can you really be guaranteed that no imbalanced individual will ever read some innocuous thing you've posted online and want some retribution for a perceived offense?
Well no; but I once got attacked in the street (meatspace/reality) by an unbalanced person who didn't like my t-shirt, apparently it insulted their god. It didnt make me start wearing humourless t-shirts though, or put on a false beard / Guy Fawkes mask.
Indeed; boy I'm so dumb.. never saw that coming huh?
What's funny is how many people seem to take my belief that it is a good thing to have some non-anonymous places on the net as meaning I want to ban anonymity everywhere..
Then I realised; in fact everybody here, except one fat kid in NJ, agrees with me; and all the accounts ranting here are in fact sockpuppets of that one dork.
If you find that someone pointing out (with examples) the problems of pseudoanomity a bit 'Fascistic'.. how do you feel about the sentiment that a private website, run by a private company, can make whatever rules it fancies? And if it's users don't like them they can leave. Or do you want to impose rules on them; cos that sounds just a teency-weency bit fascistic to me..
Ah; a story on how hiding behind pseudonyms is no bad thing.. ..followed by a comment thread in which lots of people hiding behind pseudonyms insult each other in ways they would not do if their names were actually attached and the comments could follow them home.
many others have said, there's a distinct difference between shutting down communication mediums to stop people fighting for freedom from an oppresive regime, and shutting down communcation mediums to stop people from organising looting and other self-serving crimes.
That's what the Chinese say too.. and Mr Mubarak, the Bahrain medievalists etc.. they all say something just like that before trying to suppress riots caused by their states systemic failings.
20 years ago the same area erupted in rioting.. Those rioters used social networking rather than social media, they knocked on doors, chatted in groups, and then went off to find trouble. None of them had mobiles then.. didn't stop the riots. Political action and talking did that.
And in case you are thinking 'Of course it's bl***y cracked, it fell from thousands of feet' I would point you to the TFA where he notes it had a cracked screen -before- the accident, which just made it worse.
Kindles marketplace is plagued with low-quality books alright; but price is almost irrelevant. And the review/recommendation system so broken/spammed-out that it's an irrelevance. Nice idea; nice hardware; nice software; shame about the wetware really...
I did understand the article and the fact that it is a social science analysis.. That was not what I was commenting on (oh shock-horror, I was attacking the messenger; not the message).
This is being promoted by those who are good at 'one sided argument' to say that reason is somehow invalid as a form of argument. This is due to them lacking intelligence (reason) and only having weasel cunning and control of the media to fall back on.
ie: the article might well be right; but it will be used by the media muppets to argue that we have to take them seriously; no matter how unreasoned their stance is.
It figures; the media wonks want to attack the practice of 'reason' since it interferes with their manipulations.
Well; they can shove their tiny little minds and mouths up their copious arseholes...Reason is a tool that us clever people use to counter Idiots; especially the vocal paid-for astroturfing idiots who pop up everywhere doing what they are paid to do; destroy debate critical of their paymasters.
So; having given this article some reasoned consideration; I say 'screw all you media types; just because you are mentally incapable of using reason to make good decisions you will not stop me doing so. And the most satisfying reasoned action we will take is to tell you to fuck off... repeatedly."
I have seen articles on DM talk about how intersolar and intergalactic dust clouds have been accounted for but I dont know 'how'.
It may be that these bodies get accounted for in our current models since they will have a similar effect when observed at a distance; blocking light, affecting gravitational interactions and emitting radiation. So maybe these are already captured in the models and what we are seeing here is a refinement of what interstellar 'dust' is really composed of..
Of course the flip side of it is that we can generate enough noise of our own to render BPL unusable. Wifi, too - want to see how well your 50mW wifi router manages against my 400W 2.4GHz amp?
Yep.. I think most of us nerds round here do.. but we also know how easily cheap hand held equipment can locate the position of such a powerful transmitter with surprising speed and accuracy (having a 50ft radio mast in the back garden helps with this.)
After which it's just a question of contacting the relevant authorities with the data, and asking them to check the findings. They'll probably even give you a receipt as they enter your premises to seize the equipment, accompanied by the police and using force if necessary. In the UK no court order would be required, just the say so of the relevant Environmental department official. Shutting down and seizing rouge transmitters is something that happens surprisingly often, partly due to our influential friends in the music business being rather anti pirate radio.
Something to consider as you nurture your plans for revenge? yes/no?
Actually; it's the taxpayers who pay the bills. But I digress.
Anti-Eu campaigns always try to make you think your country pays more than 'its fair share'.. even for countries which are net recipients of EU money.
Anyway; Here is a list: The five biggest contributers are, in order, Germany, France, Italy, UK (after it's mail-in rebate) and the Netherlands. With the Dutch contribution 1/4 of that of Germany.
Completely get your point, but I guess if pushed I'd reserve 'battery' for something that is deliberately created and energized or charged up in one location for later release of the energy elsewhere.. It's different from a fuel where the energy is inherent and not added by a human agency, even if it all comes from the Sun originally (entropy, like pedantry. is a terrible thing).
Err.. that will be the Bayer process followed by the Hall–Héroult process.
Hall–Héroult process is the one where a vast amount of electrical energy is used to extract the Metallic Aluminium from the Alumina that is the end product of the Bayer process.. Typically plants doing this have their own power station (often Hydroelectric.. but Nuclear is used too) due to the energy required.
Not really very green huh.. it just displaces where the energy is input by several chemical steps.. The energy poured into making aluminium, is basically being extracted later on.
Essentially the Aluminium is being used like a battery.. not a fuel.
I purchased my Android handset.... So I did pay you, or someone like you, and you did not deliver... - Can I have a refund? ta? - If not, is there a professional organisation I can report you to so you lose your licence to program?
Please fix defects.. especially fix ones that affect other people. And fix them now. Ta. - You do realise that what you call 'bugs' are in fact 'defects'? dont you? and when you allow defects to exist in your code you are essentially saying 'I'm a low quality shit who cant be bothered to do it right' - And yes, I suppose I could learn how to program and then do and learn the DHCP code stuff and fix it myself, it would take some years but I could do it.. but that is a straw man; my dentist does not tell me to fix my own teeth.. nor does my hairdresser tell me to learn to cut my own hair. - But apparently programmers are a special type of person where quality is for low LOC loosers..

You don't want some random internet user coming to your home to make his point without using words.
Well; I rarely say things that might make them want to do that.. Do you find you have such a problem? Maybe it's the way you express yourself?
Pseudonymous usage does not == uncivil assholeishness.
I disagree; and I cite the Internet's finest authority to back me up in it's most famous cartoon:

"Patent expert Florian Mueller".
All the warning you need that this is lame. ... yawn. On to the next story.

I'm sure the devil will be in the detail. This is legislation designed to help the content Stazi, not hinder it.
'reporting' is probably too strong a word here; they probably just heard it in a FBI agents voice mail.

Welcome to the first sign that the Wunch of Bankers that lord it over us have spotted a threat..
Sensor is embedded in the CCD device, so that's actually a piece of tape over the camera lens.
It works.. for a given value of 'works'.

most people don't even recycle their aluminum soda cans.
Lots of places do, however, recover aluminium and other metals from the garbage as it gets incinerated/landfilled.
Sorry; I meant 'A very inefficient battery'.
Completely get your point, but I guess if pushed I'd reserve 'battery' for something that is deliberately created and energized or charged up in one location for later release of the energy elsewhere..
