This fix is Windows specific for all versions... then, a huge list of bug fixes follows that are common to all platforms. There was talk yesterday of 2.0.45 to fix a bug that came up with the patch for the two Win 9x / ME bugs... they instead released a patch today for that specifically so it seems that 2.0.44 is here to stay for now.
That was my bug. It was pretty nasty. Apache would crash on startup.
I suppose running Apache on Win9x or ME is probably thought of as stupid, but I don't think anyone would be dumb enough to run on that platform as a production server. I think most of the people using Apache on 9x or ME are doing so instead of IIS or Personal Web Server... mainly for local testing in web development and programming.
I run Apache on Win98 for a couple of reasons:
1) My hacked version of PWS (IIS 3.something) scared the hell outta me.
2) *Someone* has to test Apache on Win98. Why?...
3) There are a lot of Win98 boxes in third-world countries. Those folks shouldn't have to pay to upgrade (if they only have MS skills) to XP or Win2K.
Win98 is pretty securable if you have a decent hardware firewall, and don't install a lot of crap on it. Stick with Moz for email, Cygwin for functionality and it's a pretty nice little machine.
If you plan on running 2.0.44 under Win9x/ME...

Kevin,
During your escapades which eventually landed you in hot water, you used the EFF account at The WELL to hide the files you stole from T. Shimomura. I'm still trying to figure out why the heck you did that. A simple "last" would have shown you that that was an active account, and you could have guessed that the user was probably technically savvy enough to notice the sudden spike in disk usage. Was that just an act of hacker hubris, or were you just not paying attention? Ultimately, it's what led to your downfall (FBI monitoring your keystrokes, live tracing of IP's) so I am well and truly curious.

Some years ago, I attended the Windows Refund Day in Foster City, Ca. and all I got was a VA Software T-Shirt, and not a lick of cash from MS. I may actually end up (in the end) getting something out of that action.
To quote from an an email I received this evening: "Feel free to spread the word about There by posting to online community sites, forums, or message boards you belong to!"
Sounds OK to me. So.... I was a contractor doing QA at There for a very brief period. I'd also been involved in a focus group for them prior to that.
Currently, I've been doing beta testing but my Windows box isn't up to spec, video card-wise. I think the vid card requirements are gonna kill them, unless they align with the folks that sell them and offer *massive* discounts. It was known over 16 months ago that these cards were required. I think that the "graceful degradation" solution should have been a priority.
Requiring IE for registration during the install and registration is just dumb. I haven't tried the second "private beta" yet but in the first Netscape, Moz or anything else on Windows just failed. It took a phone call and downloading IE to simply get registered. That's odd, because I remember a LOT of the folks (including QA) working in Linux, or at least using CLI stuff.
Lua is a nifty language, but requiring developers to learn something new is going to be a pain. I'd like to see (again) the API and SDK very soon.
There are some extremely talented people there. I wish I'd stayed. I wish I could go back, frankly. It wis a cool product, and visually and functionall stunning. And that was from a demo and testin 16 months ago. It has indeed gotten better since. I want the jet pack back. Hell with a hoverboard.
I wasn't too pleased with the internal alpha process (junior high kids) but it just might make it.
Don't be so sure. I use Moz 1.2.1 on Windows (yes, I know...) and looking at the about:plugins I've got some nasty MS DRM stuff in there. I'm assuming it's from installing a media player update (yes, I know...) but it's a bitch to get rid of.
Their shit gets everywhere, and is a pain to extract. If we don't resist, we will pay eventually.
Microsoft will settle out of court for "an undisclosed sum", buy Intertrust and subsume their patents. Thankfully, this will all take at least three years to wangle its way though the judicial system.
Because on single state (say, California) can take longer on a train end for end than most European countries? Canada is pretty huge too. That, and it isn't much cheaper.
That being said, I train to work. I'll also be taking to the train to Sacramento (from the SF Bay Area) and back over Christmas to avoid the hellish traffic and drunk drivers.
Gimme a mod point (or take one away) if you've ever seen any of the following bands, live.

I have. A LOT. In fact, I've been to so many Damned shows, Cpt. Sensible uses me as his smoke machine (as in, "hey Jim, can I bum a smoke?")
The list could go on and on. Growing up in L.A. in the late 70's was pretty fun. Hollywood was crazy, and we would go on jaunts to S.F. for some shows.
OK, I'm dating myself. Midlife crisis. I just turned 40, and so did all these guys, and most are older than me, BUT.... These bands (with the exception of some of the cheesier ones) are the ones than spawned the same music most people listen to today.
Actually, I could be wrong about this. The 571-628 prefix could also apply to an international number, but in Bogota, Columbia (!), not in Panama City. As I'm sure you know, Bogota is a real hotbed of professional Internet companies.

damn.
That's a nifty trick. FUD?
I'm sorry. You were using a Mac when you were 2 or 3 for artwork? Dang. Yeah, you'd be a good candidate.
Please put Schroedinger's Cat back in your pants, mister.
Sorry. A bit of gallows humour.

And finally (and IANAL) according to EDD I was not a contractor. I was an employee. I'm sure this is all quite boring, but......
Whoops. Gotta correct myself. They've known about the video card issue for at least 12 months, not 16. Just to be specific.

Strange, you'd think being based in the State of Washington, they'd have innovation all sewn up. :)

Which I'm guessing, is the outcome of what Sony licensed from TiVo?
I thought they kept the /. editors sequestered on the Eastern Coast of the U.S.
If anyone can digest (or download) these before the market closes, more power to 'em. :)
