It is one thing really bugs me about my PC at work, especially compared to the mac at home. It is very very rare that a macosx will bring itself in front of other.

There are two things that bug:

The biggest culprit for me is Citrix, I beleive that whenever an app in the citrix window asks to be brought to the front, then citrix brings itself to the front on my computer. Now when I run several different citrix sessions (admin/dev/support) this drives me nuts, especially when I am trying to resolve the problem by looking at something on my PC and also on the remote system.

The other time that it is annoying is when you are starting multiple apps. Each app take 3~5 second to lanuch and in that time I might start 4 or 5 apps, each app will then bring themselves to the front of the screen, slowest app winning. The mac doesn't do this, so when I start a bunch of apps (especially easy with the dock) I can start 10 apps and then click on Safari (browser) and I know that once I see the safari window on the screen no other app is going to push its way to the front.

Unfortunately the goverments in these countries are unable to pay for all the infrastructure etc that is needed.

The people in the IT sectors are making money for countries like India. The Indian government has put a lot of money into educating people and now the Indian IT sector is taking off. This will bring money into India and from those taxes generate revenue for the govt to pay for infrastructure etc. With a global economy Indian business men are just taking advantage of supply and demand, at present the supply side of things (heaps of people in India with IT skills) is larger than the demand (companies wanting to outsource) and therefore the price is dirt cheap.

You saw the same thing with steel and cars. I remember when if you were looking at cheap/crap electronics you could be guarenteed that it came from Taiwan. Over time the reputation of Taiwan has improved and higher value goods are being produced there. Cheap electronics now typically come from China. Same thing happened with cars and Japan. I would like to see the look on a car sales person face in 1980 if you told them that Japan would be producing some of the top of the line cars, and that Toyota and Honda would both have Formula 1 and Indy cars.

The iMac is only capable of 2gb of ram. I don't beleive that the G5 has more registers in 64 bit mode like the Athlon does to make things run faster. Therefore the difference between g4 and g5 at the same clock speed isn't as great as the difference between an Athlon XP and Athlon 64 as you are getting a swag of extra registers as well.

    Exactly

When I took my Mac away from home (Beige g3 at the time) Dad needed a new computer and couldn't face going back to the LC475.

I worked out the deal for him, iMac (G3 600 DV), printer, some software. While I was at work he went a picked it all up. When I got home that night he had set up the machine, installed MS Office (it is simply drag this folder to your hd for MacOS), was printing stuff without a problem. He then asked what needed to be done to the machine, the only thing needed to be done was pop the ram in (bought ram from a PC Shop instead of the original shop).

The same thing when Mum got a digital camera. The only difficult thing was finding where the cable went on the camera and what mode to set the camera in. After that you just open iPhoto and away you go. Again simple easy and no hassles if you are just using it for run of the mill stuff.

In all it is a brilliant initial experience for someone who has only limited computer skills.

I didn't buy the scanner, my Dad did. He bought one that worked with his current setup (OS9 this was in 2002) and MacOSX was out at the time and *all* of HP's scanner drivers were stated as drivers for MacOSX were in development. At that stage there were very few MacOSX drivers and neither the Epson or HP scanners that Dad was looking at had drivers (he wanted a mid price with transparency adaptor).

I sort of assumed that HP would forfill there promise that they would make their drivers available. And for that reason I will not buy HP products again.

My Dad has a 2 year old HP Scanner that he has hooked up to his iMac. Any chance of MacOSX drivers (even though it was being sold when MacOSX was released) nope, even though they promised them for a damn long time.

Supposedly the printer is USB but instead of putting a USB interface into the printer all they did is stuck a USB-->Parallel converter in the scanner. The problem with this is that because of the complicated usb-->parallel problems no one else (such as the guys who write Vuescan) can write drivers either.

Don't expect any support/drivers for the machine once the product is off the shelves.
