As an (one of the few?) Ubuntu LTS user; I welcome this. I am on 16.04 and had to look up that support ends at 2021; which by then I am fine with upgrading to another LTS version (next-next LTS of 20.04 would be out by then). So I think while 10 years support sounds good; in practice the current 5 years cycle is more practical and quite adequate.
While I agree in theory with you; I think in practice anything greater than 10 years is not practical. Providing support has a definite price to pay in terms of resources and providing for a decade is an extremely long time. Just think back to what the computing landscape by going back every 10 years ago will make this obvious.
Would like to see in the future for Microsoft to partner with Canonical and just sell Ubuntu laptop; MS can even buy Canonical if they wanted to. But for Linux to get mass adoption at the desktop level that would help a lot.
It is nowhere close to being the same though because windows doesn't cut it as a primary OS for those of us who cares about our OS; especially those of us working in system/devops/data engineering field where we want an actual linux-based OS.
Even if possible it is not quite enough; I want Microsoft to sell them with only Linux (probably Ubuntu distro) installed so I don't have to pay for copy of Windows and have hardware support. If other PC maker like Dell can do it; surely MS can. Although I guess currently the market share for Linux is pretty small but if MS partner with Canonical, I think they can legitimately take on Apple.
If MS does take then I will have zero reservation about MS's intention as a open source company.
Evolution is very unlikely to do the trick since selfishness is strongly correlated with the evolutionary fitness of an individual. A worker ant, for example, is almost selfless in relation to its colony but its evolutionary fitness to produce is exactly 0. Almost all biological entity have to compete for resources so some level of selfish is almost always needed.
The only mechanism that can offer a way out is genetic engineering but we are quite far from altering our selfishness; almost it will be laughable easy to abuse that technology unfortunately..
Amazon can just paid for all their hosting cost and Wikipedia should have zero expense. The $ going to Wikipedia ain't going to the editors, it is going to some board of directors and other big shot who probably doesn't even normally edit any article.
When Microsoft start selling Linux-only computer in their windows store. Only then I will consider Microsoft to be 100% committed to Linux. Although I have to admit, MS is already doing a lot of goods.
But almost all public infrastructure in USA are in very bad shape. USA got a D+ rating in 2017 from (ASCE) American Society of Civil Engineers https://www.infrastructurerepo...
If you actually want a 2FA you would probably have enabled it with your phone or possibly a physical key device (similar to this one). However this is a Bluetooth device and we all know how secure that is.
Google already self-censor to a large degree in the US by giving more weight to democratic-leaning stories. When the censorship is less obvious; it is often more effective.
If you think most people cannot form a coherent sentence in the form of an answer when under some level of stress? There is a pretty big difference between saying something while sounding nervous and talking gibberish.
When the MSM themselves are almost just as bad at fake news level and just as guilty of propaganda? Also can American think for themselves instead of have others dictate their worldview?
The former has the potential to wipe out humanity and is directly killing people. And while I don't support censorship either, in the US all the MSM practices self-censorship to various degrees and they don't even cross their party lines most of the times. The US MSM also effectively practice propaganda to only promote their own political version of reality; most American are too ignorant to know that they are brainwashed.
Most of these report are based off on US markets; and while private sectors in Canada doesn't pay as well as its US counterpart, you will find plenty of tech workers making the Ontario sunshine list each year making well over 100k
A pathetic comment like this get voted this high; come on slashdot have you really sink this low? Are there that many ignorant and hateful Americans on here?
Lol may as well write to Santa or God while you are at it; and at least with Santa you may get a generic reply back.
Raise fare, cut unnecessary/underused service and clean up the subway. It is disgusting.

Hell will freeze over before Oracle do any good; their corporate culture and legacy has been toxic.

And apparently $15/hr is $31,200/year. A lot of cars on the road has MSRP more than that..

Wake me up when US tech companies' activities cause a meltdown of the US economy; then we can talk about tech companies replacing the banks.
Good luck with that in USA where paid political lobbying is legal and corporations own the government.

I am thinking a strong yes.
A lot of C level executives made their pay in the form of stock since it is much more tax efficient.

You don't become white from driving a BMW but you do become an asshole.
