...Free/Open Source software advocates have been claiming for years that Open Software is superior to Microsoft's offerings in more ways than just price - yet now you want to complain when Microsoft tests that assertion?
That would be great if Microsoft wasn't already a monopoly. Once you gain that power, you play by different rules. In this case, you do not give away software way under market value to maintain your market share. Thats a big no no.
They want to be a monopoly on the desktop thats fine. They can do that. But they can not use it to pimp the rest of their products. Giving IE free is/was ok. Bundling it with Windows is not.
Thats the difference. If Red Hat was doing this, it would be perfectly fine. If Red Hat was in Microsoft's position, it wouldn't be.
It most definitly should matter if the perpetrator is a cop. There is the concept of "high crimes", where someone in a position of authority can do more damage and more easily cover up evidence, should he or she be a criminal.
Context my dear boy, context. The article was about violence towards cops in video games. A hate crime is a crime against someone else who is different. I'm talking about a crime here against a cop. Not by a cop. Theres a big difference.
If you're white and you beat up a black person, its a hate crime. If you're white and beat up another white, its just assault and battery.
Stuff like this is stupid. All violent crimes are a crime of hate. It shouldn't matter if they're black, gay or a cop. However I'm glad they can make a distinction that a cop's life is more valuable than someone elses *rolls eyes*.
On a modern OS none of that should crash it, assuming you have the hardware to handle it. On my desktop I used to try some stress testing in Windows 2000 and Linux (2.4 kernel). Basically I'd play a dvd, launch a couple divx movies, a couple quicktime movies, open up OpenOffice and mozilla. That right there should of dragged the OS to its knees, but it didn't. Granted this is a dual processor machine but both OS's remained very responsive, even with the CPUs pegged at 100%.
Ok you're right, its probably not 98%. But this article is very informative about the matter. For the most part we share at least 25% with all living things and its probably significiently higher.
Insightful part: Once again, the DNA comparison requires context to be meaningful. Granted that a human and ape are over 98% genetically identical, a human and any earthly DNA-based life form must be at least 25% identical. A human and a daffodil share common ancestry and their DNA is thus obliged to match more than 25% of the time. For the sake of argument let's say 33%.
The point is that to say we are one-third daffodils because our DNA matches that of a daffodil 33% of the time, is not profound, it's ridiculous. There is hardly any biological comparison you can make which will find us to be one-third daffodil, except perhaps the DNA.
From what I understand, we share 98%-99% DNA with just about every living creature. I think I remember seeing that frogs share 98% with us. It seems that 99% of DNA is just basic stuff... its that other 1% that makes things different.
Sun has more market share, extreme java expertise and a full range of machines to choose from, so I think they have a much better chance than SGI did.
Better than SGI, yes. Good enough to beat IBM, no. If theres one company that has done more for Java than Sun, its IBM. Their JVM smokes Sun's in performance, and SWT is incredible compared to Swing. I wouldn't be surprised if IBM employed the most java programmers out of anyone in the world (I used to be a co-op java programmer at IBM). Most internal IBM apps are written in Java and those that aren't will be eventually.
I'm not saying that Sun is going to die, but unless you're Microsoft you're not going to take on IBM and win. Especially if you're going to keep changing your mind on what you're company is doing.
AtheOS is dead. All work is now being done on Syllable which is progressing nicely (we now finally have cd support, tabbed browsing, mplayer, etc).
Syllable isn't nearly as feature full as Linux yet, but its a good start. On the mailing list we actually discussed the implimications of the SCO suit and while there is some Linux code in our own (mostly drivers, video, audio, etc), we don't feel its a problem. Any code that is offending isn't likely to show up in Syllable, and if it does we can just do a clean rewrite of it.
First issue: The PS2 hardware is incredible. I'd like to see you come up with something that only has 32 megs of ram but can do Final Fantasy X and Dark Cloud 2. Considering how old the PS2 is, its impressive what Sony and friends have done with it. The PS2 is original in its design... there aren't many if any platforms like it. The Xbox is a pc (Intel/Nvidia) and the GameCube is a Mac (PPC/Ati).
There are a couple of reasons why the PS2 outsold everything else by a wide margin:
1) It supported PS1 games which had been the winning console in the previous generation. A game library of 600+ goes a long way to selling well.
2) It was released a year or so earlier than both the XBOX and GameCube.
Next part where you just spout off some crap that just isn't true:
Nintendo, the oldest of the current crop, has true market force only among young children
This is bullshit. You know, I know the other readers damn well should know. I'm 22, I own I GameCube and a PS2. Which one do I play more? When I have people over... which one do you think gets dragged out? Let me tell you... its the GameCube. There are very few 4 way muliplayer games that compare to Super Smash Bros Melee and Bomberman. Fragging games are overated... they all are the same (although Halo is excellent). Its no fun playing with 4 people on a 20 inch television, unless you all share the same screen.
Zelda Wind Waker was awesome. One of the best games maybe ever done... and the Zelda series may be the best video games series this side of Final Fantasy. I know people from the ages of 7 to 45 who loved it. Nintendo has always made excellent games. Pikman is excellent. The Mario series is probably the top selling video game series of all time. Donkey Kong and Star Fox. Have you even seen Metroid? Sega never even came close to matching the originality of Nintendo, hence why they just make games now (along with the fact that they couldn't sell Jesus to a Christian, stupid marketing...).
The more I read your post, the more I think you're just an idiot. The only impressive thing about it is that you managed to get moderated up to 5.
though I have no doubt that micro_http, the web server I am using (said to be the world's smallest), will result in the quickest Slashdotting in history
Then why the hell did you post it? People have real servers that can't survive the Slashdot effect... Then again its gonna be cool watching the dreamcast's framerate drop to one frame per hour.
Agreed, I personally find Kennywood to better than the 6 flags parks. However don't forget about the Steel Phantom which at the time it was built in Kennywood was the fastest roller coaster in the world and had the steepest fall.
But if you like old style wooden coasters try the Thunderbolt whose path crosses right over the Phantom's while doing 50 mph on an old rickety wooden track.
Is the Phantom still there for anyone thats been there recently? I haven't been back there for a couple of years and I think I remember somebody saying that they took it down.
I think it may be possible for him to start yelling about it but not possible to actually do anything about it. The only way for him to do this is to make sure that the users have to have pop ups turned on, ie: No pop ups, no content.
From a dmca standpoint it is kind of similiar to when watching tv you get up and go to the bathroom or go to the 'fridge when commercials come on. You can't force somebody to view them.
If it really did become a dmca issue then all browser developers would have to do is completely ignore the part of java script that opens windows. If you leave out part of the http rfc then oh well;), nothing they can do about it. And once enough people's browsers don't support opening new windows through html/js they lose the reason to even have pop ups in the first place.
This in return would probably kill the whole advertising as a business model thing and send WWW back to information when you want it. Instead of information when they want to give it to you.
Altivec is a joint venture between IBM, Motorola and Apple. Hence why IBM was making G3s also, but Apple used the Motorola ones due to marketing reasons. Basically IBM had G3s running at 1 gig + but due to Apples "Speed isn't important" marketing it seemed rather silly to switch to the much faster (clock wise) IBM processor.
Altivec was originally designed by all 3 companies.
They do, its called galaxy. Check your facts the next time you post something like this. In my opinion galaxy is just as nice as bluecurve.
No, not really ;).

From SNL:
"Thats all the time we have. Join us next week with our guest Albert Einstein."
[Man whispers into Caray's ear]
"Well apparently Alber Einstein died 42 years ago. You know what, we'll try to get him anyway. See you next time."

Give me a copy of the Windows source code, a baseball bat and ten minutes alone with the PHB, and
you will have your Open Source.
