinues through a driver an upload a what ever you like. For example the DXR2 drivers provide all the access functions, but within the magic binary only firmware they are useless, the only thing your "device" gives away is how to write a kernel modules, but there again, you could just take someone elses gpl kernel modules and make it work for these ends saving you development time.

Having said that run time loadable modules do not have to be GPLed the only code your need to include to build one of these are kernel header files and if you look carefully at those they are not GPLed so the compiled object does not have to be GPLed. I believe using non gpl loadable modules in a GPL kernel is specifically allowed (I believe).

I think this system fits with the linux point of view. Getting support for as much stuff as possibile is good if it means non gpl fine, just don't expect us to help you. Non gpl is better than nothing at all (in many peoples book). But there again, I don't buy nivida graphics cards because of their policy of binary drivers.
