Thought I'd log in for a change to post this instead of just being yet another AC complaining about the direction mainstream distros have seem to taken.

I did Google to try to confirm whether or not Poettering had anything to do with NetworkManager. I didn't find anything to back up that assertion.

I have been a Linux user in one capacity or another for almost 20 years now; it's certainly been my kernel of choice for everything but video games for a little over 10 years. Whether or not Poettering has anything to do with NetworkManager or not doesn't change the fact that it's shit. PulseAudio is also shit. I have no idea whether SystemD is shit or not. I've never used it, and my distro of choice (Gentoo) uses OpenRC by default.

I've used most every major distro at one point or another from Slackware to Ubuntu. I've even gone through Linux from Scratch a couple times. I recommend everybody who wants to "learn computers" do a Linux from Scratch just for the educational experience. I've dabbled a bit with the BSDs but never really used them.

NetworkManager: as others have posted, it's just flat out unreliable. I used BodhiLinux on a laptop for a few years before the laptop died. It seemed to work well enough with wired and the home wifi, but it wouldn't connect at all, no matter what I tried, the last time I stayed in a hotel. It took me about an hour to figure out upstart and how to tear NetworkManager out (not nearly as familiar with Ubuntu as Gentoo and no Google to turn to without internet). After editing wpa_supplicant.conf, the thing connected just fine.

Maybe NetworkManager has its place, but it's not difficult for me to do iwlist wlan0 scanning and just edit a damned config file. That's just my desktop/laptop needs. I also have a IPv6 router/IPv4 NAT/wireless access point running Gentoo. I'm not sure I could imagine any kind of consumer oriented technology that would give an easy GUI to bridge the wireless nic with the wired lan, dhcp the wan side up, and also manage a 6RD tunnel. (Not to mention hostapd, dnsmasq, and radvd.) Well, I should say I can imagine it, but I would never spend time developing such a thing unless I were getting paid.

PulseAudio: while network transparency is neat and all, I never could figure out how to remove about 1 whole second of delay. I used ESD until ALSA became the audio stack of choice. I have no idea what PulseAudio provides above and beyond ALSA's built-in dmix. I'm also using the swmixer module since my headset is just way too damned loud by default for whatever reason.

SystemD: I still don't understand what I would gain by switching to systemd. Then again, I don't even use XDM or an XDM alternative. I understand how my system works inside and out right now. If I switched to systemd, same as with upstart, I would have to relearn all of that. If I ever get a job as a Linux admin, I'll worry about learning systemd then.

Honestly, I don't care what Debian and Fedora (and the derivative distros) do. When I was younger and had more free time, I didn't mind trying new things even if they were slightly broken. Hell, up until about 6 or 7 years or so ago, there was always something that was slightly wonky when it came to Linux on the desktop. The system I have now is solid as a rock and just works. I really don't give a crap if what I have set up would work well for a mobile device or whether a layperson can use it or not, because my computer isn't a mobile device, and I'm not a layperson.

  3. I hear you. I'm predicting World War 3 if Clinton is elected, and all polling data says she will be. I have every reason to believe that we're on the verge of yet another market crash, and it may happen before I had even estimated when posting as my time traveler character. Trump might just be able to make lemonade out of lemons. I'm convinced that Clinton will only serve her Wall Street interests until we all lose.

Trump has said some unfortunate things. I think he's far from being a dummy. He might actually be an effective president.

That being said, I'm abstaining because his supporters are the ones who scare the hell out of me. I have a cannabis daydream I can always retreat to where I'm not transgendered. I'll put this out there. If Trump can promise to leave states that have legalized recreational cannabis alone, I'll very much consider voting for him in the general election. Clinton scares the hell out of me because of the malleability of her opinions and her historic support for TPP/TTIP/TISA.

Of the technically minded women I've had the privilege to work with, I can assure you that they don't really give a flying fuck about fashion and celebrities when they're on the clock. These are people I can talk to about database design or memory allocation. Here's a hint about where the source of the gender problems we've had in tech may be: one of those women was an English major. Yes, I was discussing database design with an English major because she fucking got it. I'm guessing that at some point somebody erroneously told her to avoid maths and science because they were male dominated fields. She was quite the logical thinker.

Meanwhile, after she was sexually harassed out of her programming job by a gaslighting asshole manager, I'm currently stuck with a dimwitted oaf of a man who can't operate a command prompt or even begin to understand join tables as a cow-orker. I refuse to call him a colleague or even put the hyphen in the grammatically correct place.

One woman I particularly looked up to (cisgendered but not a cisgendered hunny by a longshot) was particularly focused. She's one of the more rational people I know, and she showed me that women don't need to be cowed by men who are aggressive and outgoing. I learned quite a bit from observing her about how to be assertive if one is not wired for masculine aggressiveness.

I would tell you her one weird trick except that I'm a cis het misogynerd as far as feminism is concerned as long as I'm a "programmer...."

The women I've mentored don't find make to be a sign of hostility. Only a digbat feminist who doesn't know jack about programming would interpret things that way.

I realize you made a typo, but I'm being half serious.

  10. I'm going to have to agree with you on this one.

It may also be a contributor to the various gender disparities we have in tech. For a cisfemale who wants a work/life balance, tech is the last place to be. For a cisfemale who wants prestige because of her career and doesn't care about work/life balance, tech is also the last place to be. Doctors don't have near the diversity problems as in tech.

I would be willing to propose an experiment where we attempt to raise a few hundred babies in an environment where orange is a girl's color and green is a boy's color. I don't think I'd be able to get it past an ethics committee even if I were a researcher, though.

Just help me understand one thing. Let's say that there is an honest to goodness pay gap here, not nearly the gap that the inflammatory headline suggests, but a measurable one. Why the fuck is it the responsibility of people in tech who happened to be assigned the male gender at birth to fix it? Why the fuck do the asshole managers get a pass here?

Is it because the asshole managers are "good with women" or whatever?

There are two women I've mentored who are no longer in tech careers because of asshole managers. One of them quit after being sexually harassed and psychological abused. Is sexual harassment a-ok when it's coming from a manager because he's probably "good with women" or some shit? The other one was fucking fired basically because she had the temerity to have a personal life. In both cases, all of their technical colleagues enjoyed working with them and respected them. 14. First I was going to downmod you, then I was going to flame you, but you actually make some kind of point in the most crass and misogynist way possible.

See, here's the problem. We have an article that says that software engineers and mobile developers have almost reached pay parity. This is great news! Listen up, women, you don't want to be a video game artist and only get paid 85 cents on the dollar, you want to be in software engineering and development! Right? Right?

For some reason we have a headline that plays on the long discredited 75-ish cent pay gap between men and women. This is nothing more than a flamebait/clickbait article and yet another attack on all assigned males who went into programming careers.

Really, the only useful way to use the often-cited ammunition that's supposed to make all assigned males FEEL GUILTY that women make 75 cents on the dollar is in a sociological sense. I can't seem to find it anymore (pretty sure I found the correct AVFM article but the links were all mysteriously broken), but level of education is a pretty good predictor of the amount of a "gender gap" that women will face. Women who have a college education will find themselves making roughly what their male counterparts are making. (I'm also failing to find an article that I think was posted to this site a while ago that women pay women less than men pay women.) Women who only have a high school education have a huge pay gap.

This is fairly easy to explain. If you were assigned the male gender at birth and you only have a high school education, you're still going to need to make money if you want to raise a family. You might become a truck driver or a plumber or learn how to weld. If you're a cisfemale and you only have a high school education, the state will provide for you. All the state asks is that you find a minimum wage job somewhere. Plus, cisfemales believe that their husbands should make more than them and are fundamentally uncomfortable with the other way around. A cisfemale who wants to use her animal functions as her sole contribution to society has no reason to seek anything over minimum wage.

So, what you wish you would have said is that women who have no interest in a career and would rather be mothers first don't seek jobs that pay as much.

  15. The headline chosen is quite perplexing. I'm reading an article that says that has a headline that says women "programmers" make 72 cents on the dollar, and in the article I find that "software engineers" and "mobile developers" make 94 and 97 cents on the dollar respectively.

Shouldn't the headline be that female software engineers and developers are in a field that gives them nearly equal footing?

I'll tell you the breadth and scope of the interest every cisfemale who has ever gone "I wanna be a programmer" was envisioning: they wanted my job. When they found out that the reason I had my job was because I combine areas of expertise from system administration to programming and multiple OS paradigms such as Windows, Linux, OS 7 (back before iThingies) and even back from Second Age of the Internet before Eternal September when a consumer computer just booted to a prompt where one could type in a program in BASIC. No DOS, nothing. Just a prompt. And I'm on the young side here. I missed all the fun of the First Age of the Internet when Ma Bell wouldn't let modems connect directly to the phone system and tic-tac-toe games were programmed on punch cards.

I realize I started a sentence there but never finished it. Every cisfemale who has ever gone "I wanna be a programmer" was envisioning having my job. When they found out that the reason I have my job is because of extensive experience brought about by utter passion, suddenly I became the sexist who was just making everything too technical because for some reason I think cisfemales shouldn't be programmers. I see no neurological reason cisfemales cannot be programmers. After all, I've got the same wetware in my head and the same hormones in my blood. The difference is socialization. It was made utterly clear to me that if I wasn't the fucking best, I'd be a fucking homeless bum.

Yeah, I'm being half-facetious here by comparing the evolution of information systems to the history of Middle Earth, but I hope it drives the point home. The reason I know shit is because I was passionate about it. I wanted to know where it came from and where it was going. I'd never imagine that I'd be carrying around a supercomputer in my pocket that I'm unable to program myself simply because of digital restrictions management.

Everybody has their reason why we buried ourselves in this shit, why we slept it, ate it, drank it, etc. I lived in a world I couldn't understand. Feminist hero!... standing by her husband's side... then she goes into the kitchen to make a sammich... feminist hero... giving us father knows best from the 1950s.... Of all fucking things, Clinton got egg on her face over AIDS! Of all fucking things wrong with trying to praise Reagan as a role model for women... AIDS! GRID!

I cast my vote for the Bern. I'm not even sure if I'm going to bother voting in the general election. Clinton is as good as coronated at this point. I used to be one of those people who would post here, "Get out and vote! Vote for somebody! Anybody!" Seeing the amount of control the media has over who gets votes, voting has been shown to be truly pointless.

It would be one thing if Clinton's support of Barry Goldwater were a blemish on her record and if she were able to help us understand her change of heart. According to the media, her volunteer work for Goldwater's campaign never happened, and to add insult to injury, Sanders apparently wasn't even involved in the civil rights movement. It would be one thing if Trump actually did have a bad earpiece in that interview wrt the KKK endorsing him. Trump had already disavowed the KKK's endorsement at that point. Article after article after article still acts like Trump had never disavowed the KKK. Completely missing from all this is the Nation of Islam's endorsement of Trump.

The TPP is coming. There will be some politically handy thing that happens that will allow Clinton to do an about face back to her original position on the TPP when she gets into the Oval Office. The cows will be just fine with this. Chocolate rations will be up to 25 grams per week because of the glorious TPP! The cows will rejoice. Then TTIP and TISA. We should probably prepare to take discussion sites like this to darknets, depending on how bad TISA really is.

I suppose Jill Stein or Gary Johnson will probably be on the ballot in November.

I guess when you live in a country full of easily manipulated cows being led to the slaughter... I don't know. I'll guess I'll just go back to posting one-line insults as AC. Never mind me.

I'm just wondering if it's all the same person. We've seen this pattern before with the truth+mercy=justice "trust in moms" troll. What do you folks think here? VPN that's hopping endpoints? Botnet? TOR?

  25. As the resident expert on all things cis and trans, I'm way ahead of you, AC!

May I recommend Hyperion and The Fall of Hyperion?
