I as a European I lived my politically formative years under Margaret Thatcher....
All mainstream US media outlets are very pro-state, small-c conservative and fairly right-wing, the exception is Murdocks organs; they are extremist far-right wing.
It's a 'marketized' version of rugby.. They have been convinced to wear all the nancy-boy padding for 'safety', but mostly it's so that sports equipment manufacturers can make a mint selling it while giving ad-wankers the maximum amount of logo-space.
There was once, so I understand, quite an interesting ball sport played in the US. An evolved variant of all the other 'football' type games played round the world. I believe it may even still be played by a small group with just an oval ball and a bunch of shirts/cones/stones to mark out a pitch and a sense of sportsmanship.
But the commercial/educational variant of it has morphed into a mockery of a sport which exists solely as a vehicle for advertising, sportsware sales and pay-per-view.
So, lord Mandy, a total media wonk (and highly manipulative individual) has gotten together with other wonks in the media to agree to 'crack down' on piracy. How nice.
This is easy to beat folks; deprive them of money and mandy will slime away, like most modern politicians he's totally besotted with influence and power. Take away the music industries money and they loose that influence, and Mandy will sleeze away from them looking for the next big thing.
Media types need to understand Economics 101, you used to be able to charge 20 euros for an album and I'd pay because it was the only way I could get the music in hi-quality for listening wto whenever I wanted. Ok.
But now it is worth a 10 cents or less to me. This is an economic problem and trying to use the law to distort the market is anti-capitalistic.
Do what I do, and totally stop paying for media. Not by piracy, but just by sticking only to free stuff. Plenty of original music gets delivered straight to my ears, completely legally, without the 'music industry' profiteering at all.
I pay for my internet connection because that is a physical service, and I'll accept a moderate amount of advertising with my media, but that is all..
I choose to get it direct from the artists (and through portals like magnatunes etc..); and if I am not allowed to download music from a site created or controlled directly by the artists, full quality, free in both senses of the word, then I simply move along. I support artists directly with concert attendance and buying merchandise. But again, I check to see how deeply the 'music industry' is involved in the process and avoid venues/merchandising that they control.
Basically, I am using capitalism to solve the problem. Any objections from the 'industry' to that?
Video is more of a problem, I still go to cinemas, and there is a lot of entertaining free video out there, but I still watch TV for my sci-fi, and pay for that because I have decided it is worth it.
I think the people who were already living there would have probably objected..
In fact, he was just a 'Discovery Troll', who, having 'discovered' the lands, 'claimed' them for His imperial majesty.
They were then systematically despoiled while the people who had merely been living off the land for generations were treated as if they did not exist, or called degenerates and criminals if they objected to their new rich and violent overlords.
AFIK it can only affect the built-in admin accounts password (because this is always the 'first' password in the database); normal users cannot be locked out.
I stopped reading gaming mags/sites years ago, too many puff-pieces for vapourware, or people telling me I'd be sooo much more competitive if I just spent loadsamoney on their hardware. Instead; I tried asking real people what games they played, how well it played, and if online play was fun or just a button-twitch fest.
I'm sure I remember a case (reported here way back) where someone in the US called his supervisor pedantic.. got in the next day to find his desk cleared and the HR waiting where to tell him he was being sacked. Guess what she thought he'd called her?
So, if (with evidence) we demanded that some mediocre nonentitiy US citizen be extradited for placing our citizens in danger, the US courts will approve it and systematically reject all appeals saying tha tthe treaty overrides your constitution?
Way to go! finally you guys are seeing sense.
Nice troll, but as you are aware the fact that pretty much every peripheral and application out there works with Windoze is because the designers and developers are forced to do it by the Windoze monopoly; and is not very often an active choice on their part, since selling a non-windows device is a shortcut to unprofitability. For example, Ipods have a windows client.
Basically the pain has been transferred from Microsoft and consumers onto the developers of those products; they are the ones who have to try and behave nicely with a badly-architected and insecure-by-design OS, and who typically get blamed even when the bugs are Microsofts responsibility/fault.
Errr.. It was also the political establishment and the London corporations who opposed Snow, Since what he proposed cost money and meant disruption to their business. In turn they bolstered the old school scientists (who KNEW miasma was the cause, because it had been believed as fact for hundreds of years) to resist him. They maintained this even as he presented irrefutable evidence he was right.
Your analogy was accurate 30 years ago, back then there were a few scientists saying 'we cannot continue consuming resources at this rate, we will disrupt our environment too severely if we do', names you might recognise such as Lovelock, Sagan, etc. And they got treated as 'idiots, idealists, and hippies', back then, by the same talking heads that even now continue to resist anything that hurts their profit and power lust.
So that is an interesting analogy, but like most deniers you deliberately twist it. The reality is that you are essentially one of those old-guard fools arguing well after the fact that Snow was wrong.. and desperately clinging to a miasma theory that flatly contradicts rationality and reality.
Think carefully about how you abuse telemarketers, making death or violence threats is a pretty shitty thing to do, especially if you are not psychotic and unlikely to follow-through. After all, that just makes YOU look silly, all mouth and no balls.
Instead: Insult them in ways that belittle their job and company, make it clear the total contempt you have for businesses that produce no meaningful products or income, and who's existence is parasitic off people who do the real work (ie, the people who they cold-call and irritate). At all times make sure they are aware that you consider yourself a victim of harassment by their company. And that you consider the salesperson themselves to be a victim of their big bosses too, forced to do a obviously nonproductive and parasitic job by their companies inability to generate original income. Then compare them to the 'I was just doing my job' participents in many atrocities, make sure they know you consider them individually responsible for being a very small part of the collective, antisocial, behaviour of telemarketers.
If you do this right they will hang up on you.. which is always a great outcome.
Not testing, not getting their requirements right, not fixing bugs. Choose any arbitrary combination of the above. Fortunately I discovered Exaile, and since then I have not bothered about Amarok any more.
Almost... I spent time getting it to work (possible, if you read enough forum postings and sort the good advice from the bad..) but then moved my homedir to a permanently inserted MMC card. I now get the problem of the partition table on that getting corrupted if I suspend it (fixable via testdisk with no data loss by the way..) this is solvable by rebuilding the kernel with a specific flag/option.
So I've gone back and disabled suspend (automatic or if the lid is shut), since I've got the boot down to 30 seconds it's not too traumatic.
I'm moving to Archlinux on it soon anyway, for decent H/W support you really need a 2.6.28 kernel. Fedora are not going to provide that for F10 (in any sensible way) so Arch is probably a better solution for me.
I'm posting this on a netbook, (asus aspire one) with Fedora 10, 1.5Gb of ram, and no swap.
Currently I have FireFox (plus real+flash plugins), gimp, aMSN (3 sessions, 2 with webcam) plus all the usual Gnome bits ruinning, and/proc/meminfo says just under 1/5th of the memory is active. I'm starting to wonder if swap is just another obsolete solution to a problem that no longer exists for most real-world users.
The only things I have seen using swap these days are clunky bloated Java webapps on our servers in the office. (Artifactory is particularly poor in this regard, how any piece of software can use so much resource while delivering so little functionality I just don't know).
No, it merely asserts the right not to be shot. In a society where guns are the norm not carrying one is an act of independence and bravery. Oh, and my lack of this 'right' (Ik woon in de Nederlands) means I am 1/2 as likely as an American to be murdered with a gun, that makes me happy.
The problem is that the words themselves come from a time when stealing/thieving by definition meant that you deprived the original owner of the use of their property.
But copying, where the original owner still has a perfect and fully functional object.. is different.
It might still be very, very wrong, but there is a definite difference on the effect upon the property owner.
It's not wrong to emphasis this point. It's only the artificial concept of 'Intellectual Property' that has blurred the line. Our ancestors did not really care when 'Urk' stole the idea of banging rocks together from 'Grok', but they probably did care when Urk stole Groks' rocks.
... For all I care soccer is the better term. It's close to sucker.
Brilliant! thanks :-)

I knew patent trolls employed lawyers, but I had not realised they employed judges too.

Why do we report bizarre claims to Slashdot without requiring the scientific method to be applied.
If I claim to be psychic and to be able to use ESP to read emails out of thin air, does qualify for the front page of Slashdot?
If you have to ask... you must be new round here.. :-)

I will preface this by saying I don't know what charge they "convicted" the teenager of.
It's given in the article; Harassment

/.'d by a story with only 6 posts..?
Or are Vimeo.com really that afeared of the copyright mob?
"in order to continue to pursue the aggressors, they need to sacrifice a few people of their own?"
They have. 550 so far and counting...
Or are you one of these retards who thinks that Israel, as the invader and military occupier of Palestine for 40 years, is somehow not the aggressor?
So why the F**K do you keep sanctioning, insulting and invading other countries for being 'undemocratic'?
I ask in a spirit of pure enquiry :-)
