    Why do you view the BIOS as being able to do nothing without the host os?

    If the BIOS pings a server using the onboard nic before it tries to bootstrap to a drive, it would be very difficult to disable this...

    Wow... I've never though of recompilation of the kernel as a good thing.

    Wait, I still don't.

    By and large, I'd say atleast 75% of the GNU/Linux users I know abhor recompiling the kernel. Especially because of two things:

    1. New Hardware requires a rebuild frequently.
    2. The "Help" function has the worst documentation possible. I'd be willing to rewrite the exceptionally shitty help dialogues if I could ever figure out what the F they were.

    I've been meaning to email you and tell you - thank you so much for the Linux port! Unreal Tournament 2003 runs about 5-10 times quicker on Debian GNU/Linux than Windows 98SE (and Windows is on the faster drive.)

    5 - 10 TIMES FASTER? Linux gives you a performance increase of 500% to 1000%??? I'd love to see some benchmarks on that.

    OK, time to blow some karma but "stronghold on high-end computers?" Linux?

    I'm sorry, but that is blatently false.

    Everyplace I've seen/worked at/heard about uses the following:

    Real Unix for the high-end stuff
    Windows for the middle tier stuff
    Linux (if at all) for the low tier, security type stuff (possibly filesharing but mostly firewalling)

    Remember, your water cooled athlon does not equal a high-end computer!

    I believe he meant that there wasn't a command line app that he could schedule through windows task scheduler.

    For instance, it was nigh impossible to easily schedule disk defrags under 2000 using task manager because there was no way to kick off the defrag automatically. In XP this was resolved with the command line tool "defrag".

    So let me get this straight. Your Dad asks you to help him pick out a virus checker, since he know's that he does not have the knowledge to. You tell him to stop using a product he wants to use and DON'T HELP HIM FIND A VIRUS CHECKER? And then you have the audacity to blame him when he gets a virus?

    He learned from the experience. He learned not to rely on his son because his son's irrational hatred of Microsoft left him out in the cold when he asked for help finding a virus checker.

    Well, I think you are missing a point.

    "Okay, God is perfect and we're told It will never choose to do evil. So, does God have free will?"

    Most religious people tend to define evil as opposing the will of God. God doesn't want us to murder, so murdering is evil, etc. So, IMHO, it is impossible for God to do evil since evil is defined by what God does not want to be done.

    Move Inetpub to a drive other than the one that contains \Winnt

    Move 'exploitable' executables out of the path (i.e. cmd.exe, tftp.exe, etc.). There is alot of relevant information on securing IIS 5.0 on the IIS 4.0 checklist.

    There is alot that can be done to tighten an IIS server to the point that exploitation is close to impossible. If you are being owned 8 times in a week, either your config is not secure or else there are security issues on the site itself. I am assuming you are building the server OFF the network and installing the patches from a trusted CD-ROM.

    You don't need this to support MS's Remote Desktop Client...

    rdesktop has been doing this for a while. Try it at http://www.rdesktop.org/. I use it to connect to Windows 2000 servers and Terminal Services servers without any problems. If I remember correctly, XPs RDC is the same protocol as the aforementioned products.

    Give it a shot.

    I'll tell you why. When you're playing pingpong at the rec center, can you cause the ball to catch on fire, split into three, grow to the size of a beachball, speed up, slow down, teleport, wiggle, or otherwise behave in novel ways?

    Hmmmm... I guess you could if you played Ping Pong while under the influence... a Ping Pong Drug Game!

    Player 1: I just hit the blue circle on the table with the ball, take the blue pill.
