    I got a letter in the mail today from Monoprice, saying that they had recently been hacked, and that a transaction I had with them feel within the window of lost data (credit card number, name, address, AND phone number??? Seriously, there is NO REASON for them to be storing this data "in their database"). I immediately called my bank to cancel my debit card, and while I was on the phone had them check to see if there were any pending transactions. Lo and behold, there were over 20 transactions TODAY for Blizzard Entertainment, for amounts ranging from $14.99 to $25. Also a couple of $1 charges to the Apple Online Store, probably to verify that the card was still good.

    So I assume some criminal gang stole the CC numbers, then planned to rack up a bunch of WOW time to re-sell? Or something?

    I've been using a standing-height desk (with a rubber mat to stand on) for several years. After a couple of weeks, you get used to it. I used to have a tall chair to use occasionally, but I don't bother with it anymore.

    I started standing at work because I herniated a disk, and standing felt better than sitting. But I've kept it up because it feels better for me. Another benefit is that when you're standing, your posture is better. I found that when I slouched when sitting, I had nerve pain in my arm using the mouse. I don't get that when standing...

  23. Re:The Rubber sheet analogy is WRONG!!! on Giant Sheets Of Dark Matter Detected · · Score: 0

    This is something I've been thinking about for a while myself (not trying to say I thought of it first, just that great minds think alike!)

    Instead of your rubber sheet stretched over the pool metaphor (which I like, by the way), I was thinking more along the lines of gravity being viewed as a standing wave. Using the bowling ball on the rubber sheet again, in the original analogy the bowling ball pulls the sheet down from an initially flat state, and all movement of the sheet (gravitational attraction) is down. In the "standing wave" version, the bowling ball sits in the trough of the gravitational wave (the sheet is pulled down), and the peak of the wave causes the sheet to rise slightly above its initial position (gravitational repulsion), at some distance away from the ball. The wave fades rapidly over distance, such that the initial trough (centered at the mass that is creating the wave) is much larger than the first crest, which is much larger than the next trough, which is much larger than the next crest, etc. At local scales, you'd never detect the crests. And of course, the standing gravitational wave propagates away from the mass that created it in three dimensions.

    Both analogies (sheet stretched over the pool, and standing wave) describe the same idea, I think.

  25. Re:Polarity on The Energy of Empty Space != Zero · · Score: 0

    At the risk of further irritating MustardMan, I've had an idea about gravity floating around in my head for a while now...

    We're all familiar with the illustration of a gravity well as a bowling ball sitting on a rubber sheet; the rubber stretches and the ball sinks, representing space/time being warped by the mass of the bowling ball. What if, instead of warping space/time only towards the mass, gravity is actually a manifestation of a standing wave in space/time? Picture a waveform that does not have an equal trough and crest; the trough is much larger. The mass sits at the trough of the waveform, and locally space/time is warped towards the mass. But at the "crest" of the wave, there would actually be a slight anti-gravity effect.

    Of course this is just idle speculation, and there are probably lots of reasons why this couldn't work/has already been ruled out...
