Looking forward to Square's version of a Fire Fighter simulation that was showcased at the GDC Serious games summitt last year but with Final Fantasy characters. They should call it Final Fantasy Fire Fighters or FFFF for short!
I don't know about you, but every single Seagate HDD I've tested, both brand new and used give a lot of seek errors way above the SMART margin if you run SpinRite 6.0. I've experienced Seagate HDDs simply failing because of too many logged seek/ECC errors and Windows will freeze as it initially loads. I have never seen this type of perfomance with Samsung, WD, Fujitsu (SCSI) and Hitachi HDDs. Sure, not all hard drives are perfect but in my experience, Seagates have always given me problems to the point where I simply don't recommend them anymore.
You'd be suprised on how many file server farms I have helped built for some 'organizations' out there that have about a cool 50TB of storage space. Now with Hitachi getting ready to release a 1TB HDD. The pirate now has the cheap storage solution to house hundreds of HD movies. Expect to see the first Blu-Ray torrent to popup soon as some people in PS3news.com have been able to dump a whole BR disc.
Hollywood is spending billions on DRMs while the pirates are spending just tens of thousands of dollars on figuring out ways to crack the next DRM.
Really, do you wish to explain the existance of the Dell Optiplex 740 then? Shares the same BTX chassis options as the 745 which is the Core2 Duo option as well as the rest of the Optiplex lineup. Thing is the 740 is Dell's AMD offering for businesses. My bad. I completely left that system out as well as some other BTX form factor boards but did those boards really sell? I know the 740 is selling since Dell is pushing the BTX form factor towards business clientel. Manufacturers, in the past few months have been dropping that standard since it hasn't been selling well.
With AMD now announcing this new form factor. They can take a look at what made the BTX standard fail. I just hope AMD doesn't do what Intel did that limited the BTX standard and that is to not shut out Intel from the DTX standard. The BTX was strictly for Intel CPUs since the 775 socket. The BTX was lay out was to simply have the CPU near the front of the desktop where the cool air enters the computer. THis was possible since the 775 CPUs still utilizes a northbridge to communicate with the memory. AMD couldn't apply itself to the BTX since its memory controller is on the CPU. DTX should allow Intel to be able to apply itself towards the standard if they want to see third party board makers and chipset makers create products for the DTX. If AMD achieves that, then the DTX has a chance taking over ATX.
The ATX is just way out of date but soo common and cheap that manufacturers continue to utilize it.
It is about time a big company like AMD, and soon Intel (they haven't officially announced any plans to start focusing on more efficient products), start focusing more on energy efficiency right next to better processing power.
Way ahead of you. My contact in Iran are going to be happy. Their frozen accounts can be easily recreated and turned back into real money!
The Arab community wants cultural balance in games
on
On Being a Gamer in Iraq
·
· Score: 3, Insightful
This reminds of a show I saw on Discovery HD Saturday. Part of the show they talked about how US games are viewed in the middle east. It mainly talked about FPS games and how a lot of them show arabs as the weak enemy and that there is one company in Syria (funded by the gov't) that developed a game where Israeli soilders are seen as the enemy and the game is based on actual events in history.
This article here, along with the show I saw, goes to show that there is a big cultural imbalance in games. A lot of the kids who play FPS will gain a basic understanding (especially if they do poorly in their class-work) that all arabs are terrorists and are thus our enemy. This is, of course, not true. This current protrayal of other cultures will harm us, America, now and in the future if America wants peace over in the Middle East and in the world around us.
So as long as this current trend continues, expect to see future games depicting Arabs overthrowing our government, a game depicting WW2 where the Nazis win and the Holocaust never occured, and so on and so forth.
Seagate!?!? Expect lot of HDD errors. I can open up every single, brand new seagate hard drive I have in stock where I work (small family owned system builder) and by using SpinRite 6.0 it will tell me the plethora of seek errors and ECC errors this hard drive is causing when you do a SMART status report. Of course, when you use Seagates diagnostic software it will tell you that the hard drive is working fine. It does work fine, for now. I went thru 2 seagate HDDs, both 7200.9 and 7200.7. Both of those, kept giving me eccerrors according to the SMART status report. The 7200.7 HDD just started to be really slow in accessing data. When it would use to take me 2 minutes to boot Windows off of it it, it takes over 5minutes, and it was the HDD that was causing the problem. Seagate is notorious for this as I am finding out. I am no longer recommending seagates, even though they have a long warranty but don't expect the HDD to even last within that warranty if you plan on using it for RAID purposes.
I'd go with Samsung, and Western Digitals. I'll even say to try out hitachi HDDs even though they are loud. Don't buy seagate unless you want an HDD that will degrade over time over regular usage.
Back in the late 19th century in the victorian age. It was widely preached that the mentally disabled had to be sterilized so that their 'bad' genes and disorders will not be passed on and reappear in future generations. HEre is a link about it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eugenics
The eugenics philosophy ultimately failed because even though its purpose is to lessen human suffering in the future, it required human suffering in the present.
This study being done by the british is just wrong. Although their intent is to better society by lowering crime rates, but the way their 'solution' is all wrong. This study parallels with Hitler's Mein Kampf where he elaborately blames all the downfalls, the crimes, etc on the Jews and Gypsies, as well as the Eugenics movement. Both of these involved seperating the inferiors (in this case, the people with disabilities), and then containing them in facilities away from the 'normal' people.
Its sad to see that people out there think relatively to such old evil ways.
I use ebay but not often so correct me if I'm wrong. When I signed up I couldnt use the Buy It Now option because I didn't have enough feedback. You need a certain amount before you can use it. I believe that ebay express allowed the new seller to sell items at a fixed price at zero feedback and a lower fee than the buy it now option.
If you don't like them, then why not just modify the level to cover up the ad with a texture or something? There are tons of custom levels out there that I'm sure Valve wont touch simply because the work involved would be a waste of money for them.
Nothing new to see here folks, just a man talking out of his ass again. Nothing but hot air.
Consoles will get to the point where they are almost the same in architecture. The gamecube is based off of a PowerPC 'gekko' cpu, the Xbox360 is based off of a PowerPC architecture that is triple core? And now Sony's 'Cell' CPU is now based off of powerPC architecture. Before you know it these are all just typical PCs but in different cases!
However, in a funnier note. I believe Nintendo's next console will be a deck of playing cards simply because they keep re-hashing their flagship titles over and over again for each generation. SO they are reverting to the things they used to sell from the very, very beginning!
If you disagree with this law or feel it isn't necessary then you are giving gas to the car that is the exploitation of children. Might as well support child furry-porn, or furries in general, or zoophiles, and child labor. There are a lot of sick people out there and there are steps needed to be taken in order to stop such retardation from spreading!
As long as this law doesn't breach the rights of law-abiding citizens, then I'm all for it. I believe the canadian government fully reviewed this law so that it was as impartial as it can be and does not affect those who are already innocent.
Giving them the option to sell the stock publicly is alright. However, it is still an unsecure benefit. Companies today are giving their employees more riskier benefits. Its like giving lottery tickets as a christmas gift. This stock option is similar to that. What if now Googles stock starts to drop and stays well below the price it is now? Then the employees have lost a lot of money in that investment and end up selling at a low price to institutions like Morgan Stanley, etc. Who can then turn around and demand employee layoffs with the low stock price and threaten takeover if those instutions have a controlling stake in the company.
This is a growing trend for companies nowadays, where they give their employees less benefits (thus decreasing company loyalty, and it is why you have rampant corporate espionage today) while execs keep giving themeselves cash-benefits and an 'fallout shelter' incase of a financial collapse of the company (ie Enron). This isn't a gift, its a slap in the face to the employee! It purely says, "hey! we're giving you the option of selling the stock if and when it starts to go down! You know what they say when stocks start dropping for a company, right? Layoffs! So, having this option is actually neccesary for when we lay you off because you will need all the money you can get from that stock to feed you family. Oh but wait, don't forget the dividends tax! Sure your all the stock you own might be worth $5,000 but with it being that small you pay a high dividend-tax when you sell thanks to Bush passing that law in 2001! Have a nice day!"
Where have ethics gone? Corporate America used to have it but it lost it somewhere in mid 90s.
Thats exactly what I did a couple of months ago. I took about 60+ CDRs filled with data that I've backed up in the past 4 years and put them all on DVD+R. Now I onlly have about 10 DVD+Rs instead of 60CDRs.
But yeh. Not only as long as you 'upgrade' to different, newer media, but also diverse your methods of backing up, like printing out documents, printing photos, etc. As long as you do that, you can expect to keep your data for a full lifetime. NOw if you really want it to last forever, then what you do is, store it all in a lead container filled witn Nitrogen and have 10%humidity and in 40degrees Faren. That will surely last for thousands of years. All that matters is if they have the equipment to read the data hundreds of years from now.
Taiyo Yuden All the way. They are great for copying PSX/PS2 games (seriously) where media quality makes a difference between burning out a laser or playing your back-up game, as well as DVD Movies.
The only drawback is that you can only order them from the Internet. I do not know of any retail store who actually sells the brand outright nor do I know of any brand (like Sony, Memorex, Fujifilm) who sells rebranded Taiyo Yuden discs.
Also, the Taiyo brand is more expensive than any other brand.
Of all the media players that do not have spyware and don't take up a bloated process load, why real player? Are there any links to formats that will work with Media player like.wmv, mpg, etc?? I'd appreciate it!
MS still has a high market share. That means that 9 out of 10 companies are using MS. Each of those companies have money. They have data that can be used against them to generate profit for their competitors or some other party.
No matter what OS you use, you will have security issues. Just because Open Source has its code open to the public does not make it secure! All it takes is a smart individual to create a piece of code that looks very legit among the OSS community but in actuallity that code's purpose is malicious. It will be very hard to track something like that if it is embedded in the kernel. You just don't know. The same goes for proprietary (not closed source, geez, use the right terminology). Just because the code is hidden does not make it secure. Having a proprietary software owned by one company, is in fact, better, from a business standpoint. Think about it, if X-software conglomerate who develops a proprietary OS was actually inserting malicious code to exploit their clients data that single company is held liable for that crime and be punished for it. However, if you have a piece of software developed by anonymous people located throughout the world and one of them inserted a piece of code with the intent to exploit sensitive data, it is much harder to hold that person accountable because there is no papertrail. it will be difficult for the victim to recuperate some of their lost revenue due to the intended-exploit. Basically, no one can be held accountable. The criminal is more likely to get away with it.
As more companies switch over to Open Source for security reasons, they will soon start to see same attacks or exploits they've encountered under proprietary software.
Numerous behavioral and cognitive studies have linked exposure to violent media and aggressive behavior." Numerous studies have said just the opposite, too.
There are far more studies that link violent media to aggressive behavior (and I'm talking about true, scientific study, not something dones by Christian Science, etc) than there are of those that disprove it. I'm willing to admit that ever since I've gotten heavily into FPS games my temper for things has changed a bit to where I have to control myself so as not to get into deep s**t especially while driving and getting cut-off by an idiot.
The industry needs to control its content. Sex and violence sell but please, don't make it a normal thing. What I'm starting to see in friend's lil brothers/sisters is more apathy towards violence than before. This is not good for them in the future. Its not just games, its movies, music, etc. Humans learn by stimulus. When they are exposed to something over and over then they will retain that information and use it implicitly in their subconcious to make a real-world decision. Media needs to control itself before it is forced under control which I doubt it will do voluntarily. Oh well.

For if it wasn't for the ESRB we would have rampant, meaningless, politically-driven censorship that is constantly attacking the industry.
Of course, the developers/publishers need to change and start creating games with less sex and less on degrading violence.
Dean Hunt needs to stop exploiting Google Ranking. Since when are blogs a good source of information? its all biased and geared towards biased views.
