Linus doesn't go around telling people what they should use and don't (unless its about kernel debuggers). Linus is an engineer and Richard is a politician. Theres a big difference there. From what I've read, Linus uses Red Hat. Even if he just uses the console in fullscreen mode, it doesn't make a difference. The point is that if RMS is going to go on about whats good and whats bad, he should at least have an idea what hes talking about.
Don't get me wrong, I believe in GNU. I just don't believe in how RMS treats the Linux kernel, as if its just some filler until the Hurd kernel is done. RMS needs to embrace the current OS movement, not just what was done 10 years ago. This includes Mozilla (MPL), X Windows (X11 License) and all the other Open Source bits and pieces that aren't GPL'd.

Thats crazy. I understand that you use what you know, but this is a guy who is using emacs as his windowing system. Kind of changes my opinion of him as an all knowing guru.

Note: I'm not dissing his abilities or role in history. He has done shit that most of us could never come close to surpassing. Its just amazing to see how little things have changed for him in the last 10 years.

Liable for damages yes. Unfair punishment, no. Suing somebody for $90 billion is incredibly stupid, no matter what kind of demented logic you use.

Ever been sued / looked at the inital claim in a lawsuit? Any plausible method of counting or claiming gets used to be in the claimant's best interest.

This is unethical and borderlines fraud.

Which makes them somehow unable to defend their interest now? Just because someone's a child molester doesn't deprive them of their freedom of speech. (Freedom of anonymnity, sure, but not speech.)

They can say what they want but they are not above the law. If they were fair to their customers this never would have happened. Just as you said, the iPod model will probably kill off P2P which is a good thing. If the RIAA had done this earlier or properly priced cds then this blackmarket would never have shown up in the first place.

They have sued college students for $90 billion and settled for $17 thousand which is still way too much.
They count 50 cd burners at faster speeds to be 420 burners for statistic purposes.
They have been proven guilty of illegal cd price fixing and screwing the consumer.

All in all, anything they do doesn't really surprise me anymore. I think the only actual thing that would shock me would be something like:

"The New York Times is reporting that the RIAA is giving away $5000 worth of free cds to every person in this country who ever purchased a cd. They also are responsible for puppies, ice cream and rainbows."

    • Create fancy webpage with fancy drawings on napkins. It also helps to put some mathematical formulas on them.
    • Come up with a cool name. The cooler the name the better, I can't emphasize this enough.
    • Go to Walmart and buy some tupper-ware, garden hoses (roughly 200 feet), and gas containers.
    • Build something resembling a space vehicle out of said parts.
    • Make sure to say on your website: "Our designs take into affect safety in a cost effective way. We have privately tested our craft and it is technologically sound. However, We regret that without more funding we will no longer be able to provide a convenient, easy and safe way to put people into space on their terms."
    • Provide a donation and VC link on the bottom.

Now sit back and watch the funding come in. You too can have a space program for only a $100 investment.

I wonder if this is what Red Hat is doing because Mandrake is coming out with 9.1 soon. I'd really like to know if the benefits in 9 will be great enough to justify this jump.
