Although the years have treated them well, and they don't look a day older, the fact is that at this point, Bart is 30 and Lisa is 28, minimum. They haven't been minors for a decade or so. Even Maggie, at this point, would be at least 20.

If the stuff you're writing is that easy to implement that every addition or extension is being copied, and is "just as good" as you say, then the issue is with the code you're writing.

The Open Source devs trying to mimic your extensions should be sitting back saying to themselves "how the hell did they do that?" and by the time they figure it out, you've already got new features that they don't.

Also, providing support seems to be the best way to monetize Open Source. They may provide similar functionality, but you can offer custom tweaks and support for a fee.

The truth is, Theora takes much more processing power to decode than h264. It can't match the quality of h264 when compressed to the same size. Beyond that, there are HARDWARE h264 decoder chips that require little power for use in mobile devices, not so with Theora.

Free and open formats are awesome. But sometimes, just sometimes, being free and open isn't as important as being efficient and portable. Its about priorities and usefulness in the broader market. Theora has no traction in the mobile space. there is no indication it will surpass h264 in quality at similar file sizes.

what good is a free and open video codec if it requires more disk space, more processing power, and has no ability to be offloaded to a specialized chip in a mobile device?

If you want companies to adopt Theora, fix those issues. That's the benefit of open and free software. You are free and open to make it better until it meets the demands of the marketplace.

Not sure why you would have that impression, or why responding to stimuli quickly is inherently bad. Our brain determines our decisions before we are consciously aware of it. Perhaps your overanalyzation is reflective of insecurity or maybe its a stalling attempt. Either way, you obviously didn't think before you posted. Rather, you reacted quickly to stimuli.

I would say that a network is, by design, a shared interdependancy. Selfish network behavior, regardless of that activity's legality, is a detriment to the entire system, while simultaneously making it harder to maintain, support, and manage.

Look, I'm not for legislation, but a little common sense will tell you that it simply isn't right for a small minority of the customers to use a massive percentage of available bandwidth, using applications that they themselves say wreak havok on their local network.

You speak of not providing people with what they've paid for. How about all those next gen services we want rolled out, how will they ensure they can manage network traffic fairly when all users need a much bigger chunk of bandwidth for standard services? If P2P users can't keep in mind the rights of those not using the same torrent, or their responsibility to be good network neighbors when they KNOW their activity disrupts others, they have no reason to expect the same courtesy. A free Internet only works if there's respect.

If there's no respect, that's when you wind up with silly things like legislation.

The geeks of slashdot acknowledge that P2P use strangles traffic on their LAN, and feel that some modification needs to happen to address this.

However, when service providers complain about the negative effects of millions of people using P2P on their backbones, and take action to correct this, same said slashdot geeks get their panties in a bunch and cry fowl.

I'm not taking one position over another. I'm just saying that I think this may be a big reveal about why a lot of norms have a strong mistrust and/or dislike of geeks. A lot of the time moral outrage is claimed when in fact it looks more like self interest.

What isn't a secret is that the president, leaders of both the democratic and republican parties, most of the heads of major media, telecom, and military industry companies, along with foreign dignitaries, royalty, the heads of the world's financial institutions all belong to club of sorts. They all kinda hang out, in various groups and circles, under various names, but all interrelated and entwined. Some of these clubs are The Bohemian Club, The Bilderberg Group, The Council on Foreign Relations, The Trilateral Commission, Project for a New American Century, and the list goes on.

What isn't a secret is that they're very hostile towards one another when the cameras are rolling, and quite chummy behind closed doors. Where we can't hear what they're talking about as they decide all of our futures.

"The President made me do it" is simply a lie. It was deliberate collusion, and if they were that concerned about the legality, they could have gone public at any time. No where in the Constitution does it give any government agency the right to try to subvert the law behind closed doors.

Prosecute any and all telecoms involved with domestic wiretapping in violation of our rights. It is intolerable that our government and utility suppliers would use our own money against us in such a blatantly illegal way. Prosecute any and all federal agents that were involved in the planning and execution of this violation of our rights.

They work for us. They get their money from us. They exist to serve us. Without us they are nothing. Its about time we started acting like it.

They wouldn't be so worried about immunity if they didn't already know they're guilty of something REALLY BAD.

And they do not have a right to keep it a secret from those that were wronged. Those who hold the secrets hold the power. They want to know all of our secrets. Shouldn't we know theirs?
