Apple has always used custom ROMs aboard which the most basic portion of Mac OS has always resided. To my knowledge, which I admit is a bit dated, even G5-based Macs use a proprietary ROM tailored for Mac OS.

Apple stopped using those ROMs several years ago, I believe when they made the transition from m68k to PPC. There's actually a ROM image of the old Mac toolbox ROM on the hard disk (I think Classic MacOS used it).

As for a BIOS, modern Macs have all used Open Firmware. Sun also uses this, and apparently IBM, if what I read earlier is in fact true. Sadly, I've read that Apple has stated the new Macs will NOT use Open Firmware. The dev systems are using a crappy Phoenix BIOS, but I'm hoping the actual released systems will use Intel's EFI, or something similar to Open Firmware.

I think the vast majority of apps written to take advantage of the Altivec unit was pretty low, and of those, the number that could NOT be re-written to target SSE2/SSE3 instead, and achieve similar performance, was lower still.

I can't even find any mention of Altivec on the Powermac G5 page anymore.

Apple loved to pull Phil Schiller onstage to do side-by-side speed tests showing how much faster in real life the G4s and G5s were than their Pentium equivalents. Was that so much BS?

Not really. But, how many things REALLY take such advantage of Altivec that its worth keeping it around?

yet Intel's 64-bit chips -- Xeon and Itanium -- are high buck items aimed at servers, not iMacs.

Someone wanna tell this guy about EM64T?

    Where the heck is AMD?

Maybe Apple talked to AMD, and Intel offered a better deal. Maybe Apple wanted to ensure there'd be no supply problems (I'm sure Intel fabs a lot more CPUs than AMD does).

Why announce this chip swap a year before it will even begin for customers?

I wondered about this one too. Especially after Jobs showed how easy it is to port apps.

Is this all really about Digital Rights Management?

Gah! I sure as hell hope not!

The vaunted Intel roadmap is nice, but no nicer than the AMD roadmap, and nothing that IBM couldn't have matched.

Could have, but would they? I sincerely doubt it. IBM is more interested in all the CPUs they're going to put into the next generation gaming consoles. They'll sell far more CPUs, AND they won't even have to worry about making them faster.

Enter Apple. This isn't a story about Intel gaining another three percent market share at the expense of IBM, it is about Intel taking back control of the desktop from Microsoft.

    That'd be sweet.

what Apple really needs to do is to port Xcode and Cocoa to Windows and Linux, and get developers on those platforms to write applications to their APIs, and allow existing Xcode developers create apps which will run on Windows and Linux.

Several years ago, NeXT ported the OpenStep APIs to Windows (and other platforms). I wonder if Apple has been keeping that port up to date too, along with their OS X x86 port.

A GOOD reason for a port!

It IS a good reason - remember the days when everyone coded for IE, and pages looked like shit in Netscape? I'd rather NOT go back to that.

Just because Safari doesn't have a huge percentage of the userbase doesn't mean web developers shoudln't ensure their code looks good on it.

Nah, the last thing we need is something like Safari cluttering things up. Mac users hang onto it for the same reason most windows users use IE, it's what came with the OS. I cant see anyone switching TO Safari if it wasn't preinstalled.

Web designers could use it to test for Safari compatibility. Mac users could use it on their Windows PC at work, for familiarity. Maybe some people just want a KHTML-based browser. Choice is always good.
