There are technical reasons why the new music is shit. Take out your old AC/DC or Rush album and plop it in the CD player and compare its volume level to a new CD. You will find that the older CDs are at a much lower volume level and the new or re-mastered CDs are all at a much higher volume level however when they do that, it ends up killing the emotion of the music. Examples of this are Thunderstruck from AC/CD or Rise from Herb Albert. Both are quiet by modern standards but have a wide range of energy that simply doesn't exist on modern albums outside of rap. Rap gets around this auditory abuse by the mixers because the peak energy tends to be spoken (which can be clipped) and tends to be in beats so the auto clip stuff can't do its job.
Another example of this audio abuse comes from what I call the Abba sound. (Hey were are discussing teenage music here). The female vocals are remixed in a very interesting way that gives them far more energy. The voice is sampled, then accelerated, boosted then slowed down. This trick gives a bright clear sound to the vocals that seems to increase the energy however thanks to Nyquist theory and digital samplers thinking 44 khz is the max you would ever need, this sort of thing doesn't sound right out of most digital mixers these days since the resulting sound has already had its high frequency chopped and the auto level adjusters just ignore the harmonic peaks and they are just clipped. While it kills off all the energy of the music, it also kills off most of the new bands that would appeal to the largest (only?) demographic of singles buyers which happens to be teenage girls.
Your right about Howard being very skilled politically. Latham looked downright amateurish and when he started taking lessons on being political, it make him look bad. The only two people the labor party seems to have that are politically switched on in front of the cameras are Tanner and Peter Garrett.
One thing about the recent Aussie election is that people who would answer polling questions were slightly more likely to vote labor right before the election but in the booths, more people picked the liberal party.
For Americans, the Liberal party is John Howard's party and is very Republican. The Labor party is more like the Democrats.
Old info... There is an Aussie slant to the article and while I will adming that doing business downunder is much more expensive than in the US, it can be done.
As far as wireless being un-competitive, its just some networks. Some are cheaper than DLS. Its just that the gov't just dropped the fee to allow this and its taking months to get the paper work in. Some of us already have base stations ready to go and and we can do it much cheaper than the other players and when you consider nearly 2 million people are LOS, theres lots of room to play in that field.
As far as FTTH, there are locals that can get fiber to a home for under AU$1000 (read that US$750) per home if you have something like 10% takeup. I spoke with a guy last week who was talking about ways to get fiber to a home for under US$0.10 per meter and the gear for the house being less than US$250. If this works out it will be cheaper to do FTTH than wireless and it can provide more services such as video on demand which is the real money maker.

They were like this for years with Virtual memory and of course the holy of holys one button mouse. I wonder how much that one button mouse has hurt Apples sales. When most of the apps that come with the OS do useful things with the other mouse button, its time to start adding one the hardware and why they are at it, add a scroll wheel. We are in 1981 anymore.
I know of one company that has a.biz that is legit. I did mention to them that I'm just about erady to nuke all email that even mentions.biz and they might want to consider a new domain name.
I welcome the new top domains. It means more rules for my spam filters.
E. He is pissing off the many voters out side of the US. Of course if they haven't sent in their ballot yet, its too late to be counted but thats not the point.
Please research X.400 before you talk about trashing SMTP.
Also anything you replace sMTP with is going to have patent problems. The result is your going to have to pay per message and there isn't going to be any way around that.
Is this PON or something else? Does anyone know of the details of the gear that makes this work?
The PON stuff is getting cheaper, for example a small headend unit is now about $4500 and the stuff at each house is less than $750 and with fiber running a dime a meter, the major costs is the trenching and fusion splicer.
This one is going to get forced through to the PHB that run the fortune 500. Then everyone will pay in a few years when MS changes their fees. Just because its free now doesn't mean they can't change their mind or nail you with a different patent. As far as I know they may have applied for two patents on the same thing and are sitting on the 1st one and are willing to give away the 2nd. Then all they have to do is sell off the 1st to someone who will go after anyone they don't like.
Must be nice to buy cars in the US market. In Australia where the car prices are much better than the UK, a Ford Mustang will set you about about AU$75k (US$56k) and a base Saab is in about the same range.
As far as A/C not being needed, I disagree. There are places where working A/C should be requireed just to cut down on road rage. That includes everywhere that has hot summers.
I figure about 1/3 is connectors, 1/3 the wire and 1/3 the insulation.
With fiber, the connectors weigh far more than most of the modern automotive ones, the insulation will be thicker to protect the fiber but the fiber its self will be way less than 1%.
Most 12V systems have insulation rated at 400V so there won't be any change between the 12 and 48 v systems except the wires can go down a size or two.
Saab used a CAN BUS like thing for a while but it turns out that extra electronics on the end of everything ended up costing more than just running the wire. Wire is cheap and well understood and easy to diagnose.
When the US is defined to have the best health care, it tends to about the diagnostic equipment. For example there are less than 100 MRI machines in all of Australia and most of them are in on city. Chicago on the other hand has far more scanners but the population base that they are used to support is smaller than Sydney. That means its easier to get a MRI done in the US for trivial things than a scan in Australia so the doctors either have to put the patent on a waiting list or make the diagnosis without the scan. 5 years ago the town of Columbia Missouri (population 100,000) had more MRI scanners than Melbourne which has population of over 3 million.
As far as doctors are concerned, in both places I find about 50% of them are quacks.
It depends on how you collect your admin stats. The small town where I went to high school had 6 people in the city school admin building plus principals in each school plus their assistant . Now each school has several admin assistants and there are over 20 people working in the city admin building. The population of the town hasn't grown much at all in the 20 years.
The major place the US federal education money goes is yellow school busses. The US spends more on getting its students to and from school than any other place in the world by far. In most parts of the world, students walk to school and so could 90% of US kids but they don't.
One of three universities I attended had more employees than students. I thought that was kind of odd for a state university. The non-teaching staff tended to make more money than the professors so I wonder how much of my tuition bill went to cover admin overheard.
It went in and went to work and never got shut down even for upgrades. And at the weekly status meetings, the BOFH that ran it would report uptime in different units such as years, or seconds or days. It made for some interesting graphs that the PHBette would produce since she stripped the units and just plotted the numbers along with everything else in the data center.
So you found a low cost unit that I've never seen before and the cheapest unit at the local boat supply place was just shy of $2k when I was there last week.
If you head read what I said is they didn't take the easy route and put the 121.5 detectors in the GPS sats. The GPS sats already have 99% of what is needed to do what I proposed.
While 121.5 may go away inside the US, its going to be around for a very long time in the rest of the world.
Don't the blind taste tests show some interesting results as well? The coke / pepsi / rc taste tests tends to show very odd results such as most brand drinkers can't tell. Those that can tell fit in a different group where it seems like coke drinkers tend to prefer coke, then pepsi then Rc while Pepsi and RC drinkers tend to prefer rc, pepsi then coke. I expect that is a result of the perceived sweetness. Depending on the region where you do this test, you may find that the local water has a major influence in the results as well. Coke seems to be the least sensitive to be local water where Dr Pepper is the most. Once again, you don't need and MRI to tell you this.
I've seen this done with toasters. I figure the custom part number adds about 15% of the costs of a toaster.

Real geeks would be an HP 41.
And yes I know someone that has done it.
Why Orange?
Because MS has a trademark on the red, green, blue and yellow flag?
This new logo looks like a trademark law suit looking to be lost.

The original poster is correct. Unplugging a game controller is a normal event.
Having the USB interface get hit by an alpha particle and telling the driver that it now needs to read 0x01000002 analog axis is an exception.
Since its not real property, they had to tack on the word Intellectual in a hope to con people that it is.
This is a major problem when a products name is trademarked. How do you refer to just that product if it doesn't have another name?

I was told by a M$ exec in 1993 that they want a bit of every email message in the world just like the post office.
I don't think they have changed at all.
